JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Organizing Director ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION: FRESC: Good Jobs Strong Communities is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that builds power to ensure that our economy and political system work for all Colorado residents, especially low income people, communities of color and immigrants. We create this change by engaging unions, workers, faith communities and neighborhoods to advance innovative policy solutions. FRESC’s current main programs include affordable housing, construction careers and good green jobs, worker justice, and non-partisan voter education and engagement. MORE ABOUT WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR: We are seeking a professional organizer with at least five years of relevant work experience in the labor movement, non-profit or public sector, or comparable experience, who is passionate, enthusiastic and visionary. This person will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of FRESC’s organizing campaigns and program areas, both driving pieces of the work and supervising organizing staff. We are looking for someone willing and able to learn any new subject matter involved in the work, but who comes with strong abilities and experiences to draw upon to help take the organization’s work to the next level. Qualified applicants should be interested in working with FRESC’s talented staff to build upon previous programmatic successes and grow the capacity of the organization. Applicants will supervise several staff members and work closely with FRESC’s Executive Director and Deputy Director to provide program oversight to the organization. The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, and enjoy building and maintaining relationships with staff and stakeholders. RESPONSIBILITIES : ● Organization Building and Program Implementation o Position FRESC as leader in non-profit and labor sector to maximize opportunities for systems change that advance the organization’s mission and vision. o Oversee significant portions of program work in consultation with the director team and key stakeholders. o Partner with Executive Director to help secure funding for organizing work by cultivating funder relationships and developing proposals. o Identify opportunities for community organizing within all current and potential FRESC work. o Monitor and evaluate community organizing programs, practices, and initiatives to ensure quality and effectiveness; identify and implement changes and/or improvements where needed. Act as a rr/cwa/aflcio resource for other directors and staff by providing technical support within areas of responsibility and expertise. o Lead inter-disciplinary teams with FRESC and outside organizers, organizational leaders and other advocates to plan and advance policy change initiatives. o Build shared ownership for FRESC’s work among staff and key allies, with a particular emphasis on organizing. o Communicate with partner organizations, including labor unions, progressive community organizations, social service organizations, environmental groups, academics and think-tanks, religious institutions and others. o Support FRESC’s fundraising activities. o Participate in FRESC’s racial justice trainings. ● Organizing responsibilities o Identify new target constituencies to organize, consistent with FRESC’s existing and future work as well as FRESC’s values. o Recruit and mobilize individuals through one-on-one visits and organizational presentations. o Plan, organize, facilitate and debrief actions and meetings. o Educate community about FRESC issues and campaigns. o Develop and cultivate relationships to increase allies’ organizational capacity and campaign participation. o Develop materials for FRESC recruitment, community actions, etc. o Monitor and/or participate in appropriate governmental and public meetings and processes consistent with FRESC campaigns, including lobbying, testifying, etc. ● Supervision o Supervise organizing staff , including providing broad organizational vision and supporting staff in developing and executing goal-oriented work plans. o Spend time “in the field” with organizers. o Train and support organizing staff in the strategy and execution of issues and campaigns. o Work with organizers on professional development plans. o Oversee organizing goals. o Foster a team-oriented, supportive, accountable work environment at FRESC. o As part of the director team, negotiate the collective bargaining agreement with staff represented by a union. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Organizing and Leadership Skills: o At least 5 years of organizing experience working in labor, environment, and/or social justice community, or comparable transferable experience, including at least one year of community organizing experience. o Advanced degree in relevant field a plus. o Experience designing, coordinating, and leading organizer training programs desired. rr/cwa/aflcio o Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and track record for driving change. o Experience working with low income communities, communities of color, and/or the labor movement. o Commitment to understand race, class, gender, and other equity issues as part of your work. o Ability both to lead and to work well in teams. o Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to large groups of people. o Self-directed and able to handle multiple projects and responsibilities. o Willingness and flexibility to work “campaign hours” when necessary (nights and weekends); ability to work well under stress and deadlines. o Excellent planning and problem solving skills. o Outstanding political strategy skills. o Excellent relationship and coalition building skills. o Good facilitation skills. o Recruitment and leadership development experience. o Willingness to learn, show initiative and creativity. o Ability to travel locally and have reliable transportation. o Computer competency. o Proficiency in both spoken and written Spanish preferred. Management Skills: o Experience supervising and training organizers or intern organizers. o Capacity to create, inspire and strengthen a healthy work culture. o Ability to manage and drive multiple projects with complex relationships. o Ability to work well under stress and deadlines, and maintain confidentiality. o Ability to successfully work in a team and independently.
