SIGHT
SEEING
Annecy is known as the “pearl of the French Alps”, in reference
to its localization between its lake and the mountain massifs of the
Alps, or the “Venice of the Alps”.
It has a rich history, from the roman period to the XIXth century, through the Middle-Age, when it became the residence of the
Counts of Geneva.
From this, Annecy owns an interesting historical heritage, which
you’ll find a little list above

Listed as a Historical Monument in 1902, Annecy Castle was the residence of the Counts of Geneva until 1394. Numerous transformations during the 15th and 16th centuries gave the castle its unusual
style, a blend of medieval defensive architecture and elegance in
the French renaissance style. Abandoned in the 18th century, it was
used as military barracks until 1947. The Castle was bought by the
Town of Annecy in 1953. The first exhibition was inaugurated three
years later, announcing the cultural vocation of this former palace
of Princes.
Through temporary exhibitions and a permanent presentation in
the fully restored castle rooms, the museum presents rich diversified
collections to visitors. They comprise objects linked to regional heritage and lake architecture, medieval sculptures, paintings of the
18th, 19th and 20th centuries linked to the alpine countryside and
contemporary works of art that question the relationship of man
with his natural environment.
Included in the visit to the Musée-Château, the Regional Observatory of Alpine Lakes comprises 700 m2 of exhibition area in the Tower
and Logis Perrière. It invites visitors to discover the complex, fragile
and coveted environment of the alpine lakes through original museography, organised around five fields of scientific research: biology,
ecology, ethnology, archaeology and limnology. The Observatory is
a response to the concerns of a population wishing to preserve the
quality of their environment. It contributes to enhancing the value
and protecting the natural alpine environment.
Palais de l’Île

In 1325 the stronghold was first mentioned as a prison, no doubt
the longest and most continuous function of the Ile house. It simultaneously housed other activities linked to the court life, for instance
the Counting House and the Palais de justice (law court) from which
it got its name “Palais de l’Ile” in the 16th century. In 1944, Palais
de l’Ile presented to the public the history of the Town of Annecy. An
emblematic and symbolic place, it became Centre d’interprétation
de l’architecture et du patrimoine for Annecy and its communes in
1999. To help the population understand their urban environment,
the Center for Urban Interpretation invites visitors to discover the
rich heritage today covering 13 communes, by placing side-by-side
different approaches. On the ground floor the sometimes troubled
history of Palais de l’Ile is related.
Annecy’s old city
As already said, Annecy is also known as the “Venice of the Alps”,
in reference to its canals. It’s populated since 5000 years, and saw
the Gauls, the Romans, the Medieval Lords and the Episcopal power. You can see its rich history by its old building.
Annecy is also a fortified city, with its castle and its great doors,
which at this period, permitted to control the whereabouts in the city.
Just have a walk in the streets, and rise on the fortifications to have
a great panorama on the city and the lake!
