On Feb 6th, 2015, Jodi House members attended the grand re-opening
of the Montecito YMCA pool. Jodi House started partnering with the
Montecito YMCA in May of last year to offer recreational swimming
lessons to its members. Earlier this year the YMCA started renovations
on their pool. The grand re-opening celebration included pool
activities, free swimming lessons, and Q&A with Olympic gold
medalist, Jeff Farrell.
Bicycle Safety at Jodi House
In February, Jodi House did a special presentation on bicycle safety
and helmet fitting. We worked alongside Elizabeth Taylor-Linzey, Injury
Prevention/Outreach Coordinator at Cottage Hospital, to educate
members and staff about the importance of wearing helmets when
biking. Cottage Hospital donated helmets for all Jodi House members
and did individual fittings for those who attended. Members were also
provided with maps of the safest bike routes around Santa Barbara.
This presentation provided members with tools needed to ensure a
safe ride while on a bicycle.
IN THE NEWS:
Senator Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has introduced a bill that
would extend California’s youth helmet requirement to adults, mandate
reflective clothing while biking at night, and fine cyclists $25 for not
complying.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and your 2015 is
off to a great start! Thank you to Medtronic for your generous funding
and support!
Member Spotlight: David Fortenbury
After suffering a stroke in October of 2013, David was left without a
place to live and without family or friends to support him in his
recovery. He found temporary shelter at Casa Esperanza in July of
2014 and was referred to Jodi House shortly after. With the support of
Jodi House staff and fellow members, David focused on his recovery
and began to truly understand what had happened to him as a result
of his brain injury. With this knowledge, he was better equipped to face
the daily challenges associated with his disability. On top of being a
stroke survivor, David also suffered from diabetes. Jodi House staff
taught David how to manage his diabetes through appropriate food
choices and beneficial exercise techniques. After a few months at Jodi
House, David found himself homeless again. He was unable to
properly care for himself, and Jodi House staff became concerned that
he may not survive much longer if left out on the street. They reached
out to his only remaining relative, his grandmother, who lived in
Florida. After reassurance from the staff that David was focused on
recovery and could benefit from time spent with family, she agreed to
have him come live with her in January of this year. Since that time,
Jodi House staff has made regular follow up calls to track his progress.
According to both of David and his grandmother, everything has been
going well. Without Jodi House’s involvement, he might not be where
he is today. We are all very proud of David and all he has
accomplished in his recovery.
The Jodi House staff attended a UCSB Arts and Lectures presentation
on February 2nd by Norman Doidge, M.D..
The Brain’s Way of Healing:
Remarkable Discoveries and
Recoveries from the Frontiers of
Neuroplasticity
"Neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to change its structure and
function in response to mental experience – is one of the most
important breakthroughs in neuroscience in the last 400 years. In his
revolutionary new book, best-selling author Norman Doidge (The Brain
That Changes Itself ) shows how neuroplastic healing works. He
describes how natural, non-invasive treatments – based on light,
sound, vibration and movement – can awaken the brain’s remarkable
healing capacities. And he explores cases of its applications, from
chronic pain relief to stroke recovery, autism to multiple sclerosis, while
teaching us how to reduce dementia risks and more."
Norman Doidge talked about how mental structure determines brain
structure and vice-versa. His research focuses on "re-synchronizing a
noisy brain" using electrical patterns as the universal language. We
were glad to see a few of our members also attended his talk and are
interested in reading his book!
CRH Stroke Education Series
Saturday March 7th
Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital and Center for Life Long Learning are
gearing up for the 2015 Stroke Education Series "Strokes: Prevention,
Rehabilitation and Possibilities" which will be held Saturday, March 7
and Saturday, March 14th in the Meisel Conference Center. The target
audience is health care providers, persons who have had strokes and
their family/caregivers.
