Welcome to Mt. Carmel!
What a pleasure it is to worship together! All of the directions for worship are found in this
bulletin. Music that isn’t printed in the bulletin is found in the cranberry hymn book located
on the shelf under the seat in front of you. The bulletin references this book as ELW
(Evangelical Lutheran Worship) and guides you to the hymn number which is found in large
numbers on the top right hand of the page. We hope that the information on this page will
help to make your worship experience comfortable.
The “Connection Card” which is inserted into this bulletin serves two purposes. Side One
is our means of keeping up with you through the mail (both email and posted mail). Side
Two is how we learn of your prayer needs. Members, please provide your name, but only
fill in contact information if there has been a change. Please follow the instructions on the
card and let’s Connect!
Holy Communion is a sacrament in which we believe Jesus is truly present. All who feel
called by the Spirit are welcome to Christ’s table. The ushers will direct you forward via the
side aisles and kneel or stand at the altar rail. Open your hands to first receive bread. Gluten-free wafers are available; please advise the pastor of your preference when you come
forward during communion. After you have received bread, indicate to the assisting minister if you would prefer an individual glass of wine or grape juice, or the Common Cup of
wine. After receiving, you may stay at the altar rail for a moment to pray, and then return
to your seat. If you are unable to come forward for communion but would like to receive it
at your seat, please indicate so to an usher.
For Little Ones:
Children’s Church is a part of our worship together. Kids, ages 3-9, will be invited to the
fellowship hall for a lesson with our Children’s Church volunteers. They will be brought back
to the sanctuary in time to share in the Lord’s Supper. Children who have not yet communed are welcome to the Lord’s Table to receive a blessing.
Goody bags hang on a small rack in the lobby. They contain toys and other things to keep
children engaged during worship. Grab one and enjoy!
The Cry Room is available if you’d like a private place to be with your infant or toddler
where you can still see and hear the service. It is in the back of the sanctuary and accessed
through the lobby.
Nursery is open during both services as well as during Sunday School between services.
Karen Weber, our nursery teacher, is a professional child care provider. Ask the usher for
directions.
For the not so little:
Hearing aids are available behind the sound board on the wall.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask an usher.

Second Lesson
1 Corinthians 1:18–25
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is
written,
‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the
world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God
through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and
Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumblingblock to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the
called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and
God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,
and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of
cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the
cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take
these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your
house will consume me. ’The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can
you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise

Apostles’ Creed
AM: Responding to God’s Word, let us confess our faith in the words of the
Apostles’ Creed.
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and
earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under
Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to
the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to
judge the living and the dead.

The offertory and Communion songs being sung during Lent are
from the Taize tradition, a Protestant monastic community in
France. They are meditative chants designed to quiet our thoughts and
bring us into greater awareness of God's spirit in our midst. Use this
time to be en"chant"ed by the presence of God.
The Truth About Pharisees—The Gospels use the Pharisees as foils for
Jesus, and the comparisons are always invidious. Most Jews rejected
Jesus, so their followers were a potent rival to the nascent church. Their
reality is quite different. The problem is that Pharisees can become a
stand-in for Jews in general, and generate anti-Jewish stereotyping. In
the lobby, there are copies of part of an article in Sojourners magazine
offering seven corrective facts about the first-century group that gave
rise to modern Judaism. It's by Amy-Jill Levine, a prominent New Testament scholar at Vanderbilt.
