HydraChrome Kit Instruction Sheet
ALWAYS SHAKE PRODUCTS WELL BEFORE USING
ALWAYS WEAR LATEX GLOVES WHEN HANDLING ALL PRIMED SUBSTRATES
DO NOT USE SOLVENTS OR ALCOHOL BASED PRODUCTS TO CLEAN
USE A CLEAN PROFESSIONAL PAINT BOOTH
DO NOT USE DETAIL RAGS. ONLY MICROFIBER RAGS (LINT FREE)
Air Supply—Dry and free of oil. Water separator, particulate filter recommended.
Use standard automotive HVLP techniques.
Spray Gun Nozzle Size Requirements (for chroming step):
1.0mm to 1.2mm
Air Pressure
35 to 40 psi
Room Temperature
70 F constant
NOTE: Pay close attention to High Humidity readings as this will adversely affect curing times
Organic vapor respirator to be worn at all times.
We recommend conducting a test on a similar substrate before performing the chroming process (this will save time, money, and
effort.
SuperChrome 54X has a recommended shelf life for one year. Simply pour the remaining chrome from your HVLP gun to the
original storage container and return to the shelf. Seal properly.
PRE PRIMING (You can prepare this step in advance. It does not have to be done on the day of chroming)
Pay close attention during this step. This will determine your end result.
Step 1: Substrate surfaces should be sanded and prepared to ensure a smooth, flat surface using standard bodywork techniques
with a minimum of 320 grit sandpaper finish. The smoother the finish the better the final chrome effect will be.
Step 2: Pre-prime the substrate using an epoxy primer (ie PPG DeFleet). Allow to completely dry. Then sand using 800 or above
grit sandpaper.
Step 3: After you lay your epoxy primer down, paint with a black base before the next step. For example, NanoChem Black Base
Paint. Any black paint will work, but NanoChem is a one coat application and a thick paint. It will fill in and make your item
smoother for a more professional finish. Please contact Big Brain Graphics for more information. Very durable paint.
SUPERCHROME PRIMER APPLICATION (Super Chrome Black Base Product)
The SuperChrome Black Base Product needs to be mixed with the Black Base Hardener. The mix ratio is 2:1.
Clean Surface with alcohol (solvent) based degreaser and tack before spraying Black Base. (We use UPOL 2023).
Step 3: Apply 1 tack coat, wait 5 minutes, then apply one medium wet slick coat of the Black Base Coat.
NOTE:
It is recommended waiting a minimum of 24 hours cure time at 70 degrees F room temperature to allow all of the tail solvents to
evaporate before you proceed to the chroming application. 36 hour dry time is desired.
SUPERCHROME APPLICATION
Step 4:
Shake SuperChrome contents thoroughly.
Apply 2 or 3 coats of SuperChrome approximately 10 inches away from the surface (lightly fog the chrome on). You will want to go
in a side to side motion with your fan wide open over your entire product. Then, spray the opposite way on the item to get full
coverage. You will be misting the SuperChrome product onto your item. You will be able to see it flashing 4 to 5 seconds after it
lands on the item. This is how you will be able to tell if you have the right adjustment.
Do not apply too many layers of the chrome as it will dye back producing poor results.
Allow 5-10 minutes between each coat to dry. Do not allow too long as it will produce poor results.
Use a microfiber cloth in between coats to wipe away the dried atomized chrome in between each coat. (This is a necessary step.
Do not skip this step). Do not use a wax based tack cloth. A microfiber cloth works best.
Use your pressurized air hose to blow away and lint or dust that may have come off your cloth.
If the Chrome does not flash immediately after the first or second coat application call for technical assistance.
Allow to dry for 24 hours before continuing to the next step.
SEALER
Step 5: Apply one light coat of the SuperChrome Mid-Clear using a .8 tip (airbrush is recommended with a .5 tip) to protect
Chrome. This will dry in approximately 2-3 hours. Your psi on your airbrush should be set at 20-25.
Mid-clear has no hardener. Pour and spray. You must fog this on. Very light dry coat. This is just to protect your chrome from
dyeback.
HYDRAGRAPHING FINISH
Step 6: Apply one wet coat of the HydraChrome TopCoat and allow to dry for 8 hours at 70 F.
NOTE: Candy tints can be added to the topcoat to achieve a Candy Chrome effect. Please visit our online shop
(www.gobigbrain.com) for high quality color candies. These can be used for more than chrome applications, and can be added to
your clear coat to get a candy effect. It doesn’t have to be used with the sealer and Chrome. It can also just be added to your clear
coat to get the effect over your dip and finish.
The Hydragraphing step will allow you to dip to the chrome. After you are done dipping, clear with a high quality UV protected
gloss clear coat.
You do not have to dip with this kit and you can use it as a regular SuperChrome kit. Just skip the HydraChrome TopCoat and
finish with a high quality urethane clear.
