BioticAbiotic.notebook April 24, 2015 Ecosystems Unit 6.L.2.3: Abiotic and biotic factors affect the ability of organisms to grow, survive, and/or create their own food. Warm Up 1) How do bacteria play a role in the recycling of matter? 2) Draw a food web using the living things listed below. Essential Questions: 1) What is the difference between a biotic factor and an abiotic factor? snake, hawk, shrub, deer, grasses, rabbit, mountain lion 2) What are examples of limiting factors in an environment? 3) How do organisms respond to limiting factors? Feb 912:13 PM Feb 103:23 PM What is the difference between a biotic factor and an abiotic factor? List the biotic and abiotic factors in the picture. bio means ??? biotic factor abiotic factors the living parts of an ecosystem the nonliving parts of an ecosystem examples: examples: animals, plants, fungi, bacteria water, minerals, rocks, air, soil, sunlight Feb 912:10 PM Feb 912:38 PM Biomes area that has similar conditions (climate, plants, animals, etc.) Examples: Desert Rainforest Grasslands Forest Feb 912:41 PM Feb 182:27 PM 1 BioticAbiotic.notebook April 24, 2015 What are examples of limiting factors in an environment? limiting factor: any factor or condition that limits the growth of a population in an ecosystem What would be an example of a limiting factor? too much/too little of food, water, light large population of predators How do organisms respond to limiting factors? lack of water in grassland cause grass to ..... then reduces the number of seeds produced Who eats the seeds? What would happen to them? Who depends on them to survive? What would happen to that population? small population of prey Feb 912:13 PM Feb 912:14 PM What do the Deer Do? Oh Deer! During this game we will find out how much the size of a deer herd could change each year. Some students will pretend to be food, water, shelter, and space the resources that the deer need for survival. A few students, selected by me, will pretend to be a disease or a predator that can kill the deer. Each round of the game will represent a year in the forest. Feb 912:15 PM Before each round, each student who represents a deer decides to look for food, water, shelter, or space and makes the sign for it. Once a sign is picked you can NOT change it. What do the Resources Do? Before each round, each student who represents a resource decides to be food, water, shelter, or space and makes the sign for it. Once a sign is picked you can NOT change it. I will select a students each round to represent a disease and another to represent a predator. Feb 182:21 PM Signs Summarizing Results 1.) What happen to the size of the deer herd when there was plenty of food, water, shelter, and space during the game? 2) What happen to the size of the deer herd when there was a limited amount of food, water, shelter, and space? 3) What do you think would happen to thew size of a deer herd when resources are plentiful in a real forest? What about when the resources are limited? Food Water Space Shelter 4) How might deer interact within their ecosystem to meet their needs for water, food, shelter, and space? 5) What might change the amount of available food, water, shelter, or space from year to year in a real forest? 6) What besides birth and death might cause a change in the size of a deer herd? Feb 182:22 PM Feb 912:16 PM 2 BioticAbiotic.notebook April 24, 2015 Exit Ticket: 1) What environmental factor would most likely prevent an orange tree from surviving in the desert? lack of moisture 2) What are three abiotic and three biotic factors of a river ecosystem? (you can make a chart) Feb 182:17 PM Apr 2411:57 AM 3
