Make-A-Wish Edition
AMA Charter # 556 Founded 1957 PLANE TALK Volume 20 Issue 9 September 2009 Lancaster County Radio Control Club, Inc. www.lcrcc.us Make-A-Wish Edition This is the picture that appeared in the Penney Saver, or at least one my wife took. From left to right, Phillip Adams, Robin Church, Craig Peck, Robin Renzetti, Henry Adams, Hrayr Avakian, Jim Wiker, Walter Berko, Nick Upton, Victor Hugo, Jim Snyder, and Jeff Troy. A motley crew if I’ve ever seen one. Meeting Notice When: Thursday September 4th at 7pm. Where: LCRCC flying field - RAIN OR SHINE Agenda: Business meeting, election of Officers Picture right, Hrayr and Phillip attempt to show Ann Ash how to fly a plane Jeff Troy brought out. For those of you that don’t think women should be flying, this wasn’t a problem. She finally handed the plane off when she had enough. It was interesting while it lasted. Page 1 Club Calendar Unless otherwise specified all meetings will be held at the field Thursday September 4th, 7pm - Rain or Shine Meeting in the clubhouse Sunday September 14th, 1pm - Rain or Shine Corn Roast, ‘bring a dish to pass’ Sunday September 21st Build & Fly? — To be discussed at the meeting on the 4th. Thanks to all that came out and braved the heat, yes it was a scorcher. Although the event was well attended, people didn’t stay long, probably due to the heat. But, all in all, everyone had a great time. Ken Allen Slotnick, who DJ’d for WLAN in the 60’s and 70”s was our M/C. Gee, I remembered him when I was young, eons ago! FOX 43 came out to do an article on the event. They even got to film Paul Quinn, the president and general manager of channel 8 doing a touch and go for the crowd. Roy Bender gives some would-be flyers a chance at flying. I’m sure some of those that flew will be at the meeting in September to see what they need to do to learn to fly. Page 2 Minutes from meeting 8/6/09 Meeting called to order at 7:04 Minutes were approved as posted New members: None. Jake Reed visited, his father is a pilot for Southwest Airlines, and is currently serving in the military. Treasurer report: Funds up. Central Penn: Nothing, their meeting is in September. Events: Make-A-Wish: Working on getting Channel 8 out, Penney Saver to come out next week for the article. Bullseye will be the food vendor, French Fries, funnel cake, and Italian ice. Ken Allen Slotnick, a radio announcer from the 60’s and 70’s (WLAN radio), will do MC the event. Hrayr to get name tags, so the public will know who we are. Community Days: Vic Hugo is the point man for this event. We can bring planes in between 8-8:30 Saturday and Sunday morning, but we won’t be able to park at the lot close to our display. We will have to unload, and park at another location. Some suggestions were to have someone there to help unload or share the parking pass. Jim Wiker to send out an email asking for volunteers to man the displays. Field Marshall: Field is getting green again. Thanks to the road gang for their help with spreading out the stones. Watch for the sinkhole on the North side of the runway, close to where the grass is dumped. This area will be marked to keep someone from accidentally falling in. Safety Officer: Be careful when using the safety benches. Rick cautioned about landing in the pit area. Fence needs to be put back up at the entrance to the pit area, to discourage visitors from walking into this area. Newsletter: Ok. Website: Ok, Craig still looking for someone to take this over. Old business: Bylaw revisions were put on hold until the next meeting because of some further changes and additions to the bylaws. It was thought, that instead of voting on the revisions that were listed in the previous minutes, and voting for other changes next month, that we’d wait and vote for all the changes at once. Those changes and additions were emailed out to avoid taking up so much room in the newsletter New business: Picnic tables need replaced, a board fell off one of the picnic tables during the open house/picnic. Even though the tops can be replaced, the rest of the tables are still in bad shape. Membership voted to replace the tables with new 8’ tables. New tables will be bought before Make-A-Wish. New logo’s were presented to the membership. Page 3 Nominations for officers were: Peter Caddick – President Victor Hugo – Vice President Craig Peck – Vice President Walter Breko – Treasurer Jim Wiker – Secretary Bob Heine was recognized for his hard work as treasurer for the past years. Great job Bob, and thanks! 50/50 none Respectfully submitted, Jim Wiker Then there was Steve Lapp, the skydiver from a parachuting club in Maytown. He claimed to have jumped over 6,000 times. It doesn’t make any sense why someone would jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Then there was the wild maneuvers of the Cessna 182 that followed him down! Many thanks to all that participated! Special thanks to Ken Allen Slotnick for donating his time, to Hidden Hangar for their donations for the silent auction. Thanks to Ann Mead Ash for her article in the Penney Saver. To Steve Lapp from the Maytown Sport Parachute Club for the demonstration for the crowd, and the pilot of the Cessna, that we thought was going to crash. Thank you to the club for stepping up and doing your part to ensure this years Make-A-Wish went off without a hitch. You persevered through a very hot day to make this event enjoyable for a lot of people. If you think it was in vain, then read the two letters on the next page. Page 4 She is why we do what we do. Her name is Sarah, and she came out to the field to watch. She said she went to Disney World because of Make-A-Wish. My wife even tried her hand at flying, which didn’t go well. We received two letters that the members should see. From: Steve McFarland <[email protected]> Date: August 27, 2009 8:24:06 AM EDT To: <[email protected]> Subject: Make a Wish Reply-To: <[email protected]> I wanted to write about your Make a Wish Fly in. My son Alex and I attended and we both had a great time. We both had a chance to fly on a buddy box with Rick, and we really enjoyed it. Thanks to Rick for allowing us to enjoy his airplane and great instruction. The flyovers and skydiver were fun to watch. Thanks for putting on such a fun show for a good cause. I look forward to coming back again. Steve McFarland Craig, Thank you for sending the pictures, they are terrific and helped me prove to my doubting Thomas Smoketown friends that I did a touch and go at the model airplane field :o) You should be proud of organizing such a worthwhile event. I'm sure the Make a Wish folks appreciated your efforts. Glad I could be a part of the event, thanks again for the invitation. Onward and upward Paul Quinn WGAL President/ General Manager 717-735-7201 Office 717-572-8818 Cell [email protected] This was our only mishap. The gear in the elevator servo stripped and the Hots went into the corn field. By the way, if anyone would like a slightly used plane, it’s available, free. I’ll give you the plans so you can re-construct it. No engine or electronics, but you can have the rest (plus the bad servo). Email or call me [email protected] (682-7175) Happy flying, Jim Page 5
