Situation Overview
Introduction:
On Saturday April 25th, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Lamjung District of Nepal, and
over 21 aftershocks have also struck the region including a 5.2 in the mountains causing a
landslide. It was the biggest earthquake to strike the country in 80 years. The earthquake was felt
across the region from India to China and left immense destruction, flattening sections of
Kathmandu and triggering avalanches in mount Everest.
Initial government reports confirm that 30 out of 75 districts in the country have been affected in
the Western and Central Regions, including Kathmandu Valley districts. This includes mountain
and hilly areas, in areas where rural populations are dispersed, as well as some very densely
populated districts and Nepal’s two largest cities – greater Kathmandu and Pokhara. The worst
affected districts include Sindupalchowk, Kavre, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dolakha in the CR and Kaski,
Gorkha, Lamjung in the western region. (source) As of April 27, the Ministry of Affairs estimates

Background:
Kathmandu is the capital and largest metropolitan city of Nepal. The city is the urban core of the
Kathmandu Valley in the Himalayas, which also contains two sister cities namely Patan or
Lalitpur, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to its southeast and Bhaktapur, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) to its east. It
is also acronymed as 'KTM'. The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres
(4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped valley in central Nepal surrounded by four major mountains,
namely: Shivapuri, Phulchowki, Nagarjun and Chandragiri.

On 26 April, the Government Requested international assistance, including -Search and
Rescue capacity, particularly for the Kathmandu Valley where larger buildings have
collapsed;

- Heavy equipment for rubble removal;

earthquake. They were above the devastation in Langtang Village at the time of the
quake, and are now working to help refugees coming up from that area. Please

wife, Kathleen. "Kat called again to share the names of new people coming to the
camp. Avalanches have buried Langtang Village, and survivors are starting to
come up the mountain to Kyanjin Gompa. Many are badly wounded. Brigida is a
nurse, but she is the only medical person on hand and she is overwhelmed."

Tahanu District

Mt. Everest and Himalayas
o Apr27 Lukla Airport (coordinates 27.687778, 86.731389) update - Airport in Lukla
is open, but flights are subject to weather. Flights include transport by helicopter
and plane. There is a waiting list for injured hikers, non-injured hikers are
requested to stand-by until all the injured are removed. There are many people
(unconfirmed reports >1000) waiting for flights. A priority has been placed on
airlifting injured first. Eye witness reports indicate active flights are only a few each
day (unconfirmed).
o The airport's paved asphalt runway is accessible only to helicopters and small,
fixed-wing, short-takeoff-and-landing aircraft. The runway is 527 m (1,729 ft) × 30
m (98 ft) with a 11.7% gradient. The airport's elevation is 9,334 ft (2,845 m)t

MEDICAL SITUATION OVERVIEW  Management of casualties and injuries remains the most pressing need in Kathmandu.
Hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties, and injuries from collapsed buildings. Doctors
are reported to be treating people in the streets.
 Urgent needs include the provision of essential medicines and medical supplies, surgical
equipment and instruments, mental health care, psycho social support and management
of trauma caused by the tragedy. (Source)

of help. 223 people had been confirmed dead in the district; thousands are injured. Many
villages remained isolated. In those villages that have been reached, the immediate needs
are great including the need for search and rescue, food items, blankets and tarps, and

The morgues and cremation sites are getting full. Families lit funeral pyres in towns and
across the countryside. The Pashupati area has 12 permanent ghats (podium for
cremation). Another 16 temporary ghats were created at the bank near the Tilganga
bridge at the side of Pashupatinath Temple. In response to shortage of timber, the Timber
Corporation of Nepal is preparing to stock wood that is enough for cremating 2000 bodies.

WHO is surging additional medical supplies and health workers into the affected region. at
least 20 foreign medical teams (FMT) have offered support to the country and registered
with WHO. The first teams are expected to arrive in Kathmandu tonight. (Source)

village. Also I can't contact anyone, network is really bad. Embassy numbers not
reachable. Battery is going to die soon. Please try to help. People are homeless,
no food, all houses are destroyed, many are hurt badly, some people died in front

northern part of the Gorkha district. It is located about 1900 m above sea level.
Report of all but 4 of the 1200 houses destroyed. Village has been reached by

medical help. Areas are inaccessible due to destroyed roads. Several villages on
hills completely fell off. Villagers are stranded and need medical help, food, water,

rescue operations. Entire villages have been damaged. These places...need

In general: Relief agencies and officials said most hospitals were overflowing and short on
medical supplies. "Both private and government hospitals have run out of space and are
treating patients outside, in the open". (source)
In Kathmandu: "Grande International is badly cracked and all the patients have been
evacuated,” she said. “Another hospital, Norvick, has also been badly damaged. They're
seeing patients outside across the road. The main hospital, which is called Teaching
Hospital, is fully functioning. All the new buildings downtown are OK." (source) Kathmandu
