LISBON
SINERGI SECOND THEMATIC SEMINAR
The SINERGI Project (Social Integration through Urban Growth Strategies) is a EU funded project of four partner cities (Skopje, Turin,
Lisbon, and Zagreb) that creates a platform for creative and open debate between local authorities, academics, experts, civil activists
and problem of social integration in ever growing cities.
NEW URBAN ISSUES, NEW APPROACHES
The planning process and the approaches to managing urban growth must respond to the pace of dynamic changes that are taking place
in the contemporary urban environments. Therefore, the application of advanced theoretical knowledge and innovative approaches to
guiding urban development should prevail over the old routines and patterns. It involves researchers from different fields addressing
the issue of urban development of cities in transition and after transition, discussing new models of urban planning, digital tools
for visualization and evaluation of the urban changes and new interactive communication approaches and tools for better citizens’
participation. The network of academic and research partners will meet in Lisbon acting as an essential part of the SINERGI project
network of knowledge providing tools and ideas for integrated and inclusive urban development.
The main objective of the SINERGI Project Lisbon Thematic Seminar is to create a platform of knowledge about current and new urban
problems that might offer new approaches and solutions to the persisting problems of the urban growth and social sustainability. The
aim of the seminar is to bring together local authorities, Universities and research community, civil organizations and civil activist
and citizens in a creative and open debate about new tools and practices in cities as it is the co-governance model that Lisbon is
operating. This debate should inform the stakeholders about the potential benefit of use of novel and digital tools for better analysis
and understanding the processes that are shaping our cities but most of all should enable different social and interest groups to take
an active participation and exchange of knowledge with experts, researchers and activist in a joint effort to create strategies, projects
and communication tools that will reinforce the process of city management. This complex network of different stakeholders will
enable decision makers to challenge their perception of the contemporary city and will legitimize policies of urban management with
new and integrated urban knowledge.
Lisbon Thematic Seminar is organised in five working sessions:
NEW URBAN POLITICIES AND PROJECTS FOR AN INCLUSIVE CITY | What is the balance between urban policies and projects
aiming the promotion of more inclusive cities? What is been done to improve the relationship between long term planning tools and
shorter planning tools? How far those policies and projects have reinforced social cohesion and decreased the socio-urban segregation?
How have been measured their social and urban effects? What has been done to monitor and evaluate these policies and projects? Is
it possible a new model of integrated urban planning?
NEW APPROACHES FOR MORE JUST CITIES | What new approaches, models and projects of urban development are emerging in
cities? How far they have built better and more just cities? What have been done, in order to measure the impact of the new approaches
on the production of a more just city?
URBAN EXCLUSION AND NEW COLLABORATIVE APPROACHES| What is the impact of the interactive and collaborative
approaches for better and more just cities? How to overcome the contradictions between the interactive dynamics towards to
bureaucracy? What have been done in order to contribute to the citizens’ empowerment on the spatial transformation processes?
What is the role of local administration? What is the role of communities? What has been done to create a new model of governance in
which the vision of decision-makers can be reconciled with the ideas and visions of citizens, as well with the expert knowledge coming
from Universities and research community?
NEW DIGITAL TOOLS FOR BETTER CITIES AND AWARENESS CITIZENS | What has been done in the field of new technologies,
in order to simplify the decision making process of urban issues and to contribute to the citizens awareness on the urban transformation
processes? What have been done to create new tools that respond to different social groups, with a language and forms of
communications that can be understood and accessible by different actors in the territories and can answer better to the interests
of all citizens? In which situation, have the new technologies of information and communication in architecture and urban planning
contributed to make cities more inclusive? What is the new role of digital tools in the technical field of architecture and urbanism, for
the construction of better and more just cities? What is the role of the living labs in the processes of making better cities for everyone?
What have been done in order to measure the impact of the new digital tools on the production of a better city and awareness citizens?
LEARNING FROM HISTORY AND CULTURE | What is the contribution of ancients working housing models in contemporary demand
for a more inclusive and fairer city. What can we learn today from top down processes of social housing planning? What has been done
to rescue and integrate in the practice of urban planning the vision on the city of artists, intellectuals and civil society.
