21st May - Kalinda Primary School
1 Newsletter No. 14 - Term 2– Week 6 st Thursday 21 May 2015 OPEN NIGHT It was great to see our school community join us for Open Night. There was much to see, do and taste around the school. The students were very excited and I do hope parents, grandparents, extended family and friends enjoyed the evening. I did hear from students how yummy the brussel sprouts and other healthy treats were from Kelly in the SAKG kitchen, how delicious the samples from Jo in the canteen were, and how everyone enjoyed the green tea ice-cream from the Japanese program. Although I was showing new visitors around the school and so did not get to see the performances in the stadium, I heard they were just terrific. We also had the launch of the new Kalinda Choir t-shirts, so I hope people like them. Our String group performed as well as our Highland Dancers who always put on a terrific show. Thank you to Lexi, Cheryl and Holly for their work with the students in Performing Arts. ENROL NOW FOR 2016 A note to all our families who will be enrolling students for Foundation 2016 – PLEASE HAND IN YOUR ENROLMENT FORMS NOW! I would be very grateful if you could submit your enrolment forms so that we can plan for 2016. I know this is some way off but the Education Department needs to know the approximate number of students we may have next year. WENDY McLAUGHLAN KALINDA CHEF 9 10 KALINDA COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD Nutrition and Healthy Eating Tips Food as a Reward When you think back to your childhood do you remember being given a lolly or something sweet when you had hurt yourself or when you’d been good? You may be doing this for your children too in order to distract them from pain or reward good behaviour. Although this seems pretty harmless it actually sets up an understanding for your child that if they are feeling emotional or have done a job well they deserve food - this is the precursor to emotional eating which can be a difficult habit to kick later in life. Instead of giving food as a reward or a cure for pain it’s more constructive to give them a hug along with understanding or praise as the situation warrants. Sweet foods can be part of a healthy diet but they should be used as “sometimes” foods that your family enjoys on occasion, not as the cure for emotions.
