Special Requests Survey is designated as the final session of your ComD courses where you get to display or present work from this semester. All ComD students are required to show work from each ComD studio course. Participation is mandatory, as this is your final. Check with each instructor to see what they expect you to show from their class. Failure to show at Survey will automatically lower your grade for every ComD course, regardless of your in-class performance this semester. If you need something specific for Survey, you can request it by filling out an Amenity Request form. This digital form will be available in ComD Imaging from March 31—April 10. Forms must be filled out in person; no emails will be accepted. Routine special requests include: computers, power outlets or a bit of extra space for large work. Due to space constraints, requests for additional space will be evaluated on a caseby-case basis and require a written, compelling rationale. Late forms will not be accepted. What happens at Survey? Students are issued a space to display their work and then asked to leave the floor for several hours. During this time, professors and administrators gather, peruse and share their opinions on the work presented. This enables the department to evaluate the overall development of students as well as to assess the entire Communications Design program. The exhibition also provides an opportunity for faculty to discuss assignments, share teaching techniques, choose scholarship and competition candidates and to jury graduating Senior’s work for the Design Show. Semester-end Surveys are also the only time when everyone—faculty, students, administration and the rest of the school—can view all the work of ComD students in all class levels. Determining Your Year If you are attending mixed level ComD classes this semester (your schedule is a combination of 200, 300 and 400-level courses) you will be issued a space on the day when most of your faculty will attend. You must inform your instructors well in advance so everyone is aware of when you will show. Seniors: A Note On Spaces Every Senior is automatically issued extra space for Spring Survey, so there will be no need to request it. Please do not ask for “extra” since all available space will be utilized. Deadline for Amenity Requests is Friday, 10 April, 5PM. Motion Reel You may submit work completed in either the Fall 2014 or Spring 2015 Semester. This will be a curated selection of work, chosen for technical and artistic merit. Submit files as 1920 x 1080 quicktimes. Frame Rate: 23.98 or 24 fps Codec: H264 or Prores. A 5 second slate with Student Name, Project Title, Course, Semester, & Instructor must be included. Submissions may be sent via wetransfer or myairbridge to Professor Mark De Pace: [email protected] Deadline for Video Submissions is Friday 24 April, 5pm. Late submissions will be eligible for the Fall 2015 Survey. prattcomd Spring 2015 Survey 1 Photo Workshop Professor Bill Kontzias will host two workshops for anyone interested in shooting Survey-worthy photos of their work. Lighting and tabletops will be set up for you to use. Bring your work and an external drive to collect your files. Professor Kontzias encourages students to attend both sessions. Friday, 10 & 24 April 10AM–5PM Seniors This Survey is different for you. You are expected to display your best work from this semester and exceptional work from previous semesters. You are being judged for the Design Show at this time. To help you prepare there will be a Presentation Seminar that will explain all you need to know about this year’s Survey and to make sure your presentation is as good as the work. Mandatory Presentation Seminar for Seniors will be held Tuesday, 7 April 12:30–2PM in Engineering Rm 307 Design Show The Design Show is the year-end juried exhibition of the best-of-the-best work by graduating students in Graphic Design, Illustration, Advertising, Jewelry, Industrial Design, and Interior Design. This showcase takes place in the ARC on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus where professionals and the public will see your work. ComD students are eligible for consideration if you are graduating this semester, you have uploaded your work (see submission directions at right) and you attended the ComD Presentation Seminar. 2 prattcomd Spring 2015 Survey ComD students are selected for the Design Show during Survey by the faculty. Once votes are tallied, selected students’ names will be posted outside of the ComD office after voting has commenced. If you are selected to participate in the Design Show, you will need to attend the mandatory Design Show meeting that takes place on Friday, May 1st, approximately 6pm, location will be announced when names are posted. If you do not attend, your spot will be forfeited from the Design Show and will be given to an alternate student. Due to the limited spaces at the Pratt Show, only 60 or so students are chosen to participate, many fewer than we would want to include. Submitting your work To be considered for the Design Show, you must upload your best work to the following URL: www.files.pratt-comd.com for record keeping. The work submitted is not your portfolio, but rather, examples of work that you feel showcase your talent, range and skills. This work will be kept for posterity and may be used by the department for competitions, promotions and the Design Show. Your files should suitable for printing: PDFs or JPGs at 300 PPI or higher at the intended physical size. Each file needs to be less than 70 MB in size. Motion files may be submitted using this tool as well, as long as the MOV, MPG or AVI files are smaller than 70 MB. You will also be able to include a URL to Vimeo, YouTube, or other video sharing sites. Deadline for work submission is Monday, 27 April by Noon Juniors and Sophomores You are to display work from each of your current ComD studio courses. Installing Work — All Students If you have work that requires a computer, you should print and pin up still frames of the piece regardless of whether you have a computer present or not. Students are required to display a name tag with their exhibit that has your name, major, courses and instructors. These tags are available in the ComD office and in this packet. Do not design your own name tag. You are a rock star designer, but we want you to use the boring tags we provide. The tag must be clearly visible. Do not forget your name tag. As Survey nears, a printout of assigned locations will be posted and emailed. Do not fret about your assignment. Please direct that kind of effort into creating an amazing layout for Survey. We look at all the work regardless of placement, even if you are one of those assigned to the bathroom. It is your work, not the space, which is being evaluated. Display spaces are approximately 4 ft. wide by 8 ft. tall, but do vary, so check your space well before Survey so you know how to prepare. See page 4. If you are issued a wall space or white panel, you are to use push pins only. No sticky mounting putty or Velcro allowed. If you are issued a black panel space, you are to use push pins or Velcro only. No tape, putty or anything funky that could damage them. If you’re in doubt, ask the ComD office. exhibited in a professional manner. Presentation affects content, so plan your arrangement in advance and mount your work neatly. Consider tacking up background paper to mask the imperfections of the space you’re issued. If you are using spray glue or spray paint, you are to use the spray booth area located on the third floor, room 306. If it is locked, call security at 718.636.3540. Technically, we are not allowed to make scary threats to students, but in this case we are: use the spray booths for spraying or else! Computer availability is extremely limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once we are out of computers to assign, that’s it. However, you are welcome to bring your own laptop, safety cable and lock if you wish. It would be wise to bring an extension cord; we cannot provide one for you. It will be your responsibility to collect your laptop for security reasons right after the faculty are done making the rounds. If you are issued a computer or iPad, pick-up for Sophomores and Juniors is 9AM, Seniors at 8AM. Finally, on your Survey date, get here early, seriously! Bad train commutes or traffic jams are not valid excuses for missing your Survey. Your final grades for all ComD courses are recorded at this time. Questions?
