Landyachting is a sport in which a 3-wheeled yacht with a sail is propelled by the wind. It can be compared with sailing,
but on land and faster, much faster. The yachts can move three times as fast as the wind propelling them, sometimes
reaching speeds up to 100 km/h.
Along with that, the yachts ride on the hard-packed sand, on a beach that is never flat, with tires that do not have any
profile, which results in a fast and dynamic sport. Still, there is no motor, so on board, there is silence. The only thing
you hear is the wind whistling in the sail and the tires scrunching on the sand
The sport can be associated with the following concepts



Technique: to reduce weight, bigger yachts are built with
carbon fibre. Similar to what happens with windmills and
formula 1 cars, light materials and optimal aerodynamics can
provide better results
Ecology: Landyachting can be viewed as a motor sport, using
the wind as fuel. It can easily be related to an ecological
story.
Water sport: Landyachting is the only water sport that is
practiced on land. Still, it leaves you entirely drenched.
Landyachting pilots, therefore, need the knowhow of a sailer
and the agility of a rafter.
The origins of the sport lie in Belgium. Today, people landsail all
around the world, and the pastime is particularly popular in France,
with thousands of enthusiasts. In Germany, the class “Kitebuggy” is
very popular, counting a few thousand athletes. In Belgium, the clubs
residing in De Panne are going strong, with over 500 active members.
The belgian pilots were present at the WC in 2014 (Smith Creek,
Nevada), and came home with thirteen medals. Outside of Europe,
the sport is well represented in the USA, Australia, Argentina and Chili.
The EC is being held from the 18th until the 25th of september 2015 and will assemble over 350 pilots from 10
European countries. The championship will take place on the beaches of De Panne and Oostduinkerke

We expect some 350 pilots (50 Belgians). The pilots will be selected
on the basis of the results they attained during their respective
national competitions. Participants are expected from Belgium,
France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, The Netherlands, Sweden,
Denmark and Spain.










The championship will normally be held over the course of
seven days with a maximum of ten races (and a minimum of
three) per class, depending on weather conditions
The circuit (at low tide) on the beach is six km long. Every race takes 25 up to 45 minutes. Depending on the
weather, 50 to 100 km a day will be covered. Per day and class, a maximum of two races will be held, assuring
a continuous racing programme of four to five hours a day
The races will be held per class (2, 3, S, 5, 5P, Kitebuggy, Miniyacht) with a maximum of ten participants per
country
circuit on the beach (in front of the beachfront properties or the dunes depending on the wind)
caravans and competition vehicles
racing, starting, waiting and parking zone
landyachting center with clubhouse and all necessary facilities
central racing pavilion or tent with logistic facilities (cafeteria, briefing room, festivities at night)

The participants are between 16 and 55 years of age. Most of them are between 25 and 45 years old.
The spectators are people from the region and people who have a second home at the seaside on the one
hand, and people who come to De Panne and Oostduinkerke especially for this event, to watch the show, on
the other hand. Apart from that, a lot of young families and young retirees like to come and watch.


The number of spectators can (depending on weather conditions) climb up to 10 000 persons during the weekend, on
the circuit as well as in the apartment buildings on the beachfront
