The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Wyoming Association of Student Councils has adopted the Make-A-Wish Wyoming as its State Charity. Last year, Wyoming student council members raised over $200,000 to help grant wishes for Wyoming Wish Kids. Cheyenne Schools would like to be part of this strong tradition. You can share this passion by providing support to the Make-A-Wish Tour de Wish event to be held on May 9. Make-A-Wish Wyoming is celebrating its 30th year of granting wishes. In 1985, 10 year old Brian wished for a BMX bike. In honor of his wish, we are hosting a 5 K bike ride in Cheyenne called Tour de Wish. Since 1985, Make-A-Wish Wyoming has granted nearly 500 wishes. Make-A-Wish Wyoming holds a special place in South High School’s Student Body President’s heart. Austin was granted a wish in 2009. Below is a letter from Austin about his experiences from Make-A-Wish. In 2008 I was 10 years old and just beginning the 5th grade when I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoma Leukemia. I did not understand what that was, but the doctors explained it was cancer in the blood. The doctors gave me a 75% chance of surviving after three years of chemotherapy. In the summer of 2009 Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted my mom and explained that because I had a life threatening disease they would provide one wish for me. It could be anything in the world that I wanted, from electronics to meeting someone famous or taking a vacation. The wish could be something just for me or I could choose to include my family in the wish. I chose to take a trip to Disney World with my family. We went over Christmas vacation. I know that Central High School, and a radio station in Cheyenne helped to raise money for my trip. The trip included airfare to and from Florida, a vehicle for us to get around in for three days at Disney World, two days at Universal Studios, and a day at Sea World. It also gave us meal tickets and we stayed at a place called Give Kids the World. It is a resort just for ill kids and their families. We stayed in a bungalow. They had two pools, an ice cream shop, horses, train rides, movies and games at night, and a dining area. All of this was free to us. Disney provided me with a golden ticket which got us to the front of the line for everything. This allowed us to ride and see all of the characters in a short amount time. They accommodated me with a wheelchair because I did not have the energy to walk around all day and a place at Disney to rest if I got too tired. This was the most amazing trip for my family and one we could never duplicate. Make-A-Wish makes sick kids feel happy and healthy even if it’s just for a short amount of time during a scary time in our lives. I will be forever grateful for the memories Make-A-Wish gave me.
