next 3 weeks, students at the UC will be introduced to the "Lake Harriet Summer 6!" reading program. Ask your kids about it and look for more details in the weeks to come. Contact UC Library with
questions.
Farewell Ms. Tarneka!!
Please join us as we celebrate 10 years of service!! On Thursday May 28th, 4-6:30P.M., we will have a potluck style finger food farewell for Ms. Tarneka. As Ms. Tarneka leaves us to focus on her health, we

LHCS Volunteers, thank you & invite
We have extraordinary LHCS volunteers! Over 500 volunteers have contributed their time and talents in 2015 to strengthen our school and LHCS community.
ALL LHCS volunteers, you are invited to attend the last all-school assembly at LC or UC, where there will be a brief recognition of your hard work and dedication. The students have also made a token of
appreciation for each and every one of you. Please consider attending the Lower Campus assembly (Tues, May 26, 2:30-3:00pm) or the Upper Campus assembly (Fri, May 29, 3:00-4:00pm). If you cannot
attend, please stop by either campus the last week of school to see a banner the kids made for you and pick up YOUR token of appreciation. Contact Gretchen with questions.
Baseball and Softball Winning Teams!
Congratulations to the Lake Harriet Dragons Boys Baseball team for winning first place as City Champions for the 2nd year in a row! And congratulations to the Lake Harriet Dragons Girls Softball team for a
great season and winning second place! We are proud of all of our student athletes!
Volunteer Help Needed
WE NEED YOU! Help your child's school by volunteering for the 2015-16 school year. Most of these roles have experienced advisors willing to hand off checklists and advice on how to accomplish the task.
We need to continue the great events that rely on volunteers.
This Sign Up Genius link takes you to a list of the events and needs we currently know of for the next school year: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e094badac2aa02-lake

EReader Grant awarded to Lower campus
Parent of K-3rd graders:
Congratulations! Your school has been selected to receive the two-year Arbordale Fun eReader® grant. This grant will give your school free access to all science and math picture book titles in the Arbordale
library in English and Spanish. This access is not only for all computers and tablets in the school, but also the code is provided to send home with students so families can read and do the activities together!
The license will expire on August 31, 2017 which will provide the school with access for two full academic years (2015/2016 and 2016/2017) and three summer reading periods.
The following schools have been awarded the grant for the state of Minnesota
Lake Harriet Lower
Royal Oaks Elementary
Stewartville Public Schools: Bonner Elementary
We understand that budget cuts have hit schools and their libraries. We also understand that many schools have discovered that young children tend to read more often on a device and appreciate
technology. We are hearing that many children who may be loath to read a printed book get excited about reading a book on a device. (But, of course, as publishers, we still offer the printed books too!) This
is a transition time for schools across the country. Schools and districts are struggling with issues even down to who selects the eBooks (IT departments or school media specialists?). As described in the
grant information, we are offering this grant to schools across the country with the hope and expectation to open a dialog about how schools are using eBooks (the good, the bad, and the ugly . . . )
Unlike the more common static PDF or ePub eBooks, our enhanced eBooks feature:
• Dual language selection between English and Spanish. We are working with a Chinese publisher to add Chinese to about 40 of our titles over the next year (hopefully). Language can be switched on
each page or read through in one language and then the other.
• Word highlighting and speed control (in both English and Spanish) has just been added to some of our newer titles and is being added to the “backlist” as fast as we can. This turns our “science and
math through picture books” into serious tools for learning to read and/or learning English or Spanish.
• Full screen display with a pop-up navigation bar
• Readers may select a “read to myself” (no audio, manual page turn) or “read to me” (audio and automatic page flipping).
• Unlimited simultaneous access means that every student can read the same book at the same time! Books don’t have to be “checked out” of the library one at a time.
• Usage data to help teachers and administers see how many books are read. Schools have the option of open access or student sign in to track individual students’ reading.
• Direct access to For Creative Minds non-fiction sections (FCM), cross-curricular teaching activities, book related quizzes (text, FCM and math), reading levels and standard alignments.
• Android and iPad access and functionality.
As you can imagine, we received many applications and it was a difficult decision on which school should receive the grant. We looked to reach schools with a wide range of socio economic-factors that would
affect the students’ learning. We looked for a variety of applicants from various positions within the schools: classroom teachers, administrators, librarians/media specialists, special education teachers,
bilingual/ESL teachers, reading/intervention teachers, science teachers/curriculum specialists, etc.

So Much More Than A Picture Book
We want all staff, students and families to take advantage of these free books. To access these books, Matt Barnes our parent volunteer web master has created a button for you to click on which is located
on the front page of our school’s web page. The button is below the calendar on the right side. It is labeled ___________________________.
Access from the school’s web page address, lakeharriet.mpls.k12.mn.us.
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Tilleson, Lower Campus Principal
The lost and Found is growing!!!!
This spring the flowers are blooming and the grass is growing and so is our LOST AND FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a friendly reminder that the Lower campus will have the items that are in the lost and found bagged up on June 5th and donated to a charity. So please stop by anytime between now and the last day
of school and look through the items. The Lower campus lost and found is located in the back hallway across from our art room.

Clothes Drive
Anishinabe Academy and Anne Sullivan schools In Minneapolis Public Schools share one building in the Seward Neighborhood. These schools both have a student population at 97% free/reduced lunch and
they need our help! They are in need of extra clothes to keep at the school nurse’s office for their students’ use.
Specifically, they are looking for new or gently used elastic band sweat/athletic pants and leggings for both boys and girls grades K – 8. As you are clearing out your kids' outgrown clothes this spring, please
consider donating them. They could also use socks and underpants (for 2nd grade – middle school girls) and underpants for boys, as well as t-shirts for girls.
If you are on a Target run or going to garage sales, please consider picking up some of these necessity items. A donation box will be available at the LHCS Upper Campus by the gym entrance. Thank you for
pitching in!
Lower Campus Field Day Rain Day Correction
The rain date for the lower campus field day was incorrectly printed on the letters that went home. The rain day (if needed) is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th. Sorry for the confusion. Carol Chase
Upper Campus Book Room VOLUNTEER NEEDED
Do you like organizing? Do you want to know what your kids are reading or get ideas for books they should read? If YES, you may be perfect for this gig! We are looking for a volunteer (or two) to spend 1
hr/wk in the Upper Campus Teachers' Book Room to organize, inventory, maintain a master list, and repair damaged books. Flexible hours and great training available. Please contact
[email protected] if interested. Thanks for considering!
Upper Campus Overdue Library Books!
Upper Campus students will be receiving notices this week if they have overdue library books. We want to recover as many books as possible so that students won't be stuck with fines at the end of the year.
PLEASE ask your child if he/she has received an overdue notice and, if so, encourage a rigorous search for the book(s). Oftentimes, students strongly believe a book has been returned but then it shows up
in the oddest places. Please contact me with any questions. Thanks for your help! Gretchen Lieving Upper Campus Library Coordinator [email protected]
