Course Objectives
This course is a course of language; nevertheless the main aim of the course is to present the
two most famous contemporary Spanish painters (Picasso and Dalí) in the context of art
(Cubism and Surrealism) interacting with war (Spanish Civil War and Second World War),
and secondly some of the latest Spanish artistic manifestations of film, painting, sculpture,
architecture and urbanism.

Course description
The course will consist in four lessons given by the teacher helped with audiovisual aid. In the
first two lessons the student will be introduced in the “-isms”: Cubism, Expressionism,
Surrealism, Dadaism, etc. Also a special study will be made on one of the most representative
paintings of the 20th century: the Guernica of Picasso. The second part of the semester will
focus on the irruption of the new images coming from the “Movida Madrileña” (we will study
Almodóvar as filmmaker), and of the technology in architecture (Calatrava) and on the need
of reshape old urban models, like in the case of Bilbao.
The student will be introduced in concepts of Contemporary Art, to be able to deal with
two short oral presentations. The first presentation will be one, or few related painting of
Picasso or Dalí using the terms and method learned in class. In the second presentation the
student will introduce a modern artistic work of Taiwan, preferable a representative building
or a urban sculpture, applying everything learned in the course.

Requirements
To have studied at least Spanish II in NTU, or to have a good command of Spanish similar to
the level B1 of the European Common Frame of Reference, regardless how it was acquired.
Although the course is a natural transition from the course Spanish Contemporary Culture (I),
it is not necessarily to have study this course to join the present one.

Textbook and References
The main material will be given by the teacher. It is a fully illustrated dossier titled Cultura
Contemporánea Española (II). This material is updated every year and it is complemented in
class with PowerPoint presentations.
