Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), which involves students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9
from all states and territories in Australia and is overseen by each school. The program assesses the students’ skills in
four areas - reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy. The tests
were held Tuesday 12th, Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th May. The students in our school are used to assessments
in many forms and feel comfortable attempting formal and informal assessments in their many guises. We cannot
‘practice’ NAPLAN but we do become familiar with the different format in some of the tests; multiple choices in
Numeracy, hidden spelling errors in texts for spelling are two examples. I find that keeping it low key is less stressful
for children. NAPLAN does give us useful data on how we are progressing however we do have a couple of students
who do poorly when we think that they should have performed at a much higher standard. This may be because
they are feeling unwell, were tired or they raced through the tests to get finished first NAPLAN is a snapshot of
progress; our wonderful staff have the videos.
What a great day we had to have a Bunning’s Sausage Sizzle. The day was sunny, the stall was very well manned and
the DIY crew were out in their droves We couldn’t have asked for better conditions and it paid off for us. Thank you
Bree and all the wonderful ‘sizzlers’ for making it such a success.

If you weren’t amazed at the talent displayed during the concerts held
at KHPS for Education Week, then you must have stayed home. What a
genuine delight to see the students performing so well and so obviously
with joy. Elizabeth Garnsworthy (Dance teacher), Kate Gilmore (Music
teacher) and the class teachers really need to take bow for preparing
the students so well. The students were involved in many ways so a big
thank you to Ella V for compering, Maddie M and Oisin Mc for the
sound, Elise V T, Ollie T and Johnathon V for being runners, Chloe S and
Anna N. A big thank you for Judy Cole and Soula Stewart, along with
their team for organism the Morning Tea. The concerts were all so well
attended and the students all so very talented. Well done

Uninvited Guest:
This week in kitchen we had an uninvited visitor …. It was a large green
praying mantis; - it hitchhiked in with the lettuce harvested from our
garden!
After three years of kitchen classes we have prepared quite a few
recipes. Some students are now confident to cook these recipes at
home for their families! If you would like to find our past recipes
you can ask Mrs Funnell or Mrs. Evans, or find them on google drive
(for the seniors in the school who have an account). Also, there are
still copies of last year’s cookbook available at the office.
Thankyou to all the parent helpers, Mrs Evans, & Ms
Sharrock and especially Mrs Funnelle, we couldn’t have
kitchen without you.

BUNNING’S SUNDAY SAUSAGE SIZZLE
A big thank you must go out to Bree Vallance and the team for a great effort at last Sunday’s
sausage sizzle. Her wonderful team of helpers included; Matthew Harman, Danielle Alvarenga,
Allen Baranov, Paul Kazzaal, Adrian Fielden, Jagmit Chug, Kim Adey, Cassie Ieraci, Denise
Cocksedge, David Marriot, Colin Marshall, Steve & Jenny Watt, Nicole Oliver, Ngaire Sedecvich,
Elfie Abdalmanan, Elise & Adam Harling, Heather Haskett, Darren Wilton, Vaia Gounis, Amy
Kersten, Kylie Grau, Greg Furbank, Andrea Westcott, Lisa Druce, Catharina Greve, Carlos & Yvis
Pulido, Kathy & Renae O’Meara, Odette & Jacob Andrew, Andrew Freese, Hamish Layzell and staff
Wendy Stirling and Matt Jamieson. They raised a terrific $1600.00 and actually had to go and
purchase more sausages during the day. What a tremendous effort for the Fundraising Team.

project teaches students about biodiversity and their local environment, it provides them with an opportunity to
develop leadership skills and participate in their local community.
Our work in helping to preserve local biodiversity was formally recognised in a special ceremony by the Mayor of
Kingston, Ron Brownlees, who pointed out that this work is not just providing a teaching resource for the school,
but is also an ongoing benefit to the local community well into the future.
We commenced work on establishing our Wildlife Corridor in 2013 and added another section last year.
Our aim is to extend the area all the way to the side gate by National Tree Day, 24 July 2015.
We need some help to clear the remainder of the site! We will be running mini working bees on Friday
afternoons from 3:30pm to 4pm and for half an hour during lunchtime Gardening Club.

JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL
The Junior School Council has decided to raise money for a very important charity and that charity is the Make a
Wish Foundation. The Make a Wish Foundation helps dreams come alive for
very sick children. You can help out by buying a star from your Junior School
Council Representative, they are for sale now and cost $1 for a red star or $2
for a purple star. Let’s all work together to support this very important cause.

clothing with no name and eventually they wind up being sold in the second hand uniform shop. Also if you purchase
second hand clothing, please rename the garment with your child’s name. Many thanks for your co-operation.

Issue 4 of the Scholastic Book Club has been sent home with students. If you wish to place an order, this needs to be
done, by either ordering online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or returning the forms to school, by 1st June. Please
place child’s name and class on front of the envelope, with the order and cash or cheque inside. If you place your
order online, please do not send the forms back to school. The school earns 20% of sales through Book Club, which is
used to purchase new books for the library, benefitting all students.

POCO MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TUITION
Poco Music is taking enrolments for instrumental music lessons in Term 2, 2015.
Private Lessons are conducted during school hours for Guitar, Drum kit, Singing, Strings,
Brass and woodwind and Keyboard.

Winter Interschool Sport Report Round 3 KHPS vs Southmoor
Introduction: On Friday the 15th May, the Year Five and Six students from Kingston Heath Primary School played
round three of the winter Interschool Sports. It was our second game. We played at home so the softball and
football games were held at 50 acres and netball and soccer were held at Kingston Heath Primary School. After such
a great day of interschool sport, we can’t wait to play our next game in Round Four next week
Netball Girls: We played against Southmoor we won by 3 goals. The scores were pretty close. We all had heaps of
fun playing against such a friendly school. Well done to Maddie, Elise and Taylor for getting all of our goals, well
done also to the rest of the team for putting in 110%. Let’s hope we can win our next game and make it to the next
stage.
Netball Mixed: When we got to school we were pumped and ready to win. After the teachers called the roll we got
up on the netball court. We did some passing drills until the Southmoor team got here. When the Southmoor team
arrived we got our bibs on and started. In the first quarter, we played hard and it payed off, we were in the lead. In
the second quarter we were still in the lead but we had lost our best shooter, Jeffery to the other team for the
quarter so we didn't get nearly as many goals as we did in the first quarter. In the third quarter Phoebe went to the
other team and Georgia became centre. She would usually pass to Tillie because she was usually open and she had
been playing the game for a while. In the last quarter we played our hardest and ended up winning 13 to 0.The
highlights were Jeffery’s awesome shots and getting told we had won 13 to 0.
Softball Girls: Today we played softball against Southmoor. The score was 1-5, we lost. Some of the highlights were
the support from both teams, Anna T getting our only home run and all the fun we had. A few things we could
improve on are our fielding and our pitching. A big thanks to our captain Kylie and our coach Ms Wheatley.
Softball Mixed: Today was a big day. Everyone was so excited to play. Jonathan was our captain for the week. The
game was five to six; even though we lost we had the time of our lives. We all learned something new from pitching

Soccer: Today we played Southmoor. The highlights were Alfie scoring the first goal in less than 10m,Logan great
save, Alfie’s second goal, Finn’s great pass,Nikki and Sai’s great defending, Joel refusing to go off the field after
getting pushed badly. We lost 5-2. but we showed great skill and sportsmanship.
AFL Football: We arrived at the 50 acres with adrenalin running through our bodies and ready to play. We had the
oval ready and the goal posts up. Only 30 seconds after we set up they were there. We had to lend 3 players to their
team because they were short of players. The ball had been thrown up and I (Angus) was the tallest player on the
field so we had an advantage. It was full time and we won 16-8- 104 to 2-4-16.
