FULL POSITION DESCRIPTION
ABOUT THE COMMUNITYU PROGRAM:
The purpose of the CommunityU Program is to equip under-resourced young adults ages 16 to 24 with the
experiences, education, training, and support needed to become productive members of society with a heart to
serve and positively impact the community around them. In a nurturing environment, CommunityU provides
training and support in the areas of team work and life skills, personal and cultural development, education, and
job readiness.
POSITION INFORMATION:
This is a full-time position that includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:
 Facilitate, supervise, and transport participants during program activities, including:
 Natural resource management field work and other “green” job service projects
 Hawaiian cultural activities, including oli protocol, papa kuʿiʿai, etc.
 Group discussion activities and workshops in personal development
 Trainings and classes in life skills and job readiness
 Field trips and tours that broaden participants’ horizons
 Provide a safe, structured, accountable, and nurturing environment for CommunityU participants
 Mentor CommunityU participants and encourage them to reflect on their character, skills, and behaviors
in order to assist them with making positive life choices and successful transitions into adulthood
 Assist with intake and assessment, check-ins, support service coordination, exit process, and alumni
tracking and follow-up as needed
 Assist program coordinator with organizing logistics for program activities and communicating with work
and field trip sites and partner agencies
 Collect data to demonstrate program impact and the value of CommunityU participants' service
 Assist with program outreach and recruitment, which may include presentations at schools and other
organizations and attendance at community events
 Other duties as assigned
AVAILABILITY:
There are currently two (2) team leader positions available on the island of Oʿahu, with the potential for
additional positions. Currently positions are based out of Kupu’s Kewalo Basin Training Facility (Net Shed) located
in the Kakaʿako/Ala Moana area, however the central meeting site is subject to change.

*Living allowances are subject to taxes and are paid bi-weekly over the length of the program. Should, in special cases, the
position last less than the full term, the living allowance will be prorated appropriately. Living allowances are awarded at the
above stated amount and are not dependent on hours worked.
PROGRAM DATES:
August 10 2015 – August 19 2016
APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Age - Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by August 10th, 2015 (due to AmeriCorps regulations and
rental car requirements). If you are between 16-20 years of age, please see the CommunityU
Intern/Member application.
2. Diploma – Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
3. Driver’s License – Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and have the ability to transport team in a
company-provided van and/or truck.
4. Citizenship - Applicants must be one of the following: a US Citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent
Resident Alien (due to AmeriCorps regulations).
5. Background Check/Driving History/Drug Test - Applicants are subject to a background check, review of
driver history, and a drug test. Results must meet Kupu’s terms.
6. Housing/Transportation - Applicants must have their own personal housing and transportation to and
from the Kewalo Basin Facility.
7. Physical & Behavioral Requirements - Due to the nature of this program, the physical and behavioral
demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully
perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable
individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
a. Able to work extended hours on steep, rugged terrain; under extreme hot and cold weather
condition
b. Able to hike long distances carrying a 20 lb backpack
c. Able to lift 30+ lbs, and operate basic hand tools (machetes, shovels, picks, etc)
d. Able to work and camp in remote locations with minimal facilities
e. Able to work closely, interact according to Kupu’s core values and expectations, and camp with a
small team for consecutive days
8. Availability – Must be available full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) for the duration of the
internship

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
It is preferred, but not required, that the applicant has the following:
 Experience working with under-resourced or at-risk youth/young adults
 Counseling, teaching, case management, or mentoring experience
 Outdoor work experience
 Bachelor’s degree

 Letters should be written by professional sources such as coaches, bosses, teachers, groups you’ve
volunteered with, church leaders, or anyone who has known you for at least a three months. Letters
should not be written by immediate family members or close friends.
 Letters of recommendation should address:
o The context in which the person writing the recommendation knows you
o Your personality, positive attributes, and work ethic
o How you have demonstrated maturity or leadership skills
o Why you make a good candidate for this position
 Letters should include the reference’s contact information, and should be no more than two pages in
length
