ABOUT US
The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) is dedicated to
providing children ages four months to five years old with daily
experiences filled with learning, laughter, and love. ECDC is operated by the City of Emeryville to provide families living, going to
school, or working in Emeryville, a safe and caring center for their
children. ECDC is open year round and provides care for over 100
children daily.
The center is staffed by certified, professional teachers who help
children achieve growth in all areas of development. Bi-annual
assessments and monthly observations are completed for parents
to convey the progress of each child in all development areas.Age
appropriate lunch and snacks for all ages are served. The center also
boasts some of the best caregiver to child ratios anywhere in the
Bay Area too. Opportunities abound daily for each child to explore,
create, experiment, and savor the rewards that come with success!

The Center is now open to anyone interested in applying!
Priority will still be given to families that live in Emeryville, work in
Emeryville, have children in the Emery Unified School District, or
live in the 94608 zip code. Verification of residence or employment
is required when enrolling. The Center also participates in a State
subsidized program that allow for families in need to participate.

Are you looking for a safe place to care for your K-8th grade child so
you can make it to work on time? Look no further than the before
school care program offered by the City of Emeryville. For a low
monthly fee, our veteran staff will provide a fun start to the day for
your child starting at 7:30am. Staff will then escort your child to the
Anna Yates Elementary School campus.

ADVENTURE WORKS
(K THROUGH 2ND GRADE)
Adventure Works is a City of Emeryville after school subsidized program offered in conjunction with THE Emery Unified School district
through ASES Grant. This full day extended after school program
provides a warm, nurturing, and fun environment for students in
grades K-2. Our veteran staff maintains a maximum supervision
and program creatively throughout the year, providing structured
activities and supervision including: homework, assistance, science
exploration, gardening, cooperative games, dance, drama, sports,
nutritional snacks and more. In this program, emphasis is placed on
offering the participants more critical thinking exercises and security
in their independence to promote social, emotional, and cognitive
development. Children must register with the Emeryville Community Services Department to participate. Children are escorted by staff

variety of supervised games and activities. This program DOES NOT
supply day care services! This is a drop-in program and children may
choose to arrive and leave at any time.
Registration: Participants may pre-register or participants may
register on a daily basis at the Anna Yates location. Pre-register participants have priority if space is limited. All participants must have
a signed Emergency Contact Form at their site to participate in the
program. Emergency Contact Forms are available on-site and at the
Emeryville Recreation Center.

TEEN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Specifically designed for the developmental, creative and active
needs of young teens in grades 7–9, this program provides the much
needed transition between our after school program and our older
teen “Leaders In Training” job readiness program. The Teen Lounge
includes specially selected theme days with coordinating activities,
weekly special events, and bi-monthly trips. The program offers
activities to help young teens develop both their sense of self and
independence in a safe environment. Activities include a homework
club and tutoring time daily, mentoring program, community service
projects, job shadowing, and health and counseling services/seminars. In addition, we’ll have crafts, cooking activities, games, dances,
movie nights, special guest presentations, field trips and lots of fun!
Our highly trained recreation staff brings a wealth of experience and
enthusiasm to ensure a positive after school adventure. This program
is open to all teens in the greater 94608 zip code. Parents: This is not
a drop-in program; all participants must pre-register and have their
parents’ approval.

CAPOEIRA
Capoeira (capo-AYE-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian
martial art that combines music, dance,
acrobatics and self-defense. Do to it’s African roots, music and songs accompanied
by percussion are an integral part of each
class. Capoeira gives you power, flexibility,
endurance and allows for self-discovery that builds your self-confidence. The challenge is within anyone’s reach regardless of age,
gender or athletic experience. Classes are available for kids ages 5-7
(capo-kids), 7-12 (young warriors) and teens/adults in the regular

CAPO KIDS CLASS
The “Capo-Kids” program is geared towards children ages 5-7.
Children learn basic capoeira movements and music in a fun and
playful environment. The methodology used not only helps them
to develop basic attack and defense skills and increase coordination
of muscle groups, but it will also put them on a path to a mentally
strong and physically active lifestyle.

Kajukenbo Kung Fu is an eclectic, modern
martial art founded in Hawaii in 1947. Kaj created as a new fighting
system that emphasized effective skills for self-defense within the
framework of graceful and powerful movement. The instructors are
Sifu Kate Hobbs (fifth degree black belt in the Gaylord Method of Kaj
Kung Fu) and assisted by third degree black belt Sifu Lynn Keslar and
first degree black belt Sifu Sam Mende-Wong.

Open to family members of all ages, the class structure is built to
support brand new beginners as well as students who have a regular
Kajukenbo practice. The purpose of the class is to introduce families
to Kajukenbo, give them a chance to learn some basic self-defense
skills and offer the whole family a healthy start to their weekend.
The class includes conditioning, rigorous repetition of basic strikes
and blocks, and traditional forms practice. Students are guided
through a vibrant and vigorous warm-up for the first hour, then a
snack and water break, followed by specific Kajukenbo skills training.

Hoop dance is all about fun, fitness, and connecting with others.
Get your hoop on every Monday night, make new friends, and be
a part of the larger hoop community. Whether you’re an experienced hooper looking to practice (and share) moves, or a beginning
hooper wanting a little help with the basics, this event is for you. You
don’t need experience, or even your own hoop to join us! We provide
adult-sized practice hoops for use, and music to get you moving.

business in the 1990s. After earning
her MBA in England in 1998, Lan
relocated to the Bay Area in 1999 as a
business consultant, working closely
with several Fortune 500 companies.
She now works at Edward Jones Investments, helping
individual investors work toward achieving their financial
goals. Lan is active in her community, serving on several
local Advisory Committees and volunteering for several
organizations, including the Emeryville Senior Center.
She also has taken cello lessons and has become a little
league baseball umpire.

This FREE educational course is designed to help individuals learn
more about investment terms and topics, develop a financial strategy, and plan for retirement. This is a very basic, objective, eighthour non-accredited adult education course. You don’t have to be

Art and Museum trips are scheduled to take advantage of the best
and most exciting exhibits in the Bay Area. Trip fees include transportation and excursions are planned that coincide with the museum’s

FRIDAY CLUB
The Friday Club continues to evolve into the “Hot Spot” in Emeryville.
The Friday Club is held every Friday, but once a month the club
enjoys a special line-up. These special days have included gumbo
cook-offs, outdoor picnics, Wii competitions, baking contests, casino
days, and much more.
FRIDAY “NIGHT” CLUB
Get out and enjoy the night life like you used to every Friday night!
Enjoy an evening of socializing with friends, playing the Wii, surfing
the web, playing board games, or just “hanging out”. Free refreshments and dinner options make this a perfect place to kick off the
weekend. Friday Night Club is from 5-8:30pm on the 4th Friday of
each month beginning May 23rd.

The center strives to provide the best entertainment and continues
to offer the most current movies, award-winning series, and documentaries. Movies are shown every Friday at 1:00pm. Our projection
system makes you feel like you are at the movies! While watching the
movie, enjoy popcorn, a drink or other treats courtesy of the center.
Don’t like our selection of movies? Please submit your suggestions
or volunteer to be one of our “Movie Critics” that select the movie
you feel other members would enjoy. Call the office to volunteer for

WHAT IS ‘8-TO-GO’?
The ‘8-To-Go’ is an on-demand shuttle service for everyone ages
60+, or people ages 18-59 who have a disability, living in the 94608
zip code area. Once enrolled in the program, users just place a call
to set-up your travel itinerary and location, it’s that simple! Travel is
limited to locations to and from the 94608 zip code area (which is
all of Emeryville and portions of North and West Oakland including
MacArthur BART, Kaiser, Sutter and more).
WHY SHOULD I USE ‘8-TO-GO’?
This service is intended to help seniors and people with disabilities
travel within the local 94608 area. Whether it’s a trip to the senior
center, grocery store, favorite restaurant, medical appointment, or
religious services, ‘8-To-Go’ will provide the personalized service and
attentiveness not found in other transportation services.

The center offers a hot pre-packaged meal daily in our main auditorium. The meals are provided by Nutrition Solutions focusing on using
low fat and sodium ingredients. This is a self serve lunch which runs
Monday–Friday, 11:45am-12:15pm. Suggested Donation for the meal
is $3.00 for adults 60 years and over and $5.00 if under 60. You must
fill out an application form to participate in addition to the Senior
Center Membership form.

to host your next baby shower,

The City of Emeryville has four indoor facilities that
are available to reserve exclusively for your special
occasion, gathering, or event:
The Bridgecourt Room
Located at 3990 Harlan Street, is perfect for hosting a board
meeting, a small gathering, or even an instructional class.
The Bridgecourt Room has an urban loft vibe with amenities
that include; a seating capacity of up to 40 people, a wet bar/
kitchen area, bathroom, and free Wi-Fi. This room also comes
equipped with a projection screen and tables/chairs.
Emeryville Senior Center has a wonderful art deco design
from the 1930’s that makes it an ideal venue for private
parties, receptions, weddings and community functions. Our
main hall has vaulted ceilings, hardwood flooring and can
host up to 250 people. The Senior Center comes equipped
with a stage, P.A. and sound system, tables and chairs and
much more. If our main hall is too large for your event, our
upstairs room is perfect for hosting smaller functions. Any
room in the center is even available for weekday evening
and weekend rentals!
Emeryville Child Development Center
Looking for a safe, fun, and very family-friendly facility? The
Emeryville Child Development Center, located at 1220
53rd Street, is the perfect location! You will have access to
an industrial sized catering kitchen, a 100-person capacity
multi-purpose room with a connected outdoor courtyard and
a brand new, secure tot lot with playground. You can’t find a
better location than this kid-friendly and safe environment.
Recreation Center
The newly constructed Recreation Center, located at 4300 San
Pablo Avenue, is perfect for children’s birthday parties, trainings with break out rooms, meetings, and any type of shower.
The Rec is equipped with projector and projector screens as
well as TV’s in every room! With six conference style rooms for
break out sessions, the Recreation Center can hold up to 100
seated guests in its largest room.

the Senior Center?
Why should I pre-register for activities?
Almost all activities require pre-registration. Without pre-registration,
our staff will not be able to have the correct supervision or supplies
to make sure you have a great experience. Note: A few of our community/special events and senior activities do not require pre-registration. These will be noted in the activity/event description.
There are four (4) ways to register for activities/events in
Emeryville:
ON-LINE
Please visit www.emeryville.org/activenet to register for almost any
program! ActiveNet requires immediate payment, so make sure to
have your debit/credit card or electronic check handy. Avoid wasting
gas, paper, and time waiting in line…register online today!
WALK-IN
Register in-person weekdays at the Recreation Center (9:00am6:00pm) or Veteran’s Memorial/Senior Center (9:00am-5:00pm) for
almost every activity and event. Be sure to bring your checkbook or
credit/debit card too, fees are due in full to register for a program.

How do I register for youth, adult, and
senior activities/events?
Membership is only $10 for residents, $20 for non-residents, and

How do I register for infant and
toddler/child development center
activities?
The Emeryville Child Development Center (ECDC) only accepts walkin registrations due to eligibility constraints. Eligibility for enrollment
into ECDC programs is limited to families who live in Emeryville,
work in Emeryville, or live with the 94608 zip code area of Oakland.
Be prepared to fill out an application form when you visit and sign
up for the monthly tour of the programs and facility. Please call the
ECDC with any questions at 510-596-4343.
Why was the activity canceled or
rescheduled?
Due to low enrollment, instructor emergencies, weather conditions,
or many other reasons, a class may be cancelled or rescheduled
at any time. Staff attempts to limit these occurrences, but they are
bound to happen. If an activity is cancelled or rescheduled, you will
have the opportunity to join a rescheduled activity, join a different
activity, or receive a full refund. Please allow four to six weeks for
cash or check refunds to be processed. We sincerely apologize in
advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

ACCESSIBILITY GRANTS FOR RENTERS & HOMEOWNERS
The City of Emeryville offers Accessibility Grants to residences occupied by disabled low income owners and
tenants who require accessibility modifications. The maximum grant amount is $10,000 for qualified households. The work performed includes only those items necessary to ensure accessibility to the residence. Rental
owners must agree to any modifications for their tenants and agree to continue to rent the unit at affordable
levels. The applicants’ household income must not exceed low income limits as defined by the U.S. Department

The City of Emeryville has two down payment assistance programs to assist income-eligible, first-time homebuyers to purchase
market-rate units in Emeryville through “silent” second mortgages. These low-interest, deferred-payment second mortgages can be
used to reduce the amount needed to borrow from a primary mortgage lender, reducing monthly mortgage costs.
The two programs are CalHome, available to low-income or below households, and the First Time Homebuyer Loan (FTHB) program,

Emeryville’s Coastal Clean Up
is Saturday, September 20th,
9:00am-12noon
An astounding 648,015 volunteers in 92 countries picked up more than 12.3 million pounds
of trash in the 2013 International Coastal Cleanup. Join your community on Saturday, September 21st at 9:00am to help keep the Emeryville shoreline free and clear of debris.
The clean up will be headquartered at 2333 Powell Street (next to the Fire Station) and lasts until about noon. Local Emeryville businesses
support us every year by donating great refreshments and raffle prizes for volunteers.
Help minimize our event waste too! Bring your own re-usable collection bags or buckets, gloves and filled refillable water bottles, and coffee
mugs. Wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a hat (and be prepared for changing weather on the shore). If you have one, bring a garden cultivator

Temescal Creek Community Garden Now
Operating at 1042 48th Street, Emeryville, CA
In 2008, the Emeryville Redevelopment Agency acquired a small residential parcel at 1042 48th Street right on the Emeryville/
Oakland border. The site was planned for the “48th Street Community Garden” but development was delayed by the elimination of the Emeryville Redevelopment Agency in 2011. Despite this delay remediation and backfill of the site was completed
in 2012 and property issues were addressed in 2013. Finally this year the former agency funding was dedicated to the site for
the construction of the garden. In May, contractors provided water service and improved sidewalk access to the site. This summer contractors built the fence and a beautiful custom gate adorning the front of the garden. With more than 20 new beds
including ADA accessible sites, the garden has state of the art irrigation, compost, and a rain barrel plus an ADA accessible tool
shed. It has been a long time coming, making the fruit all the more sweet !
Emeryville Community Organic Gardens (ECOG, operators of the Doyle Street and Big Daddy Gardens) managed the garden’s
development and are managing the garden operations. They christened it Temescal Creek Garden upon construction noting
the fact that 48th street runs both north/south and east west can be quite disorienting to those navigating to the garden
(found directly west of Temescal Creek Park – following the creek’s original alignment). ECOG partnered with Star Apple, a
landscape design-build firm known for work at the City Slickers Farm in West Oakland and work with Richmond schools for the
site development. Look for community announcements celebrating the opening of this new delightful garden spot.

Update on Development Proposals
CHRISTIE PARK EXPANSION
The Planning Commission held a study session on plans for an expansion of the Christie Avenue
Park at 5959 Shellmound Street in July. Expansion of Christie Park is part of the Marketplace
Planned Unit Development, which includes a grocery store and other retail on the former United
Theater site and Public Market parking lot.
HYATT PLACE HOTEL AT BAY STREET
The Planning Commission unanimously approved a six story, 171-room Hyatt Place hotel to be
constructed on an unbuilt portion of Bay Street Site A at 5700 Bay Street, north of the existing Bay
Street Center. The Commission modified and added several conditions of approval related to design
and transportation.
3900 ADELINE RESIDENTIAL PROJECT
The Building Division is currently processing a building permit application for 4-story residential
development on Adeline Street between 39th Street and Yerba Buena Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in late summer. The new building will be grouped around a podium-style plaza and
will accommodate 101 units of housing situated over a parking structure and café.
3706 SAN PABLO AVENUE (STAR INTERSECTION)
The trucks at 3706 San Pablo Avenue will first be staging construction for the adjacent Public Work’s
project at the Star Intersection ,including pedestrian and cyclist crossing improvements (funded
by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission under Regional Measure 2) then contaminated
soils will be removed and trucked to off-site landfills to prepare the site for an 86 unit affordable
housing project.
THE INTERSECTION APARTMENTS ON “MAZ” SITE
The Planning Commission approved a proposal to reuse an existing 25,000 square foot building for
commercial uses and to construct a new 105-unit rental apartment building and parking structure
on the existing surface parking lot, on the site of the “Maz” building AT 3800 San Pablo Avenue.
Construction is expected to begin in late summer.
NEW SHELL STATION TO INCLUDE A CONVENIENCE STORE
You may have noticed activity at the northwest corner of Frontage Road and Powell Street. The old
Shell gas station has been removed, making way for an updated Shell gas station that will include a
new 2,500 square foot convenience store, ten pumping stations, a car wash, and new landscaping.
Additionally, the new gas station will provide amenities for bicyclists and pedestrians: the corner
area will feature wide sidewalks, a bench, a bike fix-it station and a Bay Trail information kiosk. Once
completed, these new features will help serve Bay Trail users coming and going from Emeryville!

approved to relocate to 3986 Adeline
Street, the former location of Cafe Biere.
They have applied for permits to install
a sidewalk café and Emeryville’s first
bike corral. Bike corrals are on-street
bicycle racks placed in the parking lane
on the roadway. Approximately 8-12
bikes can be parked in one car space.

New ‘Skate Spot’ Coming to Emeryville
in 2015
Work is slated to begin late 2014 on a new skate spot behind (west of ) the shopping center on San Pablo Avenue between
Park Avenue and 45th Street (ie: Joseph Emery Park). The project will be funded by the East Bay Regional Park District’s
Measure WW bond funds and the Tony Hawk Foundation (which awarded the City a $10,000 grant towards the construction
of the project). The skate park was greatly influenced and designed by the local skate boarders in Emeryville and nearby
Oakland, so a big thanks for those who care out to design your own park! You can view the Joseph Emery Park Skate Spot

Prevent Identity Theft in E’ville
Identity theft is on the rise and with the large amount of retail stores in Emeryville, thieves
come from far and wide to commit fraud thefts in our own backyard. Here are a few tips to
help you avoid being a victim:
• Shred Everything: Bills, credit card statements or even credit card applications are ripe for ID theives
• Online Bank: Start to use online banking and bill pay as much as you can. There are no papers to lose or
for anyone to steal from the mail. Yes, e-banking can be scary for some but your money is insured and the
likelihood of your account being hacked is less than you think.
•Anti-Spyware: CNET, a local company, offers reviews on many different protection software. The professionals grade them and there is also user reviews. Don’t skimp on a good software.
•One Card: If you carry many cards and your purse/wallet are stolen, you run the risk of a lengthy and
costly ID theft. Keep a backup card at home in a secure place such as a safe.
•Keep Private Info Private: Be wary of any emails (or phone calls) that ask for your personal information,
especially your birth date, social security # and place of birth. No credible company will ask you to provide
this online.
•Buy with Trusted Stores: Don’t purchase anything online from an unknown website or one without
“https” in the website. If the deal you found sounds too good to be true, it is.
•Strong Passwords: Make all passwords a combination of letters, numbers and characters. If you know
obscure words in another language, use it and replace letters with numbers. For example, the number 1 can
also be the letter I.

This Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) is a free, one and
a half hour class based on the same curriculum as the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program that class covers all the
important skills without the long-term commitment. The skills
covered include home disaster preparation, utility control, fire
safety, hazardous material awareness, and Weapons of Mass
Destruction (WMD) awareness.
