7 Easy Ways
to Protect Your Smartphone
By: Marc Saltzman
As they say on Twitter, ICYMI – “in case you missed it” – online
threats are on the rise.
Data breaches surged by 23 percent last year, and with
nearly a million new pieces of malware (“malicious software”)
created per day – according to the 2015 Internet Security
Threat Report from Symantec.
Another startling fact: almost 1 in 5 Android apps available last
year were actually malware in disguise, says the same report.
Regardless of which smartphone you use, it’s critical to
prevent your personal (and professional) information from falling
into the wrong hands. Even if your device isn’t lost or stolen,
your data could still be accessible by a remote thief if not
properly protected.
These following seven tips should help better secure your
smartphone.
1. Use a passcode. All smartphones let you lock it with a
code – such as a 4-digit PIN – so that none can access your
information should your device be lost or stolen. Yes, it can
be a pain to type in the PIN every time you use your phone,
but you’ll be thankful a PIN is in place if you lose your device.
Some phones offer a password, pattern lock or fingerprint
login. Avoid a facial recognition option, if it exists, as it isn’t
as secure as the others.
2. Be app-savvy. Only download apps from trusted, reputable
sources. Generally speaking, there isn’t anything to worry
about when you browse and buy apps from the various
online application stores – but there have been instances of
malware that attempts to lift your information off the phone,
especially on the Google Play store for Android devices.
Therefore, read up on the developer you’re downloading
from first, as well as comments from previous users.
3. Don’t be gullible. Delete suspicious text messages from
people you don’t know, don’t click on any suspicious web
links or call any unknown phone numbers. Scammers and
spammers are now targeting smartphone users, be it
through text messages, emails or requests to call a number
that appears to be from a legitimate source – but it’s not. On
a related note, frequently examine your cell phone, bank and
credit card statements for suspicious charges and report
them immediately.
4. Set up remote wipe. If your phone is lost or stolen, you
can remotely lock it, display a message (“Please call me for
a reward”), wipe the data clean and/or track it on an online
map. But don’t try to retrieve a stolen smartphone on your
own – work with the authorities to recover it by bringing
them the proof of its whereabouts. Free programs include
Find My iPhone (iPhone), Android Device Manager (Android),
BlackBerry Protect (BlackBerry) and Find My Phone
(Windows Phone) – but all four require you to set it up ahead
of time.
10
Canadian Wireless Trade Show Magazine
5. Back-up is a must. Always back-up your phone’s
information – in case it becomes lost, stolen or damaged.
The easiest way to do it is to connect your phone to your
computer via the USB cable in the box and follow the
onscreen prompts to make a back-up to the hard drive (and
charges up the phone at the same time). If nothing happens
when you connect the phone, there are free apps that will
make a back-up copy of the phone’s info for you. Some
apps back up data onto a removable microSD memory card
or cloud service.
6. Consider antivirus. Given how common malware is
found on mobile devices these days – especially on Android
devices -- it might pay to protect your data with security
software. Personally, I use Symantec’s Norton with Backup
(see tip no. 6), but there are many to choose from. Not only
does this software protect your device from viruses and
other malware but good ones also lock down your privacy
settings and scans Google Play app downloads and memory
cards for threats.
7. Use two-step verification. Many services offer a
smart security feature called “two-step verification” or “twostep authentication,” which adds extra protection to your
favourite sites – such as Gmail, Dropbox, Facebook and
OneDrive – as it not only requires your password to log in,
but also a randomly-generated security code sent to your
mobile phone (via text message or an app). Only once you
type in the code and your password will you gain access to
your files.

4 Great Uses for Your
Old Smartphone, Tablet
By: Marc Saltzman
There’s one obvious downside to our
fascination with gadgets: obsolescence.
Just when we start to get used to our
new purchase – be it a smartphone,
tablet, laptop or television – it seems
there’s a better one around the corner.
To make matters worse, you might find
the newer and shinier tech toy costs
even less than the one you bought.
Still, many of us can’t resist an
upgrade. Instead of ditching your older
products, however, consider handing it
down to someone (or an organization)
that will appreciate it. Or maybe sell it. Or
trade it in.
Or, why not hang onto it yourself and
find another use for it?
Wait, what?
Perhaps you haven’t thought of some
ancillary uses for your aging tech. We’ve
offered a few suggestions, below,
specifically tied to an old phone or tablet
you’re no longer using.
If you have any suggestions of your
own, be sure to leave them in the
Comments section.
Surveillance Camera
If you have a spare smartphone or tablet,
you can use it as a free Internet-enabled
security camera.
24
Canadian Wireless Trade Show Magazine
Just install one of the free apps that
use your device’s camera – such as
Presence (iOS, Android), Manything
(iOS) or Salient Eye (Android) – and leave
it plugged in, turned on and pointed
towards something you want to keep
an eye on. Now, from you primary
phone or tablet, you can see what your
older device sees, or set up motion alerts
so you’ll be notified if any movement
is detected.
Some of these apps will record
footage for you, as well, to the phone or
tablet itself or a cloud solution. Many of
these apps also allow for two-way voice
communication in case pet lovers want
to interact with their dog or cat while at
work, perhaps.
Universal Remote
Why spend hundreds of dollars on a
touchscreen universal remote when
you’ve got a perfectly good smartphone
or tablet that can do the trick?
Some tablets – including a couple of
Samsung and Sony models – have an IR
(infrared) blaster to control your home
theater out of the box. Even if yours
doesn’t, many new Smart TVs, Internetconnected Blu-ray players and media
boxes/sticks
support
remo
remote apps for your iOS or
Andr

device. As long as
you have Wi-Fi, you’re
goo

Big Fishes (Android;

to check the list of
c
compatible TVs on the
a
apps’
respective
websites.
You can also use
your
old
tablet
or smartphone to
control other devices
in your home, such as your smart
thermostat, lights, multi-room sound
system, and more.
Back-up Drive
Instead of buying an external hard drive,
consider wiping your old phone or tablet
clean, connecting it to your PC or Mac
via its USB port and dragging and
dropping your important photos, videos,
music or documents onto it.
Now you can keep this back-up in a
safe place – just in case you need it in the
future. (It’s not recommended to keep a
back-up in the same room as your
computer just in case of fire or flood.)
Sure, you might only get 16-, 32- or
64-gigabytes of memory with a spare
phone or tablet – compared to a few
terabytes with an external hard drive –
but it might just be enough. Plus, it’s still
an ideal way to protect your important
files without having to spend any
additional cash.
Digital Photo Frame
While dedicated digital photo frames
have all but gone the way of the dodo
bird, you can turn an old tablet into one
for your desk at work, kitchen counter or
even mounted to a wall in your hallway.
Most tablet operating systems, like
iOS and Android, have integrated photo
gallery apps that can cycle through all of
your photos (and videos) every few
seconds, minutes or hours. You can
store your memories on the phone or
tablet’s internal memory or if you’re
online, link to one of the many free photo
services you can update on the fly.
Android users might opt for the free
Dayframe app, while iPad owners should
consider Digital Photo Frame from Young
Bit Apps, both of which pull images from
social feeds, too, including Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, and others.

Apple Watch Owners,
Check Out These Accessories
By: Marc Saltzman
It’s not enough to be one of the first in the world to own an
Apple Watch (from $449) – many want to accessorize it, too.
According to Slice Intelligence, a research firm that captures
digital commerce data across all devices and categories,
nearly 20 percent of Apple Watch buyers are also
springing for a spare band from Apple.
Watch bands let you customize the timepiece
to match your outfit or mood, including the option
to dress up or down the smartwatch to suit
the occasion.
Of course, bands are just one accessory to
consider. Others add-ons can extend the
functionality and longevity of your investment.
Here’s a look at a five of the more interesting
Apple Watch accessories available now.
Bang On
What’s an ideal way to protect your new
smartwatch? A protective bumper, of course.
ActionProof’s Apple Watch Bumper ($35.00) enjoyed
a successful crowdfunding campaign on the Indiegogo
website, and is now available for purchase. Compatible with the
larger (42mm) Apple Watch, this rubber bumper has been
designed to snugly fit and protect your Apple Watch and make
it action-proof -- hence, the name of the company. While it
offers a 360-degree enclosure, it provides full access to the
buttons, face, sensors, and band. Available in black, white or
orange, this accessory offers torsion and shock resistance; high
resistance to UV radiation, abrasion, chemical aggressions; and
temperature resistance from -40 degrees Fahrenheit to a
maximum of 248 degrees Fahrenheit.
Taking Charge
If you’re on the go and don’t want to worry about plugging the
watch in somewhere to juice up, the Nomad Pod ($59.95) is a
portable battery charger for the Apple Watch, featuring a
1,800-milliamp (mAh) battery. Nomad says this solution can
provide up to four full charges for Apple Watch -- before the
Pod itself needs charging up. Available in silver or space gray
aluminum or black polycarbonate plastic, the Pod powers up
the watch through magnetic induction and a USB port is used
to power up the Pod for when you need it. For $10 more,
Nomad also offers a desktop charger for Apple Watch, aptly
called Stand ($69.95). Ideal for a desk, kitchen countertop
or perhaps a night table, the aluminum-based Stand holds the
magnetic watch charger in a cradle, which could be fed
28
Canadian Wireless Trade Show Magazine
through to the back of the stand
to reduce clutter. You can pick
one up in the colour that matches
your Apple Watch.
I’m with the Band
You received a band with
your Apple Watch – and
perhaps picked up a
spare from Apple when you ordered your watch – but
there are many other bands you can buy to change up
the look of your new gadget. After all, you might want it
to gel with your new outfit, handbag, or special function
you’re attending. Good thing they’re easy to swap in
and out. For about $70 apiece, Casetify offers a number
of bands to choose from (for both the 38mm and 42mm
case), or you can even design your own strap if you’re
not loving any they already offer. Download the iOS or
Android app, design a strap using your own Instagram or
Facebook photos, or select one of the cool designs
created by artists (divided into Collection, Latest and
Popular). Each Casetify strap for Apple Watch lets you
customize the size, and is made from polycarbonate and a
stainless steel buckle enclosure.
To Serve and Protect
You might’ve heard about some scratched Apple Watch
screens already – despite the fact they’re made from strong
Ion-X or Sapphire glass. So why not reduce the odds of this
happening to you with a $6.95 screen protector? Actually, you
get two ArmorSuit MilitaryShield Screen Protectors in the box,
which you apply yourself to the curved watch face – and yes,
there are instructions included, as well. ArmorSuit says small
scratches should fade, as well, thanks the “self-healing”
properties of the military-grade screen protector. Made in the
U.S., there’s a lifetime replacement warranty should anything
happen to the bubble-free transparent material. Interested in
buying one? Be sure to select the right size for your Apple
Watch: 38mm or 42mm.

How to Add More Storage
to ANY Smartphone, Tablet
By: Marc Saltzman
It’s a problem many smartphone and
tablet owners can relate to: running out
of space to hold all your media files.
After all, most devices are limited to
just 16- or 32-gigabytes of internal
storage — hardly enough to hold a lot
of videos, photos, music, podcasts
and ebooks.
Even worse, Apple’s iPhone and
iPad and the new Samsung Galaxy S6
and S6 edge do not support optional
memory cards for extra storage, so
you’re stuck with what you buy.
Oh sure, we’re relying more on
streaming media these days – like Netflix
and Spotify – instead of downloading
files to access offline, but they require
a high-speed connection and use up a
lot of data if you’re not using a free
Wi-Fi network.
Fortunately, there are a number ways
to add more storage to all makes and
models of smartphones and tablets –
and yes, even your mobile devices that
don’t let you add expandable memory.
Here’s a look at a few options.
content onto it via Windows Explorer
(Windows) or Finder (Mac). You can copy
over TV shows, movies, music videos,
songs, audiobooks, photos, documents,
and so on.
When you’re done, unplug it and take
it to go, and now press the silver button
and you can access everything via the
free SanDisk Connect app for iOS and
Android, or any computer’s web browser.
You do not need a wireless network
as the SanDisk drive makes its own
Wi-Fi direct connection, which other
devices join and stream from. Therefore,
this product is ideal for road trips.
Imagine reducing the “Are we there yet?”
from the backseat because kids can
now watch or listen to what they want on
their own device, simultaneously (up to
three for streaming video).
A 32-gigabyte microSD card is
included, but you can swap it out for one
with more memory, if you like. The
regular price for this gadget is $59.99,
but SanDisk’s wireless USB drive
currently on sale for $39.99.
SanDisk Connect Wireless
Flash Drive
About the size of a regular USB
thumbdrive, the SanDisk Connect
Wireless Flash Drive emits a Wi-Fi signal,
allowing up to eight devices to access
content at the same time on the drive –
and password-protected, if desired.
First, snap it into a Windows PC or
Mac’s USB port and drag and drop
Seagate Wireless Plus Hard Drive
Just as the SanDisk Connect Wireless
Flash Drive looks like a regular USB
drive, the Seagate Wireless Plus (from
$158.99 for 1-terabyte) resembles any
external hard drive.
But it, too, can emit a signal to stream
content to seven simultaneous
smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other
Wi-Fi-enabled sources.

After you connect it to the
USB port of a Windows PC or
Mac, and drag and drop
files onto it for safe keeping,
press the button on the side
of the battery-powered hard
drive and it creates a
hotspot you (and others
around you) can join. Setting
up a password is a good
idea, so those near you
can’t access your digital
files without your consent.
This is all handled via the
free Seagate app.
If you’re running out of storage
on your smartphone or tablet, there’s
also an option to wirelessly save
content back to the Wireless Plus,
such as photos and videos captured by
your phone, so you can delete them off
your device to free up more space.
Love this.
WD My Cloud
Western Digital offers a different spin
to expanding storage on your
mobile devices.
Starting at $155.99 (2-terabytes),
WD’s My Cloud is an external desktop
hard drive you keep at home and plugged
into your modem or router. Now, wherever
life takes you around the world, and
regardless of what device you’re using
(phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) you can
access all of your photos, videos, music,
documents and other files.
As the name suggests, consider this
WD product your own personal “cloud”
service -- with no monthly fees. The only
catch is you need an Internet connection
to stream your content, but at least
you can download content to your
device if you know you’re going to be off
the grid for a while, such as on a flight
with no Wi-Fi.

Gap Wireless Closing the Gap
on Non-Line-of-Sight Connectivity
with Tarana Wireless Innovation
Crowded urban skyscapes and dense
residential communities pose one of the
biggest hurdles for carriers providing
fixed broadband communication: the
challenge of Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) in
last-mile networks. Now, the industry is
seeing breakthroughs that enable
wireless backhaul for small cells,
achieving operation at full capacity even
when links are completely obstructed by
buildings, overpasses and vehicles.
Gap Wireless, a leading distributor of
products and services for the mobile
broadband and wireless market, recently
announced it is distributing products
from California-based Tarana Wireless, a
company that has made a fundamental
advance in NLoS connectivity for carrier
deployment.
Tarana’s technology is suitable as an
alternative to fiber for urban and dense
residential fixed broadband, and to solve
challenging capacity issues for mobile
carriers. Benefits delivered by Tarana’s
technology include ubiquitous coverage,
unprecedented capacity and scalability,
simplified deployment, zero-touch
operation, and competitive cost of
ownership. The solutions are designed
for use in applications such as small cell
backhaul, last-mile fiber extension to
enterprises and multi-dwelling units, and
tactical mobile operations.
“We’re pleased to add Tarana to our
slate of exceptional vendors distributed
by Gap Wireless because of their
innovative solutions and ability to enable
ubiquitous wireless coverage,” said Marc
Bouvrette, President, Gap Wireless.
Tarana has combined many antennas,
massive processing power, unique
algorithm innovations, and expert
implementation to create the industry’s
first truly viable wireless alternative to
expensive last-mile fiber. Tarana’s
solution has been proven-in with tier-1
mobile and fixed operator engagements.

serves a diverse range of clients with
advanced Test & Measurement solutions.
The company also provides design and
installation services including advance
testing services. Gap Wireless recently
expanded into a facility with an 11,000
