WELCOME/ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRELUDE
CALL TO WORSHIP
Psalm 99
One: You are the Lord; let the peoples tremble! You sit enthroned upon the
cherubim; let the earth quake!
All:
You are exalted over all the peoples. Hear us as we praise your great
and awesome name. You indeed are holy
One: Lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
All:
We will extol you, O Lord our God, and worship at your footstool.
One: Let us worship God!
OPENING PRAYER
All of our lives are full of your mercy, O God; wherever we turn you are sure to be
there. If we are found in the depths of depression, you lift up our spirits with the
hope of new life. When we bound to the heights of ecstasy, you rejoice with us
and make our feet light. You surround us with your Spirit who knows our needs
before we announce them. We give you all praise, O God of all life. Amen.
*HYMN #138
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
NICEA
CALL TO CONFESSION
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not within
us. In confession we acknowledge our brokenness and our need for God who is
faithful, just, loving and forgiving. In humility and in faith let us confess our
condition to God by praying together...
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Lover of justice, distinctions becomes blurred when we are called on to serve
you. We have been taught that to serve you is to obey you. At times fidelity to
others gets in our way. Societal pressures appeal to that sense of security that
speaks to our welfare. Mores and customs become mandates; higher loyalties
are put aside. We confess our mixed allegiance. Have mercy upon us as we face
obligations, and reclaim us from error when we obey not your will.
(Time of Silent Personal Confession)
THE KYRIE
Kyrie Eleison
Lord, have mercy upon us, Christ, have mercy upon us, Lord, have mercy upon us.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Remember the words of the prophet Jeremiah when he wrote: “Behold, the
days are coming, says the Lord, when … I will put my law within them, and I will
write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people …
for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” Therein
lies our assurance. Amen.
*GREETINGS AND SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST
Since God has affirmed us in Jesus Christ, we have also been made brothers and
sisters, then let us joyfully welcome one another for we are in our Lord’s house.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you.
*GLORIA PATRI #579
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us
not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the
power and the glory forever. Amen.
THE GIFT OF THE WORD
GATHERING SONG
Jesus Loves Me

Exodus 33:12-23 (p.80) and Matthew 22:15-22 (p.24)
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
ANTHEM
Recitative and aria from Judas Maccabaeus
HANDEL
Thom Dreeze, baritone soloist
I feel, I feel the deity within,
Who, the bright cherubim between,
His radiant
glory erst display'd;
To Israel's distressful pray'r
He hath vouchsafe'd a gracious
ear,
And points out Maccabaeus to their aid:
Judas shall set the captive
free,
And lead us all to victory.
Arm, arm, ye brave! A noble cause, The cause of Heav'n your zeal demands.
In
defence of your nation, religion, and laws, The Almighty Jehovah will strengthen
your hands.
SERMON
“Learning to Recognize”
Rev. Abby King-Kaiser
THE RESPONSE TO THE WORD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed (Ecumenical)
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in
Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he
rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of
sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
*HYMN #302
I Danced in the Morning
SIMPLE GIFTS
PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS
In response to the love of God in Jesus Christ, let us return the offerings of our
life and the gifts of the earth. Give as you have made up your heart, mind, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, but to the glory of God.
Please put the completed friendship sheet in the offering plate
during the offering portion of the service.
OFFERTORY
O Lord on High
Thom Dreeze, baritone soloist
MOZART
O Lord on high we pray Thee guide us and keep our souls in Thine own care.
When dark our way with light provide us; teach us Thy righteousness to share.
Lead Thou us on through dangers lowering, be Thou our shield in fears o’er powering.
Oh, let Thy mercy, e’er be our guard, over our lives keep watch and ward.
*DOXOLOGY #592
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*OFFERTORY PRAYER
O God, we hear about the cost of discipleship. Nothing less than our whole life
is required. We dedicate these gifts in response to Christ’s call, and offer
ourselves in full commitment. Take us and mold us according to his will. We
pray that who we are may be acceptable, what we do may find favor, and that
which we give will reflect your love. Amen.
*HYMN #263
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
*BLESSING AND BENEDICTION

Sue Imm
This morning we welcome the Reverend Abby King-Kaiser. Abby is the Assistant
Director for Ecumenical and Multifaith ministry at the Dorothy Day Center for Faith
and Justice. After attending Miami University (Ohio) as an undergraduate, she
received a Masters of Divinity from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA.
She served as the pastor of a small, urban congregation in Oakland, CA before
moving back to her hometown to work at Xavier. She is delighted that her role at
Xavier allows her to work with and learn from students from a wide variety of
traditions and backgrounds. She is working on creating more spaces on campus
where they can intentionally build community across difference.

GROWING BOLDER: Nov. 12th 11am-1pm Kemper Room. Are you dreading
downsizing? Are you wondering if the time is right? Do you just want to get more

to purge without pain. Come with your questions and we will have a great
discussion. We will be serving a simple lunch of salad, soup and bread. Please RSVP
631-9707 ext 103 so we have enough for everyone!
MONTHLY COMMUNION: We are looking for more volunteers with serving
communion on the first Sunday of each month. Anyone who has been ordained
either a Deacon or an Elder is eligible to serve. Communion has been served by
intinction because it requires fewer volunteers, but would like to begin serving in
the pews again. Emails will be sent to elders and deacons a few weeks before the
next Communion Sunday each month to request volunteers for serving. We would
appreciate some help. If you are only comfortable serving a certain way, please
reply with specificity. We will definitely need extra help on the next Communion
nd
Sunday (November 2 ). Please let Beau or Allison McGrath know if you are
available to help out.
PEACEMAKING OFFERING: Contributions to the Peacemaking Offering are still
being received. Your gifts will be used to promote peace and justice efforts locally
and around the world. Envelopes are in the pew racks. Thank You!
REQUESTS FOR BENEVOLENCE PROJECTS ENDOWMENT FUND GRANTS: A

HORIZONS BIBLE STUDY: All are welcome to join a monthly scripture study on the
first Wednesday of each month at 10AM in the Kemper Room, September through
April. The scripture study is based on Paul’s writings in the second letter to the
Corinthian church, in which he deals with aspects of faith such as grace,
forgiveness, image of God and reconciliation. For a copy of the study book ($6) or
for more information please contact Tiffany Zents at [email protected] or by
calling the church office.
