Parents are invited to come and see what their children have accomplished. If you can, please come on July 10 and July 24 to appreciate the work of the campers. A newsletter and a schedule of events will be emailed to parents shortly before the end of each two-week period. Explorations 2015 Explorations 2015 3 shooting stars, solar flares and so much more!!! So put on your astronaut suit, buckle up and enjoy the ride!!! Junior Program for campers entering Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 3 Junior campers are in self-contained groups which stay together supervised for the whole day. Robyn’s Group is composed of kindergarten campers participating for 4 weeks. Fairy Tales and Superheroes! A look into Fairy Tales, Princesses and Super Heroes. The children will be exploring a variety of Fairy Tales through skits, art work, math and songs. After, the children will be looking at different Super Heroes and will be exploring them by developing skits, making up songs, looking at different skills that would be used by Super Heroes and using art work to display what they discovered. Tara’s Group is composed grade 1 campers participating for 4 weeks. Exploring Space and Beyond Come and spend a month exploring space and all of its exciting planets and possibilities!!! We will read and learn about space, make planet mobiles, build rockets, create our very own space adventures and discover interesting facts about the milky way, black holes and comets!!! We will also go star gazing, make our very own telescopes to discover Explorations 2015 — Junior Program Tracey’s Group is composed of kindergarten and grade 1 campers participating for 2 weeks. Artists around the world Come and explore a very special program designed to sow seeds of creativity and love of art at an early age. Children work around a carefully designed range of 2d and 3d art activities. They also participate in interactive and cultural arts. Through books, fun, games and hands on experiences we will learn about the greatest artists in history: Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, Kandinsky and Picasso, to name just a few. Be prepared for a spectacular art vernissage. What are we waiting for, let’s begin our adventure! Selina’s Group is composed of grade 2 campers participating for 4 weeks. Children’s Rights are Rocking! Grab your backpack, wave goodbye and get ready for the adventure of your life. This summer we will discover Children’s Rights through fun games, storytelling, fantastic food, awesome celebrations, colorful art and music. We will be using “Play it Fair!” (developed by Equitas) a toolkit that stems from the human rights that are defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. By promoting these values the campers will discover issues that children face on different continents. We will learn how lucky we are to live in Canada. Campers Explorations 2015 — Junior Program 4 will develop practical skills to deal with discrimination and be able to share what they have learned with their family and friends. Adventures await us; hope you are ready for a fantastic summer! Jessica’s Group is composed of grades 2 and 3 campers participating for 2 weeks. Environments Everywhere! We are surrounded by and included in all kinds of cool environments; why not explore all of them??? We’ll dive into aquatic environments, dig into underground environments, inspect animal environments, have a look at urban environments and rural, countryside environments and don’t forget your sunglasses while we explore tropical environments!! Not only will we investigate these places and more, we will also find the most healthy environments and learn how we can help those that are not so healthy! Let’s make the best of our outdoor environment and learn how to read a map and use a compass for a Great Outdoor Treasure Hunt! Let’s learn how to put up a tent in our environment and have a mini camp-out, complete with songs, stories, games and marshmallows too!! You’ll never forget this amazing adventure through environments everywhere!!! Anastasia’s Group is composed of grade 3 campers participating for 4 weeks. Around the World in 20 Days Get ready to go on a trip around the world! See the colours, taste the flavours, hear the music, and meet the people. Live the art. Listen to the stories. Love the adventure. We will be creating, cooking, Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program and exploring various cultural communities in our city. From Chinese dragons and Panamanian molas to Indian shadow puppets and Inuit soapstone sculptures — we will be making ethnic art, cooking ethnic foods, experiencing ethnic folklore (through drama and storytelling) and exploring ethnic neighbourhoods. This is an opportunity to experience the richness and wonder of the people who are your neighbours. What are you waiting for? Start packing! Ss Ss Ss Ss Ss The Junior groups will have music, science and physical education on a daily basis: Junior Music Program is led by Kathleen Walshe-Turcotte and Brenda Fahey-DeJean This year, the children will explore the rainforest habitat in the first session. Through the musical Singin’ in the Rainforest, they will explore the facts about the wonderful creatures that live in this fascinating place. In the second session we will be performing the musical Swamped! Through the music and dialogue of the animals of the swamp, we will learn lessons of friendship, tolerance, and the courage to face the future! Singin in the Rainforest: Musical Presentation — July 10 Swamped: Musical Presentation — July 24 Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 5 Junior Science Program is led by Amanda Marshall Do you consider yourself a scientist? Have you ever thought of your house as a well stocked science lab? This summer in Junior Science, we’ll turn many everyday items into supplies for amazing science experiments! We’ll use the scientific method — Ask, Guess, Test, Discover — as we learn about things like colour, plants and chemistry. We’ll play with food, blow some bubbles, discover the secrets behind science tricks, and so much more. Come and join in the fun! Junior Physical Education Program is led by Jane Crutchfield Running, jumping, hopping and skipping our way through a variety of exciting activities and low organized games; The Junior Physical Education program works with kids to teach various motor skills as well as social skills, while playing many fun games. The children learn to communicate effectively by working together in a cooperative environment to reach their goal. Having a class like this allows all of the children to play, exercise and have fun together, while learning that being active is essential for a healthy lifestyle. Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program OP T IC AL 3 x ZOO M Intermediate Program Activities for Grades 4 – 9 Advanced Math is led by Ranjeet Bachonee — For grades 4 – 9 Elementary students will learn about triangular numbers, square numbers, hexagonal numbers and some of the patterns they make such as Pascal’s Triangle. We’ll go to higher dimensions with tetrahedra, simplexes, cubes and hypercubes. We expect you not to know anything about these before you start, but even if you know a little already you’ll learn more. High School students will learn about matrices, rotations, shears, symmetry groups and two-dimensional numbers. And maybe the golden ratio and slopes. We expect you not to know anything about these before you start, but even if you know a little already you’ll learn more. Prerequisites: 1. You are really enthusiastic about math. Caveat: This is math you won’t be learning in school. We’re doing it for fun, not for makeup. I’ll try to keep everybody engaged, including the most Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 6 advanced participants. You’ll need a notebook and pencils. Needs Good English This activity is repeated in Session 2 Advanced Origami is led byAnnick O’Shaughnessy — For grades 4 – 9 This activity is a sequel to the origami class given in the afternoon. This class is for returning campers or those who have a firm knowledge of basic terminology and can make a preliminary base, water bomb base and bird base by heart. We will learn other bases and create more complex models involving more steps. Some include modular boxes, new stars, animals, flowers, fish, bowls and vases and much more. We will also learn how to fold a square of paper in a few easy folds to make a pentagon and a hexagon to create stars. No need of a compass nor a protractor to achieve this. Looking forward to seeing some of my former campers take this class.. This activity is repeated in Session 2 All for One is led by Emannuel Alberola — For grades 4 – 9 We’ve all seen movies like The Musketeers or Pirates of the Caribbean and witness epic sword battles. In the All For One class, we look at what is modern fencing, the Olympic sport. In two weeks, we will cover all of the basics; the different types of weapons, the footsteps, the hand positions as well as learning how to judge a match and how a real tournament works. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program All Things Paper is led by Amberley Buray — For grades 4 – 9 Get crafty with paper!! Learn the art of paper quilling, collaging, carving, and much more. Make 3-dimensional paper structures, like paper toys and jewelery. Sculpt paper into beautiful creations through bending, twisting, and folding it. Join us as we learn some of the many things that can be done with this marvelous material. This activity is repeated in Session 2 And the Band Played On is led by Christian Ingelevics — For grades 4 – 9 Wouldn’t you just love to play in a band? Everyone is welcome: beginners as well as those with some experience. We will fill the air with music. Trumpets, clarinets and flutes will be provided. At the end of two weeks, you will be playing an instrument and will perform in a band concert for your family and friends. This activity will be offered again in the Session 2 for those who would like to progress further. Come and join us and discover the talent you have. Instruments will be provided but campers will be responsible for loss or damage. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Animation — The Magic of the Moving Image is led by Erik Goulet — For grades 4 – 9 During this workshop we make collaborative stop-motion animation productions called Animathons, whereby each camper picks up the story where the last person left off. Each exercise exploits a different animation medium; modeling Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 7 clay, toys, objects, salt, sand, lines on a chalk board etc... The animation is done by taking a series of photographs in succession, creating the illusion of continuous movement. In the second week, we produce animated narratives, exploring the art of storytelling, pacing and timing. The campers learn how to use a video camera to make stop-motion animation productions with easily available software that they can download on their home computers. At the end of the session the campers will receive a dvd with a quicktime movie of their productions. Come create zany animated stories by the Magic of the Moving Image! This activity is offered in Session 2 with Sherron Anglin Art in a Time Machine is led by Lou Standjofski — For grades 4 – 9 There is such inspiration in the work of famous and not so famous artists. We explore technique, material, ideas and style when mimicking and reproducing wonderful pieces for our exhibition. From cave drawings to the street art of today the artists are self-directed in the projects of their choosing. Needs transit card This activity will be repeated Session 2 Art of the Circus is led by Susan Mitchell — For grades 4 – 9 Many artists such as Toulouse Lautrec, Picasso and Alexander Calder all created artworks that were inspired by the magic and colour of the circus. Taking inspiration from them and using a Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program variety of materials including wire, wool, fabric, cardboard and paint, we will create our own circus themed art. So roll up, roll up, let’s go to the circus! This activity is repeated in Session 2 Arty Animalia Advanced is led by Susan Mitchell — For grades 7 – 9 Do you have a favourite animal? How about an imaginary, fantastical one? Or an animal character from one of your favourite books? Let’s make them! What about parents secretly Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 8 installing spyware on their kids’ electronics? Pizza is the best snack food, you say? All of these issues can be argued or debated. Have you ever tried to convince someone of something? Do you like to win? If you said yes, then this is for you. You will learn skills that will help you discover new ways to communicate, show leadership, and address your friends. In this program, you will learn debating, improvising and public speaking. Needs Good English This activity is repeated in Session 2 Bicycle Camp led by Valerie Free — For grades 4 – 9 You already know riding a bike is fun! So why don’t we make it more fun by learning to ride like a professional. Explore the traffic world in a space picked out just for you and your bicycle. Practice hand signals, braking and more with an experienced safe-cycling educator. You’ll even learn how to get on and off your bike in a cool way! This activity is offered twice in the morning in Session 2, and once in Session 1 Black Light Theatre led by François Lukawecki — For grades 4 – 9 Using special uv theatre lights, fluorescent objects seem to magically float as they are moved in front of a black set, with puppeteers dressed all in black. In two short weeks, we will write our own play, build our sets and props, create wild or crazy puppets, and perform in a darkened room using professional uv lights. One year, campers recreated the magic of Star Wars in 8 minutes, while Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program another group wrote a hilarious spoof on The Titanic, set in space, complete with alien invaders! This activity is great for those who are creative, those who love drama, and the quiet types who like to work backstage. This activity is offered only in Session 1 Bollywood Dance is led by Shefale Urva— For grades 4 – 9 Shefale Urva is a bilingual professional Bollywood dancer, choreographer and teacher. Her works include: choreo & performance in “Le President danse autrement” music video by famous Quebec artist Yann Perreau and a performance at 2013 Les Francofolies with artist Lynda Thalie for “Dance your pain away”. Bollywood is the name of Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. Bollywood dance is a commercial name for modern Indian dance. It’s a style that combines Indian folk and classical dance features with Jazz, Hip-Hop, Latin, Arabian etc. This is what makes it so appealing to a wider audience... so much so that it has been given a spot on the famous show “So You Think You Can Dance”. During the course, campers will learn the basics of rhythm, movement, grace, posture and expression unique to Indian dance. They will perform the choreographies learnt at the end of the session in a small showcase. Parents and family will be invited to support and encourage all their efforts during the showcase which will be performed in full Bollywood costume. Students are asked to wear comfortable clothing Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 9 to class. Indian dances are traditionally performed bare foot. Socks are to be avoided to deter from slipping. Campers will have a great workout during each class while learning about another culture and its civilization. They will experience firsthand the evolution of Bollywood dance as it has transformed and embedded itself into the hip culture Required: Indian outfits are needed for final performance. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Borne to Be Wild is led by Amberley Buray — For grades 4 – 9 If you were an animal what would you be? Have you ever wondered why fireflies glow, or how tiny Monarch Butterflies manage to travel over a thousand kilometers during migration? Discover neat animal facts, learn about magical and mythical animals, and explore the unimaginable relationship between animals and humans. Let’s learn together how truly magnificent animals are. Dive into their universe and be an animal for a day as we take field trips, interview guest speakers, and participate in fun activities. Have you exercised your brain today? is led by Tami Brewster — For grades 4 – 9 Don’t you love it when you’re learning and it’s fun? Ever played Reversi, Settlers of Catan, Rush Hour, or Blokus? All of these games will be part of your repertoire once you finish this activity! Build logic, Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program strategizing skills, and cooperative play as you challenge yourself and each other using various puzzle and board games! Risk, Perplexus, Othello, Pictionnary, Mastermind, Risk, and Make ‘n’ Break are only some of the games available which will improve the skills that you already have. Count on a good time! This activity is repeated in Session 2 Build a Computer from Scratch is led by Steven Lowry — For grades 4 – 9 The campers will spend the first week learning about the elements of a computer and will work in teams to build their own systems. In the second week, campers will learn about networking, installing an operating system, adding software and linking the computers together to play co-operative games. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Capturing Explorations is led by Allan Romano — For grades 6 – 9 In Capturing Explorations, you do just that: using video and still cameras, you will capture the exciting activities happening all around Explorations. You’ll interview campers and activity leaders to discover how soapstone sculptures are made, what the inflatable architecture is going to look like when it’s pumped up, why kids are learning to fence, how to make the perfect spring roll, and on and on.… you’ll get it all and edit it down using iMovie. You are the producers, the directors, the editors, the interviewers…the fabulous documentary you create will be posted on the Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 10 Explorations website. You can take the course in Session 1, or Session 2, or both. We’ll concentrate on capturing video, interviews and photographs right up to the end of Session 1, since many of the campers complete their projects towards the end. Session 2 we’ll continue to photograph and videotape, but work on editing the documentary will begin then as well. Both sessions will be fun, enriching, and enable everyone to find out about all the magic that happens at Explorations. Needs good English This activity is repeated in Session 2 Cartoonamania is led by François Lukawecki — For grades 4 – 9 This cartooning course is a laid back start of the day for those who love to draw, draw and draw! We will study various elements of cartooning: sketching bodies and animals, facial expressions, manga style, heroes and villains, etc. We will work with pencil and paper, glow in the dark and fluorescent paints, and more. We will use games and specific exercises to make cartooning fun, and to improve everyone’s drawing abilities. This activity is offered only in Session 1 Chords / Songs / Melody — Six Strings Attached is led by Ian Hanchet — For grades 4 – 9 This is an activity, for beginners, in “popular” guitar. Instruction will be performance-based and emphasize hands-on learning about all elements of music making. Campers will learn basic chords and accompaniment techniques, tuning Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program and maintenance. The knowledge is additive, and campers will be expected to play and review at home what they have learned at Explorations. Guitars will be provided, but campers will be responsible for damage or loss. This activity is offered only in Session 1 Circus Arts is led by Amanda Dunbar — For grades 4 – 9 This workshop promises to challenge participants’ physicality and creativity while being a ton of fun. Campers will learn juggling, balancing, acrobatics, performance techniques and more. They’ll also have the chance to show off their new skills for friends and family in a show on the last day. Be warned: the activities in this workshop may cause uncontrollable smiling! This activity is offered twice in the morning in Session 1 only Comedy Variety and Sketch Writing is led by Kevin Gasior — For grades 4 – 9 Want to produce, write and perform your own sketch comedy show like This Hour Has 22-minutes, The Rick Mercer Report or Saturday Night Live? This class will give you the opportunity to try just that. With some basic instruction and examples, written exercises, and group feedback you’ll learn how to write a monologue joke, create desk bits and write hilarious sketches. We will focus on commercial parodies and Saturday Night Live (snl) type sketches. This is an intro level sketch class geared towards those who have never written sketch before. The final production will be Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 11 our very own 20-minute morning show, written, produced and performed by you. Anyone can write sketch comedy. Come on out and see for yourself! This activity is repeated in Session 2 During the second week, they will learn to create and secure user accounts, configure a wireless router, learn proper methods to backup and maintain a computer to keep it running smoothly... as well as learn how to diagnose and repair some simple computer problems. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Computer Animation is led by Eric Goulet — For grades 4 – 9 Dive head first into the wonderful world of computer animation. Campers will learn how to use Autodesk’s Softimage professional program for creating digital models which they will color and animate. Each group will also revisit the landmark achievement of this new art form to better understand where the concepts originated. The first week of the class will focus on basic manipulation within the 3d environment, creation of objects, coloring, animating and finally generating a video file of the animation. During the second week, campers will apply the principles they have learned and create a short animated film. This workshop is a unique opportunity to get acquainted with fundamentals of 3d computer animation and discover why it is so popular in the movie and game industry. This activity is offered twice in the morning in Sessions 1 & 2 Computer Technician in Training is led by Steven Lowry — For grades 4 – 9 Requirement: Camper must have taken Build a Computer From Scratch previously. During the first week, campers will work in teams to assemble an entire computer, learn all the parts, install an operating system and network the computers together. Explorations 2014 — Intermediate Program Crazy Collage Creations on Canvas is led by Heather Hancheruk — For grades 4 – 9 The world of steampunk, which is the Victorians meets sci fi, comes alive in this crazy collage course on canvas! We will start with building textures using various materials, but most notably tissue paper with mod podge. We will add collaged items such as metallic objects like gears, keys, chains, and bits of jewellery (depending on availability of materials) to create our steampunk creations. Also, we will make several other types of collage paintings, such as extending an image that we glue to the surface of the canvas, and using textured backgrounds with words and messages in the foreground, after the text artist Jenny Holzer…come out and be creative! This activity is offered only in Session 2 OP T IC AL 3 x ZOO M Digital Photography Magic is led by Allan Romano — For grades 4 – 9 For those of you who are intrigued by photography and want to learn more, this is your chance! You’ll learn how to get the most out of your camera (if you don’t have your own, we have cameras to lend), how to get the most out of available light, compose your shots effectively, and to discover Explorations 2014 — Intermediate Program 12 photo opportunities anywhere. We’ll go all over the neighbourhood and into Explorations classrooms taking shots of everything, anything and everybody. You’ll learn amazing tricks and techniques for editing your shots in Photoshop and enable the magic of your photography to emerge. You’ll learn to crop correctly, adjust the colors and tones, use layers, add filters... you’ll make your best shots even greater. Your photos will be assembled into slideshows and, using Garageband, you’ll put together musical scores to accompany your presentations (no musical knowledge necessary!). When it’s all done, you’ll take home your masterpieces on a dvd which will amaze your family and friends. Discover the magic of photography! This activity is repeated in Session 2 Digital Sounds, Words and Music is led by Allan Romano — For grades 4 – 9 Digital Sounds, Words and Music gives you a chance to explore sound in many exciting ways. Using Macs, Garageband, microphones and other digital equipment, you can create anything you want: original music (you don’t have to be able to play a note!), crazy atmospheres, radio plays, animation scores, and sound productions with the comedy class. You’ll learn audio recording, sound editing, using loops, and so much more. At the end, you’ll take home your creations on a cd or memory stick, and some of the class productions will end up on Anything Goes, a ckut show broadcast on Saturday morning. If it’s sound, and you can imagine it, you can create it! This activity is repeated in Session 2 Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program English as a Second Language is led by Guneesha Sethi — For grades 4 – 9 This activity is designed for campers who are beginners or have a low proficiency in the English language. In the language class, campers will be given the opportunity to grow according to their degree of confidence and ability. We will explore many ways of dealing with language and communication through interactive activities. This class can be taken for all or just part of the day. English Second Language students may also select from other activities in the catalogue which do not require a high level of English language capability. This activity is offered twice in the morning and once in the afternoon in Sessions 1 & 2 Environmental Detectives is led by Amberley Buray— For grades 4 – 9 TIn this activity, campers are invited to act as Environmental Detectives to uncover the mystery of who or what is polluting the fish in the Grey Area watershed. To find the culprit we will dig up evidence, ponder over clues, and conduct experiments. Astonishing local to global connections will be made of the waste in our world. We won’t stop there though, campers will discuss new ways of considering the 4rs (Rethinking, Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling). This activity is repeated in Session 2 Exploring Indonesia as a Guide is led by Tina Hausen — For grades 4 – 9 Have you ever wanted to visit and explore far away, tropical, volcanic islands where Komodo Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program dragons and pre-stone age man still exist? In this activity I will introduce you to some of the diverse peoples and parts of Indonesia (Bali, Celebes, Java, Lombok, Papua) through the media of maps, films, slides, books and members of the Indonesian community living in Montreal. Examples of eco-tourism, intercultural exchanges and development projects will be shared. You will select a part of the Indonesian archipelago that interests you and become a young guide/ entrepreneur in that area. You will make a 3-d model of your island, create a logo and name for your enterprise, design a business card, a travel itinerary, development or cultural exchange program and create a brochure/website to entice young people to visit. You will represent Indonesia at an International Convention. A visit to the Biodome “jungle”, Insectarium or to an Asian market to buy foods to prepare for the convention could be offered. Drawing techniques will include technical instruction in areas like shading and proportion, as well as more creative components like media and style. Writing will be honed through brainstorming games and workshopping activities. We will experiment with unconventional books and we will develop writing and illustration skills. All of this will ultimately Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 15 lead to the creation of unique individual narrative masterpieces! This activity is offered only in Session 2 Improv! Theatre Sports + is led by Lou Standjofski — For grades 4 – 9 Theatre Sports is an excellent way to learn about the exciting world of improvisation. The students use their imagination to develop character and story while using the improvisation games that are played everywhere, The Most Annoying Person, Party Game, First Line, Last Line and many, many more. If you like to laugh and play different characters in crazy situations then this is for you!! We have enough time to then create! The + in theatre sports is then using our improvisation and theatre skills to create a piece that is unique to our ensemble. Origami is fun and requires only paper and some patience to produce quite impressive sculptures. The group Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program will progress from simple folds to more complex models. We will turn ordinary sheets of paper into flapping birds, cranes, sailboats, books, stars, wreaths, sonobe jewels, cubes, double dice, ninja stars, simple flowers, several modular models, letter folds, planes (of course!), business card structures, along with many more models. We will learn how to fold a sheet of 8½” × 11” sheet of paper and, with just a few easy folds, knowing where to cut, make it into an equilateral triangle without the use of a protractor or compass… then we will turn it into a Star of David or a snowflake. The many bases and technical jargon of Origami will be used throughout the class enabling students to pick up an origami book and follow its directions for themselves afterwards. We will take very large canvasses: 3 feet by 3 feet, and draw larger-than-life style portraits of famous people in the Pop style, using unusual but complementary acrylic paint colours to create our paintings. All sorts of design and programming possibilities can then be explored. There are resources in books and on the web. The instructor is interested in exploring cellphone-robot communications. The sound and music capabilities of these robots are exceptional! The programming language is quite elegant. Can you invent a robot to carry a cellphone and send text messages to your friend to report where it is? Can you use the Bluetooth in your phone to control your battle-bot in a Robotic Fight on the other side of a wall? Requirements. Should have done the Intro to Robotics, as this course builds on programming skills. This activity is repeated in Session 2 School of Rock is led by Ian Hanchet — For grades 4 – 9 This program will include all aspects of making a show, as well as time spent on examining and reproducing the roots and history of the music. This activity is repeated in Session 2 Silkscreen Printing and T-Shirt Design is led by Heather Hancheruk — For grades 4 – 9 Learn to make prints of famous people like Andy Warhol did with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. Imagine Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Justin Bieber immortalized in your art! Also, using various silkscreen printing techniques and free hand painting with fabric paint on t-shirts, learn to design your own inspiring designs. T-shirts are provided by the camper. Fabric inks will be used, as well as screen printing inks, in fabulous living colours! This activity is offered only in Session 1 Soapstone Sculpture and Clay Animals is led by Heather Hancheruk — For grades 6 – 9 Chip, carve and file away at a stone called soapstone (no, it is not made from soap, it’s an actual stone taken from the ground). The Inuit people of the North traditionally use this material to make carvings of animals and people from their environment and culture. I will teach you how to take a block of stone, and shape an animal from it, using rasps, files and chisels. Once the sculpture is shaped in detail, it is dry sanded, then wet sanded, until smooth to the touch. The last step is to spread mineral oil over the entire sculpture, until it is shiny, and the natural colours of the stone show through. We will take two full Explorations weeks to make the sculptures, in an hour and a half period every morning. Additionally we will sculpt Explorations 2015 — Intermediate Program 21 and shape detailed animals out of clay, if time permits. You may want to have protective glasses, such as the kind worn in science labs, to protect your eyes, and gloves for your hands. If you are severely allergic to dust, this activity would not be for you. Normal levels of allergy can cope with this activity just fine. We will learn to safely score and break beautiful coloured glass, grind our pieces and wrap them in copper tape, and finally solder our pieces to make a gorgeous artwork made of glass. Campers will also get to create mosaics using scrap pieces of glass but also tile, beads, rocks, etc. This is a fun yet relaxing afternoon activity, learning a hobby that has mesmerized artists for centuries. Learn to inject your sense of humour into class presentations, written assignments, speeches and maybe even the stand-up stage? This is your opportunity to poke fun at day-to-day life, summer camp and student life. Learn how to express your comedic thoughts in an organized fashion. Find out what it is like to step out onto an actual comedy club stage and perform your material. You will learn the skills required to conceptualize, outline, write, and perform your own stand-up comedy routine. What is a chunk? What is a tag? How to segue? Find out why keeping it real is so important when wyou’re making it up. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride through some of Montreal’s most amazing research and meet the cool scientists who are driving this research. We will visit professors and graduate students at local faculties of Science, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture and more. Our visits will include topics such as: Chemistry McGill’s Inorganic chemistry professor Audrey Moore does research on magnetic nanoparticles. Professor Moore uses impressive words like nanocatalysis, imidazolium, hydrogenation, and monodispersion — but she’s so smart she can make Explorations 2015 — Senior Program Professor Bradley Siwick studies something called Ultrafast Science. If that doesn’t sound cool enough, his research involves watching atoms collide and his recordings are often referred to as “molecular movies”. Entomology McGill’s Lyman Entomological is the second largest insect collection in Canada and includes 2.8 million bugs! They even have a live insect laboratory. With bee populations declining around the world, the McGill Apicultural Association is devoted to increasing awareness and interest in bees. They look after bee hives that are set up on the McGill campus and teach courses on how to care for your own honeybees. Astrophysics and Aerospace Engineering McGill astrobiology professor Hojatollah Vali investigates certain biomarkers that could suggest ancient biological activity in extraterrestrial materials. One of the courses Professor Vali teaches even includes a unit that explores whether ufo sightings are science or legend! With Montreal being the world’s fourth largest center of aerospace manufacturing, McGill’s Institute for Aerospace Engineering is an amazing place to get a look at what exactly “rocket science” is really all about. Explorations 2015 — Senior Program 25 Geology Professor Reinhard Hesse studies deep sea geology. He investigates giant rock samples drilled from the ocean floor, looking for tiny microscopic creatures in the sediments. Ingrid Birker is the curator of the invertebrate fossils and plants at Redpath Museum. Some of the programs she runs at the museum are so popular she’s gotten calls from people across the country wanting to attend! Immunology and Natural Resource Science Professor Nathalie Tufenkji’s research team at McGill is testing how maple syrup could be used to fight drug-resistant bacteria. She has also studied using cranberry extracts to kill infectious bacteria. Assistant Professor Jessica Head is interested in understanding and predicting how environmental chemicals can impact the health of wild birds. She is concerned about the thousands of chemicals that could cause harm to wildlife which are contaminating our environment. She is working to save the birds – what could be better than that! Enrollment is limited to 20 senior campers. This is an all-day program for either 2 weeks or 4 weeks. Priority will be given to campers who register for 4 weeks.
