Stars of the Week
Sixth Form
Since October eight Year 12 students have been meeting weekly to design and build a robot that
has to take part in a set of Olympic style events for a competition. GE, a worldwide engineering
business, runs this to encourage more girls to take up a career in science, technology and
engineering. On Friday the students presented their progress to a panel of judges. All the students
communicated well and the judges were very impressed with the students’ professional attitude
and the robots they have built. The project finishes in June with a competition day at GE in
Cheltenham where our students will compete against other schools. Mrs Chesher congratulates
Natalie Storey, Natasha Larcom, Isobel Thornton, Anisha Paston, Ellie Burkes, Manon Meyers,
Julia Lips and Katie Wilson for their whole hearted involvement with the project so far.
Congratulations to Elliot Linney, Zahid Monzur, Abigail Lindsay, Edward Atherton and James
Wood all achieved A grades in their AS Geography mock exams.
The Droitwich Football Academy team has reached the final of the Herefordshire Giant Killers Cup
and will be competing against Westfield's FC. The game is due to be played on Wednesday 1st
April at 7:30pm. Great credit must go to the team which has represented the school so well this
season and deserves to be in the cup final.
Ruth Hadley has consistently completed her AS PE Acquisition of Movement Skill homework tasks
to an excellent standard.
Year 11
Congratulations to Alex Webb, Nathan Wilmott-Miller, Ollie Lamb, Lydia Kiriakopolou and Katie
Sambrook who have all made significant progress between the November and February mock
exams in Maths.
Extra-curricular Further Maths students took a mock exam last week and even though they have
not been studying this level of work for very long, they achieved outstanding results. The students
involved are Ed Battin, Charlotte Cartwright, Danny Chung, Ed Farmer, George Harris, Luke
Harrison, Tom Hodgson, Tom Hughes, Tom Jallands, Ryan Lee, Ryan Leurs, George Little,
Matthew Redfern and Vicky Sparkes. All students achieved a C grade or better but particular
mention goes to Ed Battin, Luke Harrison, Tom Hodgson and George Little who achieved an A star
with distinction.
The Y11 GCSE dance group are nominated for their consistent hard work and positive attitude
both in and out of lessons. The whole class are an absolute pleasure to teach and Miss Dudman
was really impressed with their mock exam results. The following deserve a particular mention:
Jessica Seabridge and Phoebe Sinnassamy for achieving A* grades, Maria Dunn, Lucy Hiam,
Molly Morris and Emily Williams for achieving A grades, Morgan Darby & Chloe Masters for the
great progress they are currently making and Megan Jones for the determination and resilience
she has demonstrated in recent weeks.
Alicja Gryzbek and Ed Farmer both achieved very impressive A*s in their mock exams for
Geography.
Year 9
Molly Taylor & Abi Smith are nominated for completing an outstanding piece of PE homework on
muscular endurance.
Year 8
Students in 8LC worked really well in the drama studio to produce a mini production of Macbeth.
Mrs Giles was really impressed with their teamwork and focus.
Dance Showcase:
On Thursday 19th March from 6.30pm the Y11 GCSE Dancers will be performing some of their
exam work in the theatre in preparation for their final exam in April. There will also be a few
dancers from Y8-10 performing their own work. Tickets will be available free of charge on the
door, although we will be collecting donations to support the Friends of Droitwich Spa High School
and some of our dancers who hope to attend and compete in the Dance World Cup with their
Dance School in the summer.
Plans for the Solar Eclipse
On Friday March 20, the UK is set for its first significant solar eclipse since the total eclipse of
August 11 1999. Droitwich Spa High School will be marking the event by giving every student and
every member of staff a pair of suitable viewing glasses and suspending lessons for 45 minutes to
allow students to witness this celestial event that will not be repeated for another seven years.
At 0825 on the morning of the 20th, the moon will touch the sun’s edge and will continue its
journey until 09.31, at which point up to 90% of the sun will be covered for those at our latitude.
Students at the High School will, by then, be outside to watch the event through their special
glasses, having already been briefed by the Science department earlier in the week about what is
exactly happening in the sky.
The sun will remain partially covered until 10.41am, but it is expected that students will only stay
watching for the twenty minutes or so that the sun is obscured to the greatest extent.
Parents’ Evening Thursday 12 March for Years 11, 12 and 13 from 5.00 – 7.30 pm.
We have been able to arrange for a number of employers to attend our Parents’ Consultation
Evening on 12 March. The employers will be situated in the Main Concourse and include the Army
and Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd. You will be able to speak to the representatives of each business or
organisation about career opportunities, including apprenticeships and gather some information
about the local labour market. Our two school Careers Advisers, Lindsay Stevens and Sarah Beeton
have arranged this event and they will be there on the evening to answer questions and to assist
with any applications.
I very much look forward to seeing you on the evening. When arriving would you please sign in at
main Reception.

19 March – Dance Showcase (6.30 pm).
