You and your family will be pleasantly surprised at all the things there are to do and see in this beautiful Lincolnshire Market Town. Spalding has a vibrant town centre, much of which is situated in a conservation area, with unique independent shops and a number of East European supermarkets with a wide range of continental foodstuffs for you to discover; a traditional English market day on Tuesdays and Saturdays; historical buildings to visit such as Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens, the Chain Bridge Forge (which is a living museum) and a myriad of outstanding churches which are situated throughout the town. There are many fine restaurants, coffee shops, public houses and night clubs to satisfy all tastes and budgets and why not enjoy a film, musical show or play at the South Holland Centre or have a fun time at Alley-Catz bowling. Spalding boasts beautiful Georgian terraces and tree-lined walks along the River Welland, which runs through the centre of town. You can also take a trip on the famous Spalding water taxi, which will take you to the Springfields Outlet Shopping Centre and award winning Festival Gardens. Spalding is an excellent base for visiting some of the other attractions in the South Holland area. Experience the diversity of habitats around the Wash Estuary, one of Europe’s most protected coastal areas; visit the magnificent churches in the surrounding towns and villages, many of which have spectacular annual flower festivals; or just enjoy the tranquillity and relaxation whilst exploring the network of Fens waterways. There’s certainly plenty to see and do in and around the Spalding area, and all under Lincolnshire’s famous “big skies”. Whatever you decide to do, the Town Centre Management Team sincerely hopes that you enjoy this guide and your visit to Spalding and that you will come again and, also tell your family and friends about us! Very Best Wishes, Dennis Hannant MBE Spalding Town Centre Manager 3 from the 19th Century Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens family days to remember The HeritageTrail - A step back in time... Start your walk on Broad Street, in the centre of Spalding. Here you will find one of the most spectacular buildings in the town, an 18th Century Manor House which is now home to the Spalding Constitutional Club (1) Just up from the Constitutional Club, you will find another tradition in the form of the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society (2) One of the oldest in the country, with an impressive list of past members, the club is still active today. Continue your stroll past the Lincolnshire Poacher (3) and down to the bank of the River Welland; the river which the town grew up around and the embankments of which were built by the Romans. With the river on your left, take a short walk to cross over High Bridge (4) . This river crossing has existed since medieval times, although the current bridge dates back to 1838 and was originally called the Coronation Bridge. On the other side of the bridge, follow the river to your right and enjoy the scenery until you reach Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and Gardens (5). This grade I listed building is steeped in history and beautiful architecture and is surrounded by 5 acres of magnificent gardens. With your historical house senses filled, trace your steps back along the river. This time, don’t cross the bridge, but rather continue your river walk until you reach Chain Bridge Forge Museum (6), a lovingly restored 18th Century building. Ayscoughfee Museum, Spalding Continuing your walk along the river and down Holbeach Road, you will come to St Pauls Church (7). This stunning church was designed by the same architect who is responsible for St Pancras station. You are now just a stone’s throw from Springfields Outlet Shopping and Festival Gardens (8). With an array of shops, restaurants and cafes, it is a great place to catch your breath before hopping on the Water Taxi back into the centre of town or getting one of the regular bus services. 6 • Pinchbeck Engine Museum • South Holland Centre • Water Taxi • Cley Hall Hotel • Red Lion Hotel Don’t forget to pick up... Many of the Hall’s owners have left their mark on the building, meaning that a visit to Ayscoughfee is a chance to experience different architectural styles and features from the Medieval to the Victorian, and the opportunity to come face to face with some of the people that lived here. The Museum also tells the story of the historic town of Spalding and the surrounding Lincolnshire Fens. Many events take place throughout the year, including theatre productions, craft fairs and band concerts - it’s always worth checking out our website for more information. www.ayscoughfee.org The Hall is set in five acres of beautiful gardens, which feature a listed War Memorial by the celebrated architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, a childrens play area and a café, all adding up to a fabulous day out. It is an impressive church with seating for more than 300 parishioners. As drainage technology progressed, steam powered drainage engines were replaced with diesel engines, and then with electricity powered pumps. However, diesel engines were never introduced on this site as the transition, in 1952, from steam power to electricity was direct. Clay Lake, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE12 6BL 10 Crowland Abbey, Crowland HERITAGE Moulton Mill: Built in 1822 by Robert King, Moulton Mill was a fully functioning windmill, grinding wheat and other products. Over the years, winds and storms damaged the Mill and many repairs have been carried out. A campaign to restore the Mill to working order was started and 14 years later, after £2m of investment, the final sails were fitted. In April 2013, dreams were realised as, for the first time in over 100 years, the Mill ground the first bag of flour using wind power alone. The nine-storeyed mill is 80 ft (24.4 metres) to the curb and 100 ft (29.6 metres) to top of the cap. Moulton Mill is the tallest working windmill in Great Britain and one of the tallest worldwide. Entry: Adults £4.00 Concessions (over 60s) £2.95 Children (5 – 16) £2.00 Under 5s – free Open: Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Bank Holidays between 10am and 4pm. Last tour goes at 3pm Moulton Mill, Moulton Crowland Abbey, Crowland Crowland Abbey: Dating back to the 8th Century, the abbey was dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Guthlac. After a fraught history, it is believed that the majority of the damage took place after a short siege by Parliamentarian forces in 1643. The nave roof fell in 1720, the main south wall was taken down in 1744. However, the north aisle of the nave was refurbished and remains in use as the parish church. The church contains a skull which is identified as the skull of the 9th century Abbot Theodore who was killed at the altar by Vikings. Sadly the skull is no longer on view to the public after it was stolen in 1982, before being returned anonymously in 1999. The Church Trail The Area’s finest... family days to remember In Lincolnshire you can find one of the finest collections of medieval churches of any county in England, with several given a mention in Simon Jenkins’ ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches’. These fine churches were built in the perpendicular style on the wealth of the wool trade. Some have suggested that influential land owners were trying to buy a place in the afterlife... Whatever the story, the churches of South Holland offer far more than renowned architecture and centuries of service - with the faithful offering their petitions to this day. Fayres and fragrant floral festivals offer a taste of heaven throughout the year; be moved by the art, music and special events. A feast of floral festivals... Most of the churches across South Holland run flower festivals, always popular with visitors and residents alike. Refreshments, lunches, plant sales and crafts are here to be enjoyed. With over 30 flower festivals each year, those with green fingers are always striving to create new, amazing and inspiring displays. Floral delights begin in the fortnight around the May Day bank holiday and continue through to September. Flower festivals can also be visited over most weekends from the end of June to the end of July with a further fragrant flurry over the August bank holiday weekend. Flower Festivals brochures are available locally and can be downloaded from the local Churches Together website - which also lists and maps the churches across the district: www.ctspad.org.uk. 31 Available at the Spalding Tourist Information Centre. T: 01775 764554 A Living Heritage Trail... The oldest churches are found in a ring around the Wash, roughly in a line that follows the A151 and A17 on the dry lands that rose above the fens. The western border includes the ruins of Sempringham Abbey amongst the line of churches along the A15. From East to West, at the gateway to Lincolnshire, visit St Matthew’s, Sutton Bridge - the only flint-faced church in South Lincolnshire. Long Sutton has the unusual spire of St. Mary's, said to be the oldest, highest and most perfect wooden spire in Europe. Visible from the A17 is ‘The Cathedral of the Fens’ as Gedney’s St Mary Magdalene church has been called; it’s noted for its clerestory of 12 closely spaced windows. The church of St Mary Magdalene, Fleet, has an attractive lych gate and a detached steeple and, in Holbeach, the entrance porch to All Saints church resembles a castle. All Saints, Moulton, is famous for its Adam and Eve font. Head south to Moulton Chapel and the 1722 octagonal church of St James, complete with balcony. A detour to St Mary’s, Cowbit reveals links back to 1384 and Spalding Priory. Return to St Mary’s, Whaplode, to see the monument to the local family, the Irby’s, and St Mary’s, Weston, has some colourful kneelers. Approaching Spalding, St Paul’s is the last church designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott (who also designed The Midland Hotel at St Pancras; his grandson designed the red telephone kiosk). St Mary & St Nicolas, dates from 1284 with roots back to 1051 and links to Spalding Grammar School from 1568; restored by Gilbert Scott. Heading north, it’s easy to spot Surfleet St Laurence with the tip of its spire some six feet out of true. Continue on through Gosberton, passing the Baptist church, built in 1666. St. Mary and the Holy Rood, Donington has memorials to local lad, the 19th Century explorer Matthew Flinders, famous for surveying much of the Australian coast.
