Description of Luke The
Evangelist

This Apostle was an Antiochean, a physician by
trade, and a disciple and
companion of Paul. He
wrote his Gospel in Greek
after Matthew and Mark,
after which he wrote the Acts of the Apostles,
and dedicated both works to Theophilus, who,
according to some, was Governor of Achaia. He
lived some eighty-six years and died in Achaia,
perhaps in Patras, the capital of this district. His
emblem is the calf, the third symbolical beast
mentioned by Ezekiel (1:10), which is a symbol
of Christ's sacrificial and priestly office, as Saint
Irenaeus says.

Adult Sunday School Classes (Adults Seeking Knowledge)
Beginning in September, we added two Adult Sunday School Classes:
One was entitled Orthodoxy 101 and the other was Step by Step with Christ taught by
Najwa Bateh.
We have decided to stagger the start date of Najwa’s class and not offer the two
simultaneously. For October, see the Orthodoxy 101 Schedule (see page 14).
Beginning November 6th—December 18th - Najwa Bateh will teach a study of the Gospel
of John.
Thank you to all our Adult Sunday School Teachers and Volunteers. We are off to a great
start. Alexis Pappas

THE GLORY OF GOD’S PRESENCE...
2
By-+Father Paul Costopoulos
One of the purposes of the Divine Liturgy is to praise and glorify God. Doxological prayers that are interspersed throughout the service assist us. One such prayer
is that which precedes the Small Entrance.
“For you O God are a good God who loves
mankind,” the priest prayerfully intones on
behalf of the people, “and to you do we
ascribe glory, to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit always now and
forever and to the ages of ages.”
Why praise God for his glory as we
do in the Liturgy? The reason is a simple
one. It is because the glory of God sweeps
into our souls on the wings of every waking
moment. His glory is like the dawning of a
new day. So wondrous is it that the Fathers
of the Church tell us that it has the power to
calm our soul, enlighten our minds, and fill
our existences with ineffable joy.
The glory of God does not come to
one by accident or chance. Instead as
Fr. Stylianopoulos’ once suggested to us
years ago in one of our New Testament
courses at Holy Cross, it comes to one
through the will. What this means is that if
one truly wishes to experience communion
and union with God, referred to by the
Orthodox Church as theosis, he must “will”
it. If one doesn’t really will it and come out
for it and discard anything and everything in
life that could possibly retard him from
experiencing it, then He will never really
know God and His glory.
How does one come to know God?
Allow me to suggest three ways:
One, there is prayer. Every person
as St. John Chrysostom and Dimitri Rostov
suggest must have a rule of prayer. A “rule
of prayer” simply requires that everyone set
aside a definite times during the day for
KOINONIA
prayer and Christian meditation in order to
praise God,
and to check up on one’s
internal and external conduct.
Two, there is the Eucharist, the
Sacrament of Holy Communion. Communion is
that which allows one to abide in God and know
Him. Jesus in John 6:56 says, “He who eats my
flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in
Him.”
And three, there is attentiveness to one’s
soul. Attentiveness necessitates that we be
methodical in our approach toward God. Too
often times Orthodox Christians fail to realize
that the business of spiritual growth to which all
of us are called, calls for order, method and
intelligent organization. Just as there can be no
success in any business or professional
enterprise or other important activity without
whole-hearted devotion and self-consecration,
so also there can be no success in one’s pursuit
of God. Deuteronomy 4:9 puts it this way, “If …
you shall seek the Lord your God (i.e. in an
organized manner), you shall find Him, if you
shall seek Him with all your heart and soul.”
Our God who is a good God who loves
mankind can be found.
To discover and
experience Him one must extol Him on a day to
day basis. How? By praising Him as we do in
the Liturgy which we must regularly attend? To
be sure!
But also and especially by living for
Him and encountering Him through prayer,
Eucharist and a methodical spiritual search.
The unequivocal promise of Scriptures and
God’s Holy Church, of course, is that those who
extol God thusly are those who will be blessed
by Him both in this life and in the life to come.

How Often Should We Receive
Holy Communion To receive Communion the usual two or three times a
year is good and helpful, but to receive Communion more frequently is far better. Remember, the nearer a person comes to
the light, the more light he gets. The closer he draws to the
fire, the warmer he is. The nearer he approaches sanctity, the
more saintly he becomes.
In the same way, the more often one draws near to God
in Communion, the more one receives light and warmth and
holiness. My friend, if you are worthy to make your Communion
two or three times a year, you are worthy of making it more often, as St. John Chrysostom tells us, by maintaining your own earlier preparation and
worthiness. But what does stop us from taking Communion? The answer is our carelessness and laziness, and we give way to these faults so much that we are not sufficiently
prepared to be able to receive Communion.
There is another way of looking at this problem, too. People like this do not, in
fact, obey God's commandment as they imagine they do. Where did God, or any one of
the saints for that matter, bid us communicate two or three times a year? Nowhere is
this found. Therefore we must be very sure that, when we obey a command, it is our duty
to see that we are obeying it exactly as it says. That is, we must pay attention to the place,
the time, the purpose, the method and all the conditions in which it should take place.
Thus the good action that we wanted to perform will be perfect in every detail and well
pleasing to God.
You can see that the same thing applies to the case of Holy Communion. It is both
necessary and very beneficial to the soul for a person to receive Communion frequently. It
is also in obedience to the commandment of God. It is a good deed well done and wellpleasing to God. On the other hand to communicate only three times a year is neither in
obedience to a command nor a perfect good deed. Because it is not good in itself, its results are not good.
Therefore, like all the rest of God's commandments, every one requires the right
time, as it says in the Book of Ecclesiastes, "For everything there is a season." This is true
also with regard to the command about Holy Communion. We must receive the proper
time; and that means the proper time is the moment when the priest exclaims, "In the fear
of God and with faith and love draw near."
Is this heard only three times a year? Oh, no. Yet, although everyone must eat two
or even three times a day in order that the material body may live, must the unfortunate
soul only eat three times a year - or perhaps even once-the food that gives it life in order
to live the spiritual life? And isn't this completely absurd? Even if this is not the case, I am
very much afraid that we may be deriving no benefit from complying with the commandments, because we water them down and spoil them. So we are not keepers of the law,
but breakers of the law.
PRAYERS BEFORE COMMUNION
"I believe, Lord and I confess that You are truly the Christ, Son of the living God,
who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the greatest. Moreover, I believe
that this is in truth Your sacred Body and that this is in truth Your precious Blood. Therefore, I beseech You, have mercy on me and forgive me my offenses, both voluntary and
involuntary, whether in word or deed, willing or unwilling; and render me worthy to partake
of Your sacred mysteries without condemnation, for remission of sins and everlasting life.
Amen.
"Son of God, receive me today as a partaker of Your mystical supper; for I will not
speak of the mystery to Your enemies, nor will I give You the kiss of Judas. But like the
thief I will confess You. Remember me, Lord, in Your kingdom."
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
"We thank You, loving Master, benefactor of our souls, that again today You have
counted us worthy of Your heavenly and immortal Mysteries. Set us a straight path; make
us all firm in reverence of You; keep watch over our lives; safeguard our movements;
through the prayers and intercession of the glorious Theotokos and ever-virgin, Mary and
of all Your saints. Amen."

PHILOPTOCHOS UPDATE
Congratulations to all our officers for this Ecclesiastical Year: President-Sonthe
Burge, Vice-President-Stephanie Dikis, Recording Secretary-Rhonda Yearout, Corresponding
Secretary-Nikki Derzis, Treasurer-Chum Atkins, Assistant Treasurer-Lani Graphos.
Our first meeting for the new year is on October 11th at 6:30, Banquet Hall. We are
looking forward to seeing you all there, old members, new members, potential members-------Y'ALL COME!!! Remember, we want to have the most members EVER!
Philoptochos was very active in the preparation of pastichio, koulourakia,
melomacarona, baklava and kourambeides. Big job? Yes! Labor intense? Yes! Tiring? Yes!
Fulfilling? Yes! An experience that encompassed all our senses: Hearing---the laughter of
the workers; Seeing---the product made, a sense of acccomplishment; Tasting---absolutely
delicious; Smelling---the baking, ummmm! Wonderful!; Touching (feeling)---a sense of
family, comraderie, love.
On Sunday, 9/11 Fr. Paul led us in a prayer service remembering all who perished/
suffered on that "Day of infamy", 9/11/01. It was a most emotional, moving service that
affected all in attendance, young and old. A feeling of family united in sadness, a sense of
compassion and HOPE permeated throughout the church- few, if any, dry eyes.
We were also blessed with the attendance of Fr. Confessor Gregory who served with
Fr. Paul in the celebration of the liturgy on 9/11. Fr. Gregory spoke with our young people, a
message for all of us. The theme: We all at some point during our life's journey will/do have
crosses to bear. We may be young, we may be old, but we will bear a cross or crosses.
Our Lord carried a heavy cross on His walk to Calvary. He fell, He rose. He fell, He
rose. He was in great pain. He fell and an impatient Roman soldier pointed to a young,
muscular stranger in the crowd to come forward to help Jesus carry His cross. This was
Simon of Cyrene who is mentioned in three of the Gospels.
In our community who is our Simon when we are carrying our cross? Most certainly, it
is our church and our church family. What is the motivating characteristic of a Simon?
LOVE!!
As the commentary in the Orthodox Study Bible states (Mark 15:21), "The spiritual
message is that we, like Simon (whose name means "obedience"), are not only called to carry
the cross Christ sets on us, but seeing Christ in others, we are called to bear each other's
burdens as well (Gal. 6:2)."
Philoptochos, too, as an organization, as individuals strives in our own humble way to
be a Simon.
As Mother Teresa said, "Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every
hand".
God Bless,
Helen Bekrakis

Thank you so much for your love and kindness during my recent illness.
Your telephone calls of cheer, letters of concern, cards that expressed how much you
care and especially your prayers has been a source of strength to me at a time when I needed
it most. I’m feeling better each day, keep those prayers coming my way!
I love you all,

Subject: [ATLANTAMETROPOLISYOUTH] WINTER YOUTH RALLY 2011 IS HERE!
***THIS JUST IN***
NEWS FROM THE YOUTH OFFICE
Winter Youth Rally 2011 is almost here!
It's time to make our preparations for Winter Youth Rally! We are excited for this year's Rally and hope you are too!
Our theme for this year is "Is the Yoke on Me?" from Matthew 11:28-30, which reads, "Come to Me, all you who labor
and are heavey laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light."
The Bible Bowl topics this year will be The Gospel of Mark and the book of Exodus.
Please see the attached flyer for information.
Lead Advisors, please read the attached letter to see this year's changes.
May our Lord grant us a safe, fun Winter Youth Rally! We can't wait to see you there!
In Christ's Service,
Presbytera Marilisse I. Mars
Youth Coordinator

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Training Course Offered
Please contact Alexis Pappas by October 9th
Many of you have noticed the transformation of the old nursery to the new Children’s Atrium. The
Children’s Atrium 1 is open to children in grades 4k-1st grades. It is a hands-on didactic approach to discovering Christ, the Good Shepherd through scripture, tradition and liturgy. It is the goal at our Cathedral to
continue to grow this ministry and eventually open Atrium 2 (2nd – 4th grades) and Atrium 3 (5th & 6th
grades). In order to grow, we need to continue to train catechists (those who work in the Atrium).
If you are interested in attending a Atrium Level 1 course, one is being offered beginning October
14 at St. Mary’s on the Highlands. We have a special rate with St. Mary’s and there will be no cost to you.
Please read below more information about the course:
th
