WHAT: We will be making spring decorations for your yard or home during this crafting session. PATT and the CRHSAP program will provide everything you need. Come prepared to put your personal touch on your own projects. This is a wonderful opportunity to hang-out with your daughters and get to know some of the other young women and ladies in our program. Daughters must have their moms with them. Also, mothers who only have sons are welcome to join us. WHEN: Thurs., April 9th from 6:00PM – 8:00PM WHERE: CRHSAP Art Room 5 or more families are needed to hold this session RSVP via the online link included in this email Pathways to Poetry Family Class Taught by: Miss Laura Open to K-5 Students with their Parent(s) Thurs. afternoons, 1:00-2:00PM OR 2:15-3:15PM during the month of April (4/2, 4/9, 4/16, 4/23 only) This family class will involve the reading & writing of poetry. During many of the activities, moms and/or dads will be reading and writing right alongside their children. Come and explore the world of poetry as we read poems from Emily Dickinson, Shel Silverstein, and Jack Prelutsky. Through our writing activities, we will learn about similes, metaphors, alliteration, and numerous other poetry devices. Our goal will be to have each student submit a poem for our HSAP Writing Anthology. The link is located in the email in which this newsletter was sent. Spring Music Program & HSAP’s Got Talent! What: Spring Program/Talent Show Where: Wilson Middle School Auditorium When: Rehearsal is on May 5th at 3:30PM for K-5 music class students and 4:30PM for talent acts. The show is on May 7th at 7:00PM (students should arrive no later than 6:45PM. Who: All K-5 music students will share some of their songs. Students who would like to share a talent. Why: We want to share what we are learning! Note: It is very important to RSVP for the K-5 music class program. We have vocal, instrumental, and dialogue parts to give to participating students. Note: It is important for students who want to share a talent to sign up, give the name of the piece they will share or perform, and supply a background CD if needed. Wall O’ Jaws Friday, April 10th at 1:30PM OR 2:30PM Gentle Dental, 1515 Blairs Ferry Road NE Join us at either 1:30PM or 2:30PM to view the one-of -a-kind, jaw dropping, educational display for all ages which awaits you at Gentle Dental. With over 50 skulls of animals from around the world, Wall O’ Jaws will take you on a learning adventure about animals and their teeth. There are jaws from every continent, from alligator to great white shark to wombat. We will also learn what goes on in a dental office and get some tips on good dental hygiene. Note: We are limited to about 15 people per tour, so RSVP early. This opportunity is free. RSVP via the online link included in the email. Save the Date Our spring family picnic will be on Fri, 5/15th at Bever Park 2 3 Robotic Summer Camp Linn-Mar High School June 8-12, 2015 Students entering Grades 4-6 and Parents $100 per student Parents are free with the commitment to teach students in the afternoon The main goals of this unique camp experience are two-fold. 1) To provide programming and robotic training to adults interested in becoming mentors or coaches to a First Lego League (FLL) Club in the future. 2) To introduce students to the basics of building a NXT Robot and learning to program it with Lego Mindstorm software. Parents will receive ‘programming’ and ‘robot build’ training in the morning and teach students these skills in the afternoon. Deadline to have your online application process completed is April 3, 2015 Programming Club (FTC off-season) For Middle and High School Students Mondays, March 30-May 4, 2015 3:30PM-5:00PM Wilson Middle School, Room #123 This is a 6-session ‘crash course’ on programing with Lab View software. Participants will be assigned an NXT robot and asked to program it to accomplish various missions. Newbies or experienced programmers will be taken to the next level. Need more information? We will have a naturalist lead us as we look for signs of spring in the wetland, woodlands, prairies, and savanna. After the program, you will have time to explore the beautiful recently remodeled learning center where you can see things from a bug’s point of view or hike independently on the miles of trails. Families enjoyed activities and learned about resources. An educational outreach specialist will be holding additional sessions to dive into resources and demonstrate how to use them to enrich learning at home. Home School Roller Skating The next home school roller skating at Super Skate, located at 5100 Northland Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids, will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015, 1:00PM-3:00PM. Ushers Ferry Home School Day (Ages 7-11) Thursday, April 23, 2015, 9:30AM-1:30PM. The cost for Cedar Rapids residents is $8.25/student. The cost for all others is $9.25/student. Take a field trip just for homeschoolers in grades 2-5 to Ushers Ferry! Before arriving for your tour, download the student orientation materials at www.UFHV.com and pick a character to research and play in the one-room school house. Spend half a day in the school house studying and learning just as country school students would have in 1910.
