A host of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering, dancing in the breeze.

Police Check Update
We would like to remind school volunteers and
parents who plan to assist in the school,
including school trips this spring to make sure
your police check is up-to-date for the current
school year. If you have had a police check
done in a previous school year, it is necessary
to complete an Offence Declaration for this
school year, 2014/2015. If you have not
already done so this year, please stop by the
office. Completing the offence declaration
annually keeps Police Checks current,
preventing an interruption in service which
would result in having to start over and submit
a new Police Check.
EQAO Dates Set
EQAO Primary and Junior
Assessments of Reading,
Writing, and Mathematics will
begin the last week of May and
conclude the first week of June.
Results from EQAO provide a valuable
indication of a child’s strengths and areas for
improvement, and help us to plan next steps as
a school. Parent information about EQAO, can
be found at this link:

Keeping Dry
It’s that time of the year
again…our yard is
becoming slushy, wet and
muddy! In spite of staff
efforts to keep kids out of
puddles and
muck in the yard, many find it hard to resist the
temptation to splash around and get soaked!
Please ensure that your child arrives at school
dressed for wet outdoor activities and accidents.
Weather-appropriate clothing includes boots,
jackets, splash pants, and hats. Packing an extra
set of dry socks, pants and underwear in the
backpack also prevents a child from spending a
part of the day feeling damp and uncomfortable. It
also helps avoid a trip to school during the day to
drop off a dry set of clothes.
Last Chance to Check Lost and Found
It’s time to spring clean the Lost and Found, located
in our office. There is an abundance of winter hats,
mittens, and gloves, as well as sweatshirts, tops,
and even shoes. Items will be
placed in the hallway next week.
Any items that are not picked up
after April 14th will be donated to
local charities.
Family Math Night
Get ready for an evening of hands-on family fun
doing MATH! On Thursday, May 7th, from 6:00 to
7:30 pm, ASES staff and students are hosting this
event, and all families are encouraged to attend.
Students from each class will teach families games
and activities that can be played at home to support
our young mathematicians.
We will also give each family a free take-home
package of resources and manipulatives! Mark
your calendars and plan to attend! It promises to
be mathemagical!

News from the Library
Spring Fashion Finds at Wise Archie
Help Needed!
We would be most grateful if families could check
at home (back of closets, under the bed, etc.) for
overdue library books. We are missing a good
number of items, and having these returned means
we do not have to replace the items, but can
acquire additional titles that we do not already
have.
Book Fair a Success
Under the supervision of Mrs. Coneybeare and Mr.
Hicks, a group of dedicated student volunteers
from grades 6 to 8 have been getting ready for
spring at our gently used children’s clothing shop!
Wise Archie’s racks are filling up with spring tops,
hoodies, sweater, jackets and bottoms, including
jeans and shorts, in a range of sizes for kids of all
ages. Thanks to Jocelyn Babineau, Emma Crowe,
Caitlyn Farrow, Jessica Hannah, Jessica Lee,
Dakota Mahler, Jordanna Mavor, Denni Rivard,
Siddhi Shah, and Brooklyn Spence, who open and
run the store, keeping our inventory and displays
neat and organized.
We would like to thanks ASES families for your
support of our recent Book Fair. We would also like
to recognize a group of students, community
volunteers, and staff members who volunteered
their own time to assist at the event, which was
very well attended. We are excited to be able to
use the proceeds from the fair to add many new
books and resources to our library that will be
enjoyed by our children for some time!
The store is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, during first recess (10:55 to 11:15). We
encourage you to save your loonies and toonies
and come find great fashion and bargains at Wise
Archie!
Student Leaders Learn Power of Play
Kids of Character are Honest!
Right to Play is an organization of
volunteers and partners who work
worldwide to incorporate play,
games, and sport to educate and
empower children and youth. Ten
ASES students were selected to be
Student Ambassadors and
participate in the Right to
Play Junior Leader Academy that
was hosted at Archie Stouffer on March 26th.
Our Kids of Character for last month were
recognized for their honesty. According to their
teachers, they show this trait by telling the truth
about problems they may have or mistakes they
may have made, which also makes them
trustworthy. These students consistently try to do
what is right “even if they think no one is watching”.
Congratulations to the following Kids of Character:
Landon Hurl - KB, Erik Bird - 1A, Grace Allder - 1B,
Dominick Hilts-Dewey - 1/2, Savanna Teasdel - 2A,
Jamie Crowe - 2/3, Baylie Stover - 3A, Rory
Campbell – 3/4, Stephanie Spisak - 4/5, Brooklyn
Spence - 6A, Quinten Little - 6B, Gerry Sutcliffe PA&LS, Kathryn Christian - iA Samantha
Steffensen - iB, and Liam McAlister - iC.
Over 100 students from various TLDSB schools
attended this event and experienced the power of
play and how to facilitate group games with a
purpose. These students will now focus their
attention on preparing for the Canada wide event
“Today We Play” on June 11th which will involve all
students in our school. Our Junior Leaders are:
Brady Baldry, Matea Cameron, Colin Crowe, Trista
Greer, Krystin Hope, Alex Little, Teo O’Malley,
Ruthie Parker, Nigel Smith and Brooklyn Spence.

Students to Attend ‘Earth Summit’
April 22nd is Earth Day and Brady Baldry, Sydney
Christian, Zach Finnie, Devyn Garbutt, and Olivia
Johnson will travel to Camp Wanakita for “Earth
Summit 2015”. This day-long conference is for
students from grades 4 to 8 who are passionate
about saving our planet. The event promotes and
encourages awareness of positive environmental
action. The students’ participation in interactive
workshops at the Summit will help them gain
valuable knowledge and they will be able to use
this experience to enhance Green Action at Archie
Stouffer in the coming years.

ASES Hockey Team Defeats OPP
It’s Game Time for Wildcats Basketball
ASES students and staff, along with some parents
and community members, enjoyed some great
entertainment on March 12th, with an afternoon of
hockey at the Community Centre. The annual
Grade 8 vs. the Haliburton Highlands O.P.P.
detachment was fast-paced and fun! While the
teams took turns taking the lead in scoring, the
Grade 8s earned a win, with a score of 7 to 5.
Mrs. Little and Ms. Salvatori report a great turnout
for Primary basketball this season. 30 boys and

Dauphinee helped with the organization for the
OPP team. Mrs. Little and Mrs. Bird also assisted
our team from the bench. Thanks also to Joel

There are some great recent photos of our students
engaged in classroom and extra-curricular
activities. Two of our classes haveTwitter accounts
as well. IB and IC staff and their students have
new Twitter accounts. @IB_ArchieS is a studentrun account with updates on what is going on inMs.
Smith/Mrs. Kernohan’s 7/8 class, while

They are sending tweets to inform about school
happenings, community events, and other relevant
posts.
On April 9th, the Junior-Mixed basketball team will
travel to Bobcaygeon P.S. to participate in the Zone
tournament. Over the last month, more than thirty
students came out to practices and showed a great
commitment to sport and sportsmanship. It has
been encouraging to see so many students in
grade 5 and 6 demonstrating an interest in
basketball and it is hoped that they will continue to
participate in coming years. Due to imposed
limitations, it was with great difficulty that just 14
students were selected to attend the tournament to
represent Archie Stouffer. They will be named in
the May newsletter.
The Senior Boys team members are Denver Allore,
Jaxson Campbell, Kyle Davis, Nik Dollo, Austin
French, Jackson Gartshore Owen Gilbert, Ryan
Hall, Liam Little, Carson Sisson, Tevin Sullivan, and
Shawn Walker. The team has an exhibition game
April 1st at J.D. Hodgson, and they travel to Langton
P.S. in Fenelon Falls for their Zone tournament
April 9th.
Hailey Anderson, Hailey Bull, Matea Cameron,
Destiny Cooper, McKayla French, Krystin Hope,
Grace Kim, Jessica Hannah, Cassidy Mahler,
Hannah Packard, Denni Rivard, Jill Pearce,
Mackenzie Mulock, Samantha Steffensen, Hannah
Taylor, and Karley Wilson make up our Senior Girls
team. They will host the tournament here at ASES.
Good Luck to all teams!
New Resource for Parents
A new book on financial literacy is available for sign
out from the office called Money and Youth. The
purpose of this resource is to help us teach our
children to make informed decision about their
earning, spending and saving.
