Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART)
• SARTs use a multidisciplinary approach to
investigate and treat victims of sexual violence and
may consist of law enforcement, advocates,
prosecutors, crime labs, and a Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiner.
• SARTs utilize a victim centered approach,
providing the victim with compassionate, efficient
and skilled care and support throughout the
criminal justice process.
• SART members receive advanced training and
protocol guidelines that improve the quality of
evidence and strengthens the evidence admissibility
in court. Reporting and conviction rates have
increased in states where SART models are in place.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE):
• A SANE is a registered nurse with advanced
education and training regarding sexual assault and
forensic nursing. SANEs completed a medico-legal
examination, collect and preserve evidence, apply
critical thinking skills and are considered expert
witnesses in the judicial system.
•SANE credentials are issued by the KY Board of
