Dear Forum Attendee:
Welcome to the 2015 IBI Annual Forum. We are pleased to host the Forum again this year at the Fairmont Hotel, one of
San Francisco’s grandest. Enjoy our beautiful city. We have a variety of exciting new sessions, resources and events for our
attendees, so I’d like to highlight a few items not to be missed.
We’ve expanded the capability of our mobile Forum app this year, so be sure to download it. The app not only has all the meeting
materials integrated into it, but the capability to connect you with all other attendees. After downloading the app by visiting
app.core-apps.com/ibiforum15 or searching “IBI Forum” on your smartphone app store, you can personalize your session schedule,
download presentation materials, and exchange contact information without having to walk around squinting at name tags.
This year’s Forum will focus on a critical issue for employers and their supplier partners: given the rapidly changing healthcare
environment, how can employers create and maintain a healthy, high-performing, at-work and productive workforce? We are
especially fortunate to have such a wide variety of speakers joining us this year to address these critical issues. We’ve emphasized
practical solutions that can be taken back to your offices and implemented, while also exploring innovative strategies that are
pushing the envelope and helping the field evolve.
In 2015, IBI is expanding ways to reach and engage with our members and we want the Forum to serve as a launching pad for our
additional member initiatives. In addition to the Forum, members can look forward to seeing regional conferences, webinars with
leading professionals, diverse case studies, industry-focused benchmarking groups, and research driven by member needs.
We hope you enjoy the Forum and San Francisco to the fullest. I know it will create opportunities for you to learn, share,
and grow in our common goal to improve the lives of our workforces and our businesses.

Today, there is more uncertainty than ever about how employers will manage workforce
health and productivity. IBI’s Board of Directors met last summer to discuss the volatility
of the health and productivity landscape and the diversity of employers’ options. This
preconference workshop will focus on three aspects of the Board’s discussion: (1) forces
influencing how employers manage workforce health and productivity, (2) implications
for how employers with a more “traditional” approach to healthcare will proceed and (3)
implications for how employers with a more “consumer-centric” approach will proceed.
Former IBI Board Chairman Chris McSwain will moderate the panel; panel members will
include Kathy McAlpine from Kraft; Gary Earl from Anthem-Wellpoint; Tammy Green from
Providence Health Systems and Brad Johnson from Sedgwick CMS. The audience is invited
to participate fully in the conversation.

To compete in an increasingly globalized marketplace, U.S. employers need a healthy, highperforming workforce. IBI’s forthcoming study, “The impact of health on job performance
and productivity,” clarifies the relationship between employee health, work climate, job
performance and organizational impacts from a series of employee and manager surveys.
The presentation and subsequent panel discussion will address the impact of the work
environment and other population health issues on business performance. Speakers will
provide their perspectives on best practices aimed at workforce health and better job
performance.

As employers consider the array of strategies and tactics used to control healthcare costs,
private exchanges are emerging as a focal point. The role of private exchange offerings in
workforce health and productivity management has not been explicitly determined, and is a
subject of some debate. This session will share expert perspectives regarding the role that
private exchanges may play in supporting workforce health management efforts. Each of the
panelists has a unique perspective, and together will provide an insightful look at the role of
private exchanges. By directly addressing the critical employer decision-making process, this
presentation will summarize available research and describe how workforce health, wellbeing, and performance can be further enhanced in the setting of private exchanges.

In the search for better access to quality healthcare in a changing landscape, there has been
a strong focus on technological advancement. Technologies are being developed to maintain
employee well-being as well as facilitate treatment and recovery when injuries and illnesses
occur. These novel technological advancements include telemedicine, real time visual
connectivity, Google glass, wearable monitoring devices, internet connected bio sensors,
three dimensional printers, and robotic devices. Panelists will speak to how technology
can expand healthcare coverage and service to more Americans in addition to how these
alternative delivery models offer opportunities for providers to connect with their patients
in a different way. This session brings together experts to discuss trends in innovation and
the measurements used to evaluate the impact of new technologies on cost, quality, and
workplace productivity.

Recognizing the impact consumer behavior has on health care and related costs, Unum and
UnitedHealth Group took aim at consumer health activation with their Consumer Activation
Index (CAI), a tool used for measuring decision making and short-term disability exposure.
In a study of 17 customers with 270k members, the CAI was used to determine if individuals
make an optimal clinical, financial or service choice when faced with a health care decision.
The CAI navigates individuals through 51 decision points to complete its assessment. By
better understanding consumer behavior, members can then seek to modify behavior to
achieve better health. The discussion will highlight how CAI works and its results in relation
to short term disability and productivity.

and performance of its workforce. In launching several innovative initiatives, UCLA Health
demonstrated material results: reducing healthcare service utilization through the Primary
Care Innovation Model (PCIM), increasing employee engagement through a Value-based
Care, Person Journey Model for employees in the UCLA health plan (in partnership with U.S.
Preventive Medicine), and decreasing workers’ comp costs through its WorkStrong program.
Speakers will discuss the health system redesign as well as integration, capacity growth, preprimary care, telemedicine, and home services.

Workshop D: Low Back Pain: A Major Employer Uses Guidelines to Manage Quality,
Costs and Outcomes (continued)
Up to 84% of the general population has been found to report low back pain (LBP) at some
point during their lifetime. This session will focus on a recent study by a major self-insured
employer to cultivate evidence on issues key to a successful program focusing on illness/
injury prevention, reduction of workers’ compensation claims, and disability and healthcare
cost savings. This study longitudinally tracked episodes of three types of ICD-9 diagnosis
code-identified back problems from 2001-2009 and found that care consistent with 10 of
11 guidelines was associated with lower total costs. Speakers will review how approaches
marked by more intensive resource use and lower guideline consistency were linked to poorer
LBP quality care, worse patient/employee outcomes, and greater direct and indirect costs.
Implications for employer involvement in guideline cost effectiveness will be discussed.

return on investment of $28 million in decreased LTD and other disability costs. This session will

With the changes in the ADAAA, awareness around the importance of—and requirements
for—employing people with disabilities continues to grow, but the understanding of the
opportunity has yet to take root across the business landscape. Myths and misconceptions
remain among employers for whom this is still new and unchartered territory. In an attempt
to discover and define the underlying patterns framing successful working environments
for those with disabilities, The Hartford has partnered with the research team at the
nationally recognized Beach Center on Disability at The University of Kansas. This session
discusses how to impact the future workforce based on recent independent research by The
University of Kansas. The session will focus on motivational factors affecting performance,
development, and retention. Speakers will discuss their successful program results related
to recruiting, developing, and retaining abled and disabled employees. Speakers will share
their findings on self-determination as a predictor of success in the workplace as well as
behavioral findings that measure employment success for employees with disabilities.
