Training School: Vector-borne diseases and One
Training School: Vector-borne diseases and One Health (WG1)
Romania, 6-20 July 2015
GOAL AND GENERAL OVERVIEW
MAIN ORGANIZERS
The theoretical lectures (2 days) will be held in the
Facilities of the University of Agricultural Sciences
and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca.
David Modrý, UVPS Brno
Andrei D. Mihalca, USAMV Cluj-Napoca
Lectures will be followed by a series of practical
lessons organized within a field trip to a satellite
laboratory, in Chilia Veche, Danube Delta Biosphere
Reserve. The diversity of agricultural practices and
livestock, together with unique and ecologically
complex habitats and rural human population
represent a exceptional environment in which the
One Health paradigm can be practically presented in
its broadest meaning, including not only the
pathogen transmission between domestic animals
and men, but also the importance of wildlife in
zoonotic cycles of selected model pathogens.
General program will include: sampling and
surveillance protocol design, sampling animals,
people and environment, laboratory analyses,
theoretical approach to data interpretation and
application. Such a complex approach is necessary to
understand the complex nature of zoonotic vectorborne pathogens and their ecological context. Within
European territory, one can hardly imagine more
suitable environment. Especially for students from
Western Europe, practical work in one of the most
valuable parts of remaining European “wilderness”
represents a unique chance to understand also the
differences in ecological and socio-economic
conditions within the expanding territory of EU. The
general principles of One Health approach will be
exemplified in lectures and practical sessions in field
and laboratory using three zoonotic pathogens:
Dirofilaria spp. and West Nile Fever virus and their
vectors, +Toxoplasma gondii. Maximum attention will
be paid to syntheses of obtained data and
presentation of the overall aspects underlying the
transmission of diseases on human-domestic animalwildlife
interface.
