Increasing confidence in using the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process for large diameter /thick wall pipelines is achieved in project RP6.1-05. The state of the art
knowledge collated in this project feeds directly into update process for AS2885. The use of high strength steels is addressed in the project RP1-03 ‘High Strength
Pipes/Pipelines’ which involves a review of available knowledge

mitigations, thus allowing the low risk adoption of this technology for future energy pipelines. Research in this area also includes the investigation of the effect of the
titanium nitrogen ratio on the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) toughness (RP6.1-01), which leads to recommendations in regards to optimum linepipe steel composition. This
will inform the last project in the area of linepipe properties, ie. RP6.1-02, which will result in an Australian industry specification for linepipe that will help Australian
organisation purchase overseas linepipe with confidence and to help overseas suppliers understand the requirements of the Australian industry.
