GRADE 7 HISTORY Unit 2: New France and British North America British North America Why does Canada have a queen? Canada retained its monarchy because the French and other colonists of British North America refused to join the American Revolution (1775 – 1783). 50000 united Empire Loyalists came and settled in Canada, remaining loyal to the monarch (King/Queen). War of 1812 – Canada resisted the Americans and maintained the monarchy. 1 British North America What can you learn about history from visiting a cemetery? Use your text book, pages H70 ‐ H85 to match the events with their dates. 1759, 1763, 1764, 1774, 1776, 1783 British North America 1759 British defeat French and occupy Québec 1763 Treaty of Paris (I) transfers sovereignty of Québec from France to Britain/Royal Proclamation of 1763 introduces harsh British policies to Québec 1764 Britain has disputes with the Thirteen American Colonies over their contributions to pay for the Seven Years’ war with France (1756‐1763) 1774 Britain introduces new policies to please Canadiens in Québec and the First Nations to keep them loyal in case there is a war with the Thirteen Colonies 3 British North America 1775 1783 The Thirteen Colonies declare independence in the American Revolutionary War or The War of Independence • American troops invade and attack Québec City; defeated by British troops and Canadien militia • opponents of American independence (Loyalists) begin to migrate to British North America; about 50 000 make the journey in the next 20 years Treaty of Paris (II) recognizes independence of the Thirteen Colonies as the United States of America 4
