Message from the Principal
Dear Parents,
Our school captains, Charlotte C and Oliver T have been busy writing their speech
for the ANZAC ceremony that we will conduct Friday afternoon. Both students
were mindful of the true spirit of ANZAC that has defined us as a nation and not
just about the fighting that occurred. I was very proud listening to the
conversation between the two of them.
Mrs Azzi registered us to participate in the Gallipoli Oaks project. As we were one
of the first 300 schools to to register, we have been allocated a Gallipoli Oak
seedling. The oak tree seedlings have special significance as they come from trees
that grew from acorns that soldiers collected during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915-16.
The seedlings will grow into Gallipoli Oak trees that are small, prickly trees that are the same as those that grow
along the ridges and valleys of the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. The project aims to help young Victorians to deepen
their understanding of the Anzac campaign and celebrate the ongoing friendship between Australia and Turkey.
The Gallipoli campaign took place between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916 in south-western Turkey. It was the
first major battle involving Australian and New Zealand troops, costing the lives of more than 8000 Australians.

We held a tree planting ceremony at the front of the school followed by a
service in the hall. Again, many thanks to the school captains, Mr Thompson
for the tree site preparation and to Ms Wolske who played both the Last Post
and the Rouse on the bugle.
All the students in the school made a poppy and they made a magnificent
display. Well done everyone!
Many thanks to our parents who have volunteered to be Classroom Representatives. These parents play an
important role as the liaison person for teachers and for parents, they support the Fundraising team and also
organize parent evenings. That is a small snapshot of what Parent Reps do. Below is a list of the reps for 2015:

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT
The new School Council met on Monday night this week. We all had our photos taken which will be displayed on the
windows near the office. You will now all be able to easily identify all school council members. Please feel free to
approach any of us with issues or comments you would like taken to School Council. Wendy also holds a Principal
and Parent morning tea every month, the week before school council and this is also is a good opportunity to bring
any issues you would like to discuss.

We talked about how effective the school has been in communicating the benefits of being an International
Baccalaureate School offering the Primary Years Program (PYP). We hope the article in the last newsletter helped
the school community to better understand the great benefits of this program and the great opportunities it offers
our children’s education.
If you have any questions regarding the PYP Program, please feel free to talk to your child’s teacher or Wendy.
It’s also great for our school if you tell others in the wider community the benefits of the PYP program, the Stephanie
Alexander Kitchen Garden program, our strong Performing Arts program and everything else we offer What a
fantastic school our kids attend! Please let your friends and neighbours know and encourage them to enrol.
Fundraising was discussed also and we brainstormed ideas about opportunities for fundraising outside of the school
community. Our big hope for this year is to be able to get the central courtyard re-surfaced. This will be beneficial
for many reasons but especially for safety as some of the bricks are a trip hazard. As this will be a large spend for the
school, approx. $14,000, we are looking at ways we can raise money for this important project. If you have any ideas
for fundraising opportunities, please pass them onto the school office.
Each month we look at a range of Policies, we ensure they are current and up to date. These policies are also sent to
parents so as the school community across the year, every family will have the opportunity to have a say on school
policies.The policies we looked at and approved for this month were:

Greetings Kingston Heath School Community,
Have you ever wondered about the workings of the world? Do you have a particular interest in a science endeavour?
The Science Committee would like to extend your science knowledge by prompting you to investigate the answer to
a weekly science question. We would like you to send your answers via email to the school or snail mail to Ms.
Sipthorpe. The families that are able to submit a correct answer will be listed in the newsletter each fortnight. Now

Please, please ensure your children’s school uniform is labelled with your child’s name. Each day we find pieces of
clothing with no name and eventually they wind up being sold in the second hand uniform shop. Also if you purchase

Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from Monday 18 May until Wednesday 20 May, 2015. It will be open
on these days from 8.30am – 9.00am and in the afternoon from 3.30pm – 4.00pm in the Prep foyer. Please come
along and support our book fair as this helps to build up our library resources.
