VNEA = POOL = FUN.
Press Release Dated June 10th, 2003 By Brian Elliott VNEA = POOL = FUN. Players Have Time Of Their Lives At The Riv. The 23rd Annual VNEA Int’l Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nearly 3,000 VNEA Pool Players Packed The Rear Parking Pavilion For The 2003 Opening Ceremonies! If you ever wondered what the most impressive Pool Tournament setting in the history of the game looked like, the 23rd Annual VNEA Championships which ran from May 22nd through the 31st, 2003 was the place to see just that. As players entered the first Grand Ballroom of the Riv, you could see an instant smile on their faces and more often than not, their first words were “WOW”, come here, you’ve got to see this! Players travelled to Las Vegas from Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. That’s 10 countries not including 6 Canadian Provinces and 39 United States. When entering the room, the VNEA wants the player to feel like they’ve entered their own pool planet. They are greeted with Dave Pearson’s Speed Pool arena which coincides with Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman’s Artistic Pool setting. A bit farther lies the coveted VNEA Finals Arena where colorful, spandex kites cover 8 prestine tables which await the outcome of some of the tournaments biggest matches. A practice facility fittingly called “Charlies Pool Palace” will shortly catch your eye as well as an abundance of freshly set Valley pool tables (250 in all) comfortably decorated around the rooms floorspace. Pleasant event banners line the open air spaces while gobo’s of colored light embrace the ballroom walls with event locations, sponsor names and artful VNEA logos. Further into the room you find several mini-bar stations as well as a mini-food court to tantalize the players taste buds. A critical part of the main room revolves around the ever-busy VNEA Booth which offers the players as well as Charter Holders and spectators a place to get VNEA questions answered, pick up tournament souvenirs, get team pictures taken or enter raffles galore with all monies going to the incredible VNEA Junior Program. Also located in the VNEA Booth was the very popular “Rack-A-Round” competition which tested the players cue ball control as well as ball-clearing efficiency. Competition was fun and great times were recorded. At the end of the room was the VNEA Control Stage which was ran with impeccable proficiency throughout the entire event. This is just what you saw when you first got to the tournament. There was still another ballroom as well as siderooms, a Vendors Arena (filled with pool paraphernalia to meet every players needs), and countless other side events. From two fun-filled pool parties (swimming pool), to an incredible Opening Ceremonies, to Certified Instructor and Referee Courses, to an elegant President’s Reception, to a show-ending Awards Banquet, the VNEA travelling extravaganza is the greatest “Pool Show” on the planet. Oh Yeah! There was plenty of pool competition as well. From 8-Ball and 9-Ball Singles to Scotch Doubles to Team events, the VNEA kept its players busy playing pool for as long as they wanted every day of the tournament. Also, for the convenience of friends, family and press back home, the results of this tournament were reported, as events unfolded, live on the internet at www.vnea.com. Look What’s In Store For 2004! VNEA Championships Expand To “4” Divisions With The Addition Of The Intermediate Division 1) Regular Division 2) Intermediate Division 3) Masters Division 4) Sports Division • No Masters In The Regular Division • A Fairer Playing Surface For All Participants • Will Debut At The 24th Annual Int’l Championships • Read Your “8-Ball News & Views” For More Details VNEA’s Season-Ending Celebration Offers Players Pool Competition And A Whole Lot More... Participants in the International Championships have all played in an organized VNEA League System over the past year. The VNEA was formed by Amusement Companies around the world to conduct leagues on their tables alone. In this regard, 205 amusement companies were represented at this years event sending either the winners of their leagues or anybody who qualified that wants to be a part of the VNEA experience in Las Vegas. At this 23rd Annual event, the players were offered the following 19 events to display their talents: • • • • • • • • • • 8-Ball Open Team Regular & Masters 8-Ball Women’s Team Regular & Masters Sportsmen’s & Sportswomen’s Team 8-Ball Men’s Singles Regular & Masters 8-Ball Women’s Singles Regular & Masters 9-Ball Men’s Singles Regular & Masters 9-Ball Women’s Singles Regular & Masters 8-Ball Men’s & Women’s Singles Seniors 9-Ball Men’s Singles Seniors Scotch Doubles Regular & Masters Although mini-tournaments began on Thursday, actual competition began on Friday, May 23rd with the beginning of 8-Ball Singles divisions. Eric Durbin of Clarks Vending/Bullseye in Germantown, Ohio, took home a whopping $7,000 and the 8-Ball Men’s Singles Regular Division Championship by beating the young upand-comer Shane VanBoening playing for Rushmore Amusement in Rapid City, South Dakota in the final match. Shane took $5,000 back to South Dakota for his second place finish. In the 8-Ball Women’s Singles Regular Division final, it was Michele Thompson from United Distributors in Wichita, Kansas defeating the tough Lonette Fox from Coin-Op Specialists in Adrian, Michigan. Michele captured $3,500 while Lonette took home $2,000. In the Masters Division, it was the tough Scott Tollefson playing for High Country/TD Rowe in Ft. Collins, CO who pocketed $4,000 and the 8Ball Men’s Singles Masters Championship this year. Wyoming’s own Pete Trujillo from Cheyenne Vending in Cheyenne was awarded $2,500 for his brilliant play. Nine-Ball Singles were held in the mini-tournament format this year and the response was great and the matches were grand resulting in the following outcomes. In the 9-Ball Men’s Open Singles, Faro Palazzolo of Town & Country Amusement in Ontario claimed the title and $1,000 by defeating Dave Reljic from Amarda Holdings Pty. in Australia. Dave took $500 down under for his great play. Las Vegas’ own Toni Tucker from Candyland Amusements defeated Jenni Athens from K.D. Amusement in Ames, Iowa to capture the 9-Ball Women’s Singles Regular title. Toni pocketed $500 while Jenni grabbed $300 for her efforts. After successfully capturing the 8-Ball Men’s Singles Masters title, Colorado’s Scott Tollefson laid claim to the 9-Ball Men’s Masters Singles title as well. Scott beat out Alberta, Canada’s Dave Martin who plays for Champs. Scott added $2,350 to his tournament-take while Dave’s take was $1,350. Tammie Jones from Indiana captured back-to-back titles in the Women’s 9-Ball Masters Singles competition. Tammie eliminated Wisconsin’s Pam Bell from Bullseye, Inc. leaving Pam with second place and a check for $715. Tammie pocketed another $1,250. Congratulations ladies. Completing the Singles events was the SENIORS Division. Here’s how they unfolded! Pocketing $2,000 and the Men’s 8-Ball Seniors Singles title was Jack Bailey from Amusement Supply in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. Jack beat Lupe Rosas from American Amusement in Bay City, Michigan. Lupe won $1,600 for his second place finish. Mary Traylor of Mahboub 7 Vendors in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Kim Anderson of Inglis Coin Machine in Boise, Idaho went head to head in the Women’s side of the 8-Ball Seniors Division. Dago Huber from Jenkins Music in Rock Springs, Wyoming outplayed last years champion Dennis Rhodes from Ontario Skill Games in Canada for the Men’s 9-Ball Singles Seniors title. Dago earned $700 for his play while Dennis added $500 to his pocketbook. The Regular and Masters Scotch Doubles competition also came to a head after five days of intense mini-tournament qualifiers. The pair of Ross Gutterud and L. Jensen from Idaho nailed down first prize and $1,250 in the Scotch Doubles Regular Division. C. Harness and D. Gilmore from Shaffer Services in Ohio fell just short taking second place and a check for $750. It was an All-Alberta Final in the Masters Scotch Doubles competition. Rick Glenn and Bonnie Plowman captured the title and a check for $2,000. Kevin Osborne and Kathie MacDonald placed second. Kevin and Kathie split $1,200 for their efforts. As an added bonus at this years championships, James Peterson from Jumpin’ James Cues, graciously donated personally engraved jump cues to the winners of the Singles and Scotch Doubles events. With the Singles competition concluded, it was time to bring on the teams and what a better way to do so than with the world renown VNEA Team Opening Ceremonies Celebration. Over 3,000 eager pool shooters attended this incredible show which opened with a colorful parade of flags from around the world, and the Singles Awards Presentation to honor their fantastic feats. Once all of the states and countries were acknowledged and the Singles winners were all acquainted with their beautiful Charlie awards, the VNEA had a drawing for a beautiful El Tigre Home Pool Table. The lucky winner was Stu Watt from Valley Pool NZ Ltd. in Pukekohe, New Zealand and was awarded the table by Valley Vice-President of Sales Dave Courington. Also, with forty-five members already in place, the VNEA Amateur Pool Player “Hall of Fame” was ready to induct its next deserving fivesome. Receiving this tremendous honor, along with a beautiful Hall of Fame satin jacket, certificate and limited edition VNEA Hall of Fame trading card set, were the following inductees: • • • • • Denise Belanger - Ontario Skill Games (Ontario) Lorna Duprel - Hills Vending (SD) Donna Grass - G & G Enterprises (Ontario) Kathy Hayes - D & R Star (MN) Rick Tonjum - D & R Star (MN) As in years past, the VNEA asked its players if anyone would like to display their talent at the festive mixer. This years highlights were given by professional pool personality Mike Massey singing his new release “Pool Hall Junkies” from the hit movie of the same name. Also, a zany duo from down under (Australia) performed their rendition of Steve Irwin’s Crocodile Hunter. Fortunately, in this skit, the extremely dangerous, stuffed koala bear didn’t take off anyone’s finger. When the last award was handed out, the show kicked into high gear with a barrage of incredible fireworks which lit up the sky and alerted the city that the VNEA was in town. As the last firework shot into the air, the great sounds of the fabulous band THE ZIPPERS brought the capacity crowd to its feet. The rest of the evening consisted of laughing, dancing and meeting new friends. Coming off a night of incredible entertainment, the Team competition kicked off Tuesday morn- ing right on schedule. Over 700 teams participated in the Team events and the battle to the finals was long and hard-fought. In the 8-Ball Open Team Regular Division, it was Planet Pool from Town & Country Amusement in Windsor, Ontario, Canada taking home the title by defeating Long Lake Has Beens from Gregory Amusements in Battle Creek, Michigan. Planet Pool grabbed the grand prize of $10,000 while Long Lake Has Beens pocketed $8,000. Congratulations to both of these hard playing teams. What an accomplishment. In the Women’s Team Regular final it was H2O Vision Quest from Wal-Mac Amusements in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Got Shape? from High Country/TD Rowe in Ft. Collins, Colorado who battled for the $5,000 first prize. After some great play, H2O Vision Quest captured the title. Got Shape? received $3,000 for their second place finish. Before the finals of the Masters events got kicked off in “The VNEA Dome”, hundreds of spectators gathered for the inaugural playing of the newly introduced “Valley Cup” annual competition. With a coveted, shiny silver chalice and bragging rights for a year up for grabs, 5 randomly selected VNEA Hall of Fame Members would wage pool war against 5 randomly picked VNEA Tournament Referees. Final match-ups were drawn and five 9Ball, race to 2, battles would begin. With competition as exciting as anyone could imagine, it came down to the final ball of the final match to decide the winner. With nerves of steel, Joe Fazio from the Refs team, pocketed the 9-Ball finishing off a competition that will burn in the stomachs of the Hall of Famers for an entire year until they can try to regain “The Cup” in 2004. Valley Cup participants were as follows: The Refs: Joe Fazio, Al Jarvis, Roy Alicea, Rick Goodman and Nils McConnell. The Hall of Famers: Ed Borgia, Shelley Hudson, Dave Everett, Dennis Favero and Blaine MacNeil. The finals of the Masters events were next to take place in The Dome which sported 8 comfortably placed tables with arena seating with over 300 spectators in attendance and an overhead projector displaying an up to date scoresheet for each match. For the second year in a row, it was a battle of Alberta for the 8-Ball Open Team Masters championship title. Wayne’s Grumpy Old Men from WalMac and Good Question from Challenger squared off for the prize. Wayne’s Grumpy Old Men walked away with the title and a check for $8,500. Second place finisher’s, Good Question, earned $5,000 for their successful play. It was also an all-Alberta match up in the 8-Ball Women’s Team Masters event. Again, it was the Ashton twins and Back For More from Challenger Vending 2000 defeating Q-Club Pure Instinct from Wal-Mac Amusements. The champions pocketed $4,500 while second place received $2,600. With the addition of the third team division, teams are virtually guaranteed the possibility of playing at least 4 and possibly 6 team matches. This division has been a huge success. Australia #2 from Amarda Holdings Pty. in Australia took home first prize of $1,000 in the Sportsmen’s Division with a win over Sidepockets from United Distributors in Wichita, Kansas who took home a respectable second place check for $800. Two more Alberta teams, both from Wal-Mac Amusements, also made it to the finals of the Sportswomen’s Division. It was Snifters Stirred Not Shaken who defeated Rosario’s Bustin’ Loose in this great match. Snifters captured $500 while Rosario’s settled for $350. The “Hardluck Competition” also had some great play for teams that were unfortunately knocked out in the early rounds of the Tournament. First place winners of beautiful angular awards were as follows: Open Teams Charter Holder St./Prov. Master C.D. Amusement Cote Quebec The Fat Boys Top Music AL The Rack Pack Southern Music B.C. Two playful parties featuring “Party Music” and everything from a watermelon eatin’ contest to a bikini contest were offered. There was even a temporary tattoo artist available to decorate your body and an incredible magician walking around to amaze the crowd. Everyone in attendance had a ball, and a load of prizes were given away to the winners of the numerous contests and games. Charter Holders and special dignitaries were invited to the annual President’s Reception earlier in the week in honor of VNEA President Tom Elum of Elum Music in Massillon, Ohio. Lifetime Sanction Cards were presented to four VNEA long time contributors. The cards exemplify a lifetime of commitment to the VNEA and were issued to Tom & Marty Rossman (Dr. Cue Promotions), Viking Cue (accepted by Dennis Coulter) and President Elum. Reception guests were treated to the talents of an incredible “slight of hand” magician who travelled from table to table with his awesome acts. Also highlighted at the reception was the presentation of the 2003 Warren Kelley Meritorious Service Award. In memory of Warren Kelley, a great believer in the VNEA, this is the highest award given by the VNEA. Presenting the award were VNEA Executive Director Gregg Elliott and longtime friend Mike Fowler from W-K Music & Vending. Accepting the award at this years ceremony was Jerry Dunbar from Columbus, Ohio. Congratulations Jerry. Your enormous commitment to our Association over the years is greatly appreciated. The President’s Choice Award, presented by current VNEA President Tom Elum, was awarded to Dave Courington of Valley for his dedication to the VNEA and his continuous efforts to make our association the strongest of its kind in the world. Congratulations Dave for your many contributions. Another unique feature of the VNEA Championships was the Team Uniform Award. This award was named the “Red Jones” Team Uniform Award in 1997 after Mr. Pool, Red Jones, passed away. Red was always known for his classy wardrobe around the tournament room and it was an honor to keep his name alive by permanently affixing it to this award. Many teams, from all over the world, concentrated hard on having a unique tournament look. Several interesting and one of a kind fashions were unveiled. The women’s competition was topped by Viking Vixens of Challenger Vending 2000 in Alberta whose members included Tracey Charest, Gen Gingras, Pat Coninx, Bobbi Gill and Tara Weiss. On the men’s side, Wild 8 of Aactive Coin in Manitoba captured first prize. Team members included Kevin Lansard, Patrick Bonneteau, Dan Pelland, Anders Prokopowich, Ken Bernstein and John Harrison. Beautiful V-neck sweatshirts were awarded to the members of these festive teams. Professional Pool Instructor Mr. Jerry Briesath was on hand throughout the week to give instruction and answer questions. Briesath, taking his Pool School on the road, is always a crowd favorite as he teaches his techniques in a very intimate setting which makes him very understandable and in tune with the players. Jerry’s room was filled to capacity throughout the tournament week. With his venue just feet from the ballrooms entrance, Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossman brought his Artistic Pool show to the forefront. The Doctors fast-paced, energy filled shows always draws tremendous crowds as he grips you with his highly skilled pool artistry and witty lingo. Again this year, Dr. Cue held his Artistic Shot Making competition culminating in the 8th Annual World Artistic Pool Championship. The first challenge Dr. Cue held attracted a record 109 contestants with cash and a unique Artistic Pool trophy up for grabs. Mike Stuart from Edmonton, Alberta captured first place, $230 and an acrylic award in this first event while Jason Duff from Calgary, Alberta captured second place which paid $160 plus a trophy. Robert Rodriguez from Denver, Colorado beat out 88 other participants in the second Artistic Pool event pocketing himself $175 along with a beautiful trophy. Stan Tourangeau from Vancouver, British Columbia, proudly finished in second place pocketing $125 and a trophy. The third event was to decide the World Artistic Pool Champion. With 3 countries ready to do battle in the finals, competition got underway. With some great scores being recorded, and over 100 spectators, everyone anxiously awaited the outcome. In the end it was a battle between Canada and the U.S. with the Canadian Jason Duff from Calgary, Alberta capturing the title and beautiful Artistic Pool award. Mark Dimick, from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, finished second. Also, $520 was collected throughout the event to be given to the growing VNEA Junior Program. Sharing the spotlight with Dr. Cue was one of the VNEA’s greatest attractions... Dave “The Ginger Wizard” Pearson. Dave ran several Speed Pool events with daily winners receiving beautiful cues. He also collected an incredible amount of money for the VNEA Junior Program. The VNEA is fortunate to have Dave as a partner in pool. As an added treat, Dave decided that on Thursday, May 29th at 6:00pm, he would attempt to set a new world record for clearing 10 tables of 15 balls in less than 8 minutes, 57.1 seconds. With hundreds of well-wishers in attendance, Dave wound the crowd into a frenzy with his attempt at pool history. With 8:48.1 showing on the Speed Clock, Dave sunk ball #150 setting a new World Record and astonishing the crowd with his endurance and extreme ball-clearing ability. With local and national news media in attendance, Dave thanked the audience for their support and praised VNEA for all they do for amateur pool. Congratulations, Dave, on this enormous accomplishment. The VNEA Booth welcomed the addition of the “Rack-A-Round Competition” (conducted by Sandy Chamberlain and Mr. Keith from R & M Music in Oklahoma). The men and women of the VNEA had their ball control skills tested daily with this unique and exciting side event. Daily winners received cash for their efforts. This competition was tons of fun and enjoyed by all participants. Another very worthwhile event took place during the 23rd Annual event - The VNEA “Cues For Kids” Program. Many gracious companies donated cues, cases, clothing, etc. to be raffled off during the tournament with the proceeds going directly to the growing VNEA Junior Program. Thank you very much to the following companies that donated merchandise: Jumpin’ James Palmer Cues Viking Cues J & J America Discount Custom Leather Cuesight Technologies McDermott Cues Tiger Products Connoisseur of Custom Cues Clawson Cues Cue & Case Sales Inside Pool Cue Guard On-Site Stress Relief The Pro Shop Valley Guido Orlandi Custom Cues With the Team competition concluding in the early afternoon hours of May 31st, it was time to start preparing for the much anticipated 23rd Annual VNEA Awards Banquet and Entertainment Extravaganza. When the doors opened at 5:45 that afternoon, the players were treated to their pick of over a dozen beverage stations, the great sounds of The Blues Brothers Tribute Band and an incredible buffet style dinner that made your mouth water. The band rocked the house throughout the hour long cocktail party and then hung around to greet the players and have their pictures taken with them. Also in the crowd was a balloon artist as well as a photographer who captured special moments at each table and instantly framed the photos in a beautiful 23rd Annual Banquet paper frame. Acknowledged at the ceremonies was the remarkable manufacturer/supplier members that help support the growth of the VNEA International Championships by displaying their products during the tournament. They included: Clawson Cues, Connoisseur of Custom Cues, Cue Guard, Cue & Case Sales, CueSight Technologies, Discount Custom Leather, Guido Orlandi Custom Cues, Inside Pool Magazine, J & J America, Jumpin’ James, McDermott Cues, OnSite Stress Relief, Palmer Cues, The Pro Shop, Tiger Products and Viking Cues. As if the banquet wasn’t already a huge success and full of entertainment, the evening’s headliner was ready to make his VNEA debut appearance. World renown comedian and T.V. personality Christopher Titus (from the hit television show “Titus”) let the comedy rip as he took the stage and began his unique style of stand-up that sent ripples of laughter through the capacity crowd. A full hour and a half of the tremendously talented Titus climaxed the evening and left the pool party in hysterics. What a show! What an accomplishment! When you consider an Association with nearly 100,000 players, 6,000 of whom attend the VNEA International Championships, it’s impressive to think that just a handful of these skilled shooters can call themselves VNEA All-Stars. Based on a point system awarding excellence throughout the week of the tournament, All-Star Teams are selected to represent the cream of the crop at the tournament. The following teams were selected for 2003. Gentlemen’s All-Stars 1st Team 2nd Team Eric Durbin Kevin Osborn Scott Tollefson Pete Trujillo Shane VanBoening Ty Wilson Scott McLeod Javier Monoz Larry Nevel Gabe Owens Ike Runnels Stan Tourangeau Ladies All-Stars 1st Team 2nd Team Joanne Ashton Jana Montour Bonnie Plowman Tasha Thomas Bev Ashton Lonette Fox Mona Remedios Michele Thompson Honorable Mention Gentlemen’s Ladies Robert Rodriguez Pascal Villeneuve Lisa Brodie Doreen Cardinal Charity Laboucan AMATEUR POOL PLAYER HALL OF FAME The heart-pounding excitement of the Opening Ceremonies at the 23rd Annual VNEA International Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada was the perfect setting for the induction of the newest members of the VNEA Hall of Fame. With players gathered from all over the world and all of VNEA’s dignitaries in attendance, the stage was set for the introduction of the 2003 VNEA Amateur Pool Player Hall of Fame inductees. Receiving this prestigious honor, along with an exclusive Hall of Fame Satin Jacket, Certificate and limited edition VNEA Hall of Fame Trading Card Set, were the following players: • • • • • Denise Belanger - Ontario Skill Games (Ontario) Lorna Duprel - Hills Vending (SD) Donna Grass - G & G Enterprises (Ontario) Kathy Hayes - D & R Star (MN) Rick Tonjum - D & R Star (MN) At the conclusion of the induction ceremonies, the new Hall of Fame members cordially mingled with admirers and signed autographs for those seeking keepsakes. The “2003 Class” brings the VNEA Hall of Fame Membership to 50 players. Our congratulations to these very special players. Lifetime Members At the Annual President’s Reception, held at the scenic Top of the Riv, during the 23rd Annual VNEA International Championships, a very honorable presentation took place for four very special long time VNEA family members. These four people have performed their duties and carried themselves in such an honorable fashion throughout the years that the title Lifetime Members seems to be a perfect match. For their remarkable efforts, Viking Cue (presented to Dennis Coulter), Dr. Cue & Ms. Cue (Tom & Marty Rossman), and Tom Elum (Elum Music) were awarded beautiful hardwood encased, etched brass Lifetime Sanction Cards. Exemplifying ingenuity, longevity, adaptability, creativity and many other attributes, these remarkable people have earned their standing as VNEA Lifetime Members. Congratulations! m e h l i M Chuck Golden8Award 2003 RECIPIENTS • The first year Charter Holder sanctioning the highest number of players their first official season. • Midstate Amusement Games (WI) - 152 • Superior Music & Games (FL) - 131 • T.H.
