IRHR Curriculum Case-Studies Module Issues addressed Original DEF Comments from APC for DEF Introductor y Module Obligations of ISPs/OSPs when operating in different countries; private censorship Google in China Digital Literacy Mission programme by GOI & Private Stakeholders This case seems to fit better under freedom of information. Suggest that you include it in the FOE/FOI section. I think the case you have called “Regulation on content by Govt of India FoE FoI Tension between preventing the exploitation of children online and freedom of expression; role of intermediaries; governance models for regulating content; international standards for limitations to FoE Limitations to FoE; incitement to violence; relationship between FoE and other rights; role of intermediaries Child sexual abuse images online ICICI Digital Village at Akodara Uganda LGBT Hate speech; relationship between FoE and public order; obligation of intermediaries to consider cultural/religious norms when operating in different countries Responses to network shutdowns; different types of censorship (political, moral, etc.); role of intermediaries in censorship Innocence of Muslims Movie, PK online debate on religious sensitivity Fatwa against Kashmiri girls on music band Two Girls arrested over Facebook comment Uttar Pradesh police on detaining Blocking in Egypt on Facebook” would work really well here. This case also seems to fit better into FOE/FOI. Suggest including it in that section, and perhaps prioritsing between ICICI digital village and the digital literacy case. Here you might consider using the “Blocking based on obscenity” case. I think this actually fits better to replace the innocence of Muslims case study. Perhaps you could look into the recent case of the GOI ordering ISPs to block 32 websites for this case. With the info given on this case, I do not see how it relates to internet rights specifically. Suggest sticking with the cases you already have. Revised after Comments from APC Regulation on content by Govt of India on Google, Facebook and Twitter “Blocking based on obscenity” case. GOI orders ISPs to block 32 websites Suggest Movie, PK here. Movie, PK online debate on religious sensitivity Could also use the recent case of the GOI ordering ISPs to block 32 websites for this case. GOI orders ISPs to block 32 websites or; GOI orders social networking sites to block 1,299 URLs between Internet Rights 2015 Relationship between freedom of information and privacy/security; levels of information available online; advocating for and use of open data in HR work Open Data Kenya Kanwal Bharti Movie, PK online debate on religious sensitivity Regulation on content by Govt of India on Facebook F/A Privacy Use of social media for political organising/protest; impact of access to the internet on the exercise of IR; impact of social media on power structures Relationship between online and offline association and protest; use of the internet to secure international support for national protest; use of internet in contexts where offline rights are severly restricted. DDOS attacks as a form of peaceful assembly; impact of DDOS attacks on other rights, such as access the internet, information on the internet, and freedom of expression and association; interplay between use of DDOS attacks by different actors Implications of govt identification programs for the right to privacy; balance between privacy and security; balance between provision of public services and respecting privacy rights Obligations of companies in respecting right to privacy; user control over data; terms of service Idle No More Whatsapp case Women driving Saudi Arabia Online harassment against activist Kavita Krishnan Ddos Attacks This should really be a case looking at open data/open government. Is there one in the indian context you can use? January 2013 and January 2014 ICICI Digital Village at Akodara Digital Literacy Mission programme by GOI & Private Stakeholders Suggestion using this one to replace Google in China Seems like a good match Excellent choice The Anonymous India letter case seems like a good match. Is there more information on anonymous activities in India you can use, for example: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05/18 /anonymous_ddos_india_sites/ Anonymous India Letter India Unique Identity Scheme CMS System for communicati on surveillance The current case study on UID from India. Suggest retaining this case study, and updating it if necessary. UID case study Mining Consumer Data Surveillance on 170 phones This case should consider the obligations of companies, consumer issues, not political targeting. Absolutely. We are looking at the issue from an company standpoint Also look at CMS for communications surveillance Internet Rights 2015 Link between real-name registration and right to privacy; link between anonymity and privacy; balance between right to privacy and FoE in the context of real-name registration Real name registrati on in Asia GoI seeking user information from Google, Facebook & Twitter Suggest using this case to replace Google in China. “Onlin e anonymity in India” would work well here I think. Shortlist: 1) Combination of “GoI seeking user information from Google, Facebook & Twitter” + “Regulation on content by Govt of India on Facebook” to replace “Google in China” 2)” Movie, PK online debate on religious sensitivity” to replace “Innocence of Muslims”; 3) “GOI ordering ISPs to block 32 websites” to replace “Uganda LGBT”; 4) “Online harassment against activist Kavita Krishnan” to replace “Women driving in KSA”; 5) “Anonymous India attacks” [looking beyond the letter] to replace “DDOS”; 6) “Online anonymity in India” to replace “Real name registration in Asia”; 7) “Whatsapp” to replace “Idle No More” Online anonymity in India Examining of Cyber Café rules vs exempting CSCs from real-name registration
