Driven by increasing deployments in backhaul and last mile networks and aided by government initiatives such as the National Optical Fibre Network
(NOFN) and cable TV digitisation projects, the optic fibre cable (OFC) market in India is on an upward growth trajectory. According to industry
estimates, OFC is set to become a $420 million industry in India by 2020.
The key enablers for OFC deployment in India include the increasing demand for data services, proliferation of next-generation broadband technologies
including FTTx, HSPA+ and LTE, and the availability of low-cost smartphones and tablet PCs. Besides, Indian consumers are increasingly shifting towards
internet-driven applications such as video-on-demand and HDTV, which is boosting investments in OFC network expansion.
In the telecom space, the major users of OFC are telecom service providers, internet service providers, multiple system operators, cable TV operators,
defence agencies and PSUs, among others. Besides telecom, other sectors that contribute significantly to OFC demand are power, railways, and oil
and gas, all of which have specific connectivity requirements.
The government is also promoting several projects to build and strengthen the OFC network for addressing the country’s increasing data transmission
requirements. Its ambitious NOFN project is currently the biggest growth driver for the OFC market in India. The Rs 720 billion project, which was
launched in 2012, involves laying about 500,000 km of incremental fibre cables across 250,000 village panchayats.
While not much progress was achieved in the first three years of the launch of the NOFN, the project started gaining momentum from end-2014
onwards. Since then, over 23,000 gram panchayats have been covered up till April 2015. However, the project continues to lag severely behind
schedule. In order to expedite project implementation, the government has decided to bring private players on board for the next phase, for rolling
out fibre across 50,000-70,000 gram panchayats.
Meanwhile, as operators continue to expand their OFC deployments on the access, core and backhaul fronts, several of them have adopted the OFC
network sharing model to optimally utilise the existing data networks and minimise costs (including right-of-way charges). For instance, OFC network
sharing was a key component of Reliance Jio Infocomm’s infrastructure agreements with its peers.
As the developments in the high speed broadband market push the Indian telecom sector to the next phase of growth, OFC manufacturers in the
country are expecting a significant growth in demand for their products in the coming year. Several of these manufacturers are, therefore, investing
significantly in expanding their production capacities.
The mission of this conference is to examine the emerging trends along with essential drivers, challenges and opportunities in India’s OFC market;
highlight key government and private sector initiatives; and showcase the latest innovations and most promising technologies.
