We welcome all visitors and pray that our worship will provide an opportunity for you to experience God’s
love. We invite you to return and share in our mission and ministry for our Savior.
Attendance Registration Books:
Please fill out the attendance registration book found in the hymnal holders on the backs of the pews and
chairs. Print neatly using complete name and address. Pass it down your row; after everyone has filled it
out, return it to the center isle to be collected by the ushers.
Holy Communion:
We proclaim that the body and blood of Christ are present with the bread and wine in the Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins and recommitment of our lives. Those able to examine themselves,
accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament
are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM).
If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The
individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white
grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you
would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher.
Nursery and Infant Care Rooms:
Nursery care is available for children under four years of age from 8:15am – 12:15pm on first floor; take
south elevator from narthex to first floor. The Infant Care Room with a changing table and rocker is located in Classroom 13 on the sanctuary level (second floor). Additional changing tables are available on the
sanctuary level in the family and men’s restrooms, in the women’s restroom located across the hall from
the Nursery in the lower level, and women’s restroom on the same floor as the Activity Center.
Sunday School:
Visitors: If you are visiting today and your child would like to attend Sunday school, please bring the child
to Rooms 14 and 15, east of the sanctuary where they will be directed to the appropriate classroom.
Fellowship Between Services:
Please join us for refreshments and socializing in the Activity Center. Thank you!
Special Needs:
Visual: Large print service folders services are available.
Worship service folders are available in Braille upon request.
Hearing: Hand held amplification receivers with ear pieces are available at the usher's table. Deaf and
Hard of Hearing attendees of the early service are encouraged to follow the American Sign Language
(ASL) translation of the liturgy as provided by volunteers of the parish's Deaf Ministry.
Mobility: Spaces in the center aisle next to the short pews in the sanctuary are reserved for wheelchairs,
scooters and seated walkers. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. One is
located on first floor of the west accessible entrance near the elevator; the second is located in the coat rack
of the narthex near the sanctuary.

INTRODUCTION
On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and in whom the people
of God are created and re-created. Pentecost is sometimes called the church's birthday, but
might more appropriately be called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness
of baptism. Ezekiel's vision shows the Spirit resurrecting and re-creating not just individuals
but a whole people. Romans makes it clear that God is in the process of re-creating the
entire cosmos; yet the Spirit is also at work in the most intimate and personal way, praying in
us "with sighs too deep for words" when we do not know how to pray.
Nicolaus Copernicus, died 1543; Leonhard Euler, died 1783; scientists
These two men were both scientists who helped to explain the wonders of God's universe.
Copernicus is best known for promoting the idea that the sun, not the earth, is at the center
of our solar system. Euler was one of the founders of pure mathematics, and contributed to
many other fields.

Originally Pentecost was a Jewish thanksgiving-type festival celebrated seven weeks after Passover. On
this particular Pentecost, however, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon the entire community of believers just
as Jesus had promised and the scriptures had prophesied. Empowered by the Spirit, the entire community
bears witness to God's activity in multiple languages.

SECOND READING—Romans 8:22-27
By pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts, God gives us the promised first fruit of eternal life so that we
await God's future in hope. In the meantime, the Spirit also intercedes for us by carrying the prayers of our
weak human hearts to God.
We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only
the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while
we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope
that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not
see, we wait for it with patience.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we
ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches
the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints
according to the will of God.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
May 24—Nicolaus Copernicus, died 1543; Leonhard Euler, died 1783; scientists
Remembering scientists such as Copernicus and Euler offers an
opportunity to ponder the mysteries of the universe and the grandeur of God’s creation. Copernicus is an example of a renaissance
person. He formally studied astronomy,
mathematics, Greek, Plato, law, medicine,
and canon law. He also had interests in theology, poetry, and the natural and social
sciences. Copernicus is chiefly remembered
for his work as an astronomer and his idea
that the sun, not the earth, is the center of the
solar system.
Euler (OY-ler) is regarded as one of the founders of the science
of pure mathematics and made important contributions to mechanics,
hydrodynamics, astronomy, optics, and acoustics.
May 27—John Calvin, renewer of the church, died 1564
John Calvin began his studies in theology at the University of
Paris when he was fourteen. In his mid-twenties he experienced
a conversion that led him to embrace the views of the Reformation. His theological ideas are systematically laid out in his
Institutes of the Christian Religion. He is also well known for his
commentaries on scripture. He was a preacher in Geneva, was
banished once, and then later returned to reform the city under
a theocratic constitution.
May 29— Jiřī Tranovsky, hymnwriter, died 1637
Jiřī Tranovsky (YEAR-zhee truh-NOF-skee) is considered
the “Luther of the Slavs” and the father of Slovak hymnody.
Trained at the University of Wittenberg in the early
seventeenth century, Tranovsky was ordained in 1616 and
spent his life preaching and teaching in Prague, Silesia, and
finally Slovakia. He produced a translation of the Augsburg
confession and published his hymn collection Cithara
Sanctorum (Lyre of the Saints), the foundation of Slovak
Lutheran hymnody.

PARISH NOTES AND NEWS
WE WELCOME TO IMMANUEL Rev. Dave Andrus. Rev. Andrus served as a parish pastor in the
St. Louis area for 13 years. He then served as director of Lutheran Blind Mission for 15 years. Rev.
Andrus then helped unify this organization with Lutheran Braille workers and then stepped away. As
he waits to see what the next chapter of life holds, he helps out a small congregation on weekends in
the inner city of St. Louis. He also is a domestic dad; cooking, cleaning and whatever else the family
needs. He is married to Debb who works for Concordia Publishing House and has two teenaged girls:
Tori and Meg.
PASTOR RANDY will be out of the office through May 28. During PR’s absence, please forward
pastoral emergencies to Rev. Robert Leiste, 766-8447 (cell). Please use your assigned elder for any
other concerns. PR will return to the office on Friday, May 29.
PRINTED COPIES Pastor Randy’s sermons for the past month are available for your taking. They

PENTECOST OFFERING: The offerings received in the special Pentecost Offering Envelope have
been designated for the Guinea, West Africa mission, which the Kansas District has supported since
1997. Specifically, the offering will support the Medical Clinic in Siguiri, providing furnishings and
supplies. Funds are also needed to complete renovations on the clinic, as well as financial support
for staff and training. Thank you for your consideration. May the Lord bless our offerings.

OUR NEXT FIFTH-SUNDAY DINNER IS MAY 31, NEXT SUNDAY! There will be one
worship service at 9:30am and no Bible study or Sunday School. At 11:00am, there will be a
congregational potluck dinner. Please plan on attending. To help with planning, it would be good if
individuals would be willing to bring food according to the following assignments. We will have the
ovens turned on the 250 degrees to keep food warm during the service. There will be plenty of

YOUNG FAMILIES SOCIAL GATHERING: We will have a fun social gathering on June 7th at
5:00pm at the Overlook Park just North of Clinton Lake (take Clinton Pkwy West, turn right at the
"T" intersection North of the dam, then take your first left). We have a shelter reserved right by the
playground for the kids to play. Bring a entree and side dish to share for our picnic pot luck and
drinks for your own family. If you haven't had a chance to join us for a gathering, this is a great time
to come and fellowship with our great group of families! If you have any questions feel free to email

IMMANUEL'S NEXT MEN'S CLUB EVENT will be open to ALL parishioners (male and female)
and, for June only, will deviate from its customary date, time, and location. The Deaf Ministry
invites you to come learn about a world within a world, to experience what it’s like to live in a world
where there is a “Different Way to Hear.” (How would a doorbell, an alarm clock, or a telephone
have to work if you couldn't hear them?)
You will be taking a FREE "field trip" to tour the Deaf Cultural Center (DCC) and William J. Marra
Museum (www.deafculturalcenter.org), 455 E Park St in Olathe, across from the Kansas School for
the Deaf. Free parking is available in the lot just south of the DCC off S State St. This will take
place on the 2nd Monday (June 8, instead of the usual 3rd Monday). Carpools will be arranged and

SPECIAL AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE If you wanted give blood but missed the
May 21st ARC blood drive, here’s another chance. A special blood drive will be held on Wed nesday, June 10, from 2pm to 6pm in the activity center. Thank you in advance for giving “the gift
of life.”
THE RELAY FOR LIFE OF DOUGLAS COUNTY ON FRIDAY, JUNE 12 TH will be held at
the Free State High School track, 4800 Overland Drive in Lawrence. This free event is a major
fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Everyone is invited to attend any or all of the event, to
honor cancer survivors and remember those lost. Activities, music, food vendors, and a silent
auction begin at 5:00 p.m. The official opening ceremony begins at 7:00 which includes a survivor
lap around the track, and a caregiver lap. At 9:15 p.m. the luminaria ceremony begins, when
thousands of candles will be lighted for the all-night glow to honor and remember individuals. You
may make a contribution or purchase luminaria at the event. Many individuals will continue to
walk around the track until dawn, to signify that cancer never sleeps. For more information, please

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Thanks to the congregation’s generosity, Immanuel contributed
$1,000 to Lawrence Habitat for Humanity’s 2015 Building on Faith (BOF) project. Praise God! But
Habitat needs more before it launches its “Nail Drive” in July. So, if you meant to donate last month
and forgot, or if you would like to give more, it is not too late. Please use our special offering
envelops (just write “for Habitat” on the outside) or the Lawrence Habitat for Humanity envelops

STEWARDSHIP SENTENCE – Acts 2:1 “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all
together in one place.” Pentecost was the Old Testament harvest festival: a time of thanksgiving,
bounty, and the giving of gifts. How appropriate that in the New Testament it takes on the meaning
of harvest the ripe fields of the nations, bringing in the elect of every tribe and tongue to sing the
Lord’s praise. Every farmer knows that it is God who gives the increase, that harvest calls for
thanksgiving.
