AIRPORT RESCUE FIREFIGHTER (I & II)
JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION SUMMARY
The airport rescue firefighter position is responsible to perform all operational and safety functions at
the airport during an assigned shift, operating within established guidelines and procedures.
Performs duties in the fire services area of assignment and airport operations.
Duties to include, but not limited to, responding to aircraft incidents, medical emergencies and fires
occurring on airport property; performing various inspections, airfield maintenance, and additional
duties as assigned. Personnel will receive on-the-job training in additional specialized areas in which
certification is sought. Ensures the compliance with the Federal Aviation Regulation requirements of
Part 139 and, TSR Part 1542.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The employee must complete each minimum job requirement in order to advance to the next fire
fighter skill level (See Table 1). A recommendation of advancement from the ARFF Chief must be
requested to the Airport Director for consideration.
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under direct supervision of an ARFF Training Officer and indirectly by the ARFF
Chief, the Assistant Airport Director and the Airport Director.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A. Ensure the airport is effectively and efficiently operated in a safe and secure manner and in the
best interest of the general public by maintaining constant awareness of all facilities and
activities on the airport property affecting tenants and the general public in accordance with all
established rules, regulations and criteria of federal and local governments and other policies.
B. Responsible to maintain compliance with all aspects of the Airport Certification Manual (ACM).
Duties include but are not limited to:

Daily inspections of the airfield identifying any discrepancies, issuing proper notifications,
and ensuring a proper resolution.

Monitor construction and maintenance activity to ensure compliance with Part 139 and Part
77 standards. Represents Airport Operational interests in regard to airfield construction and
maintenance projects in and around the airfield. Tasked with opening and closing of
pavements and other sections of the airfield.

Issues appropriate NOTAMs and field condition reports.

Conducts required initial and annual recurrent Part 139 training with MCAA personnel and
contractors of the Authority

In accordance with TSR 1542, assists with the compliance of the Airport Security Program.
Monitors airfield and terminal areas enforcing the MCAA Rules and Regulations and take
corrective actions when necessary.

Assists Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Airport Security Coordinator
(ASC) with terminal and airside security and other security incidents. Coordinates with the

ASC, local law enforcement, United States Secret Service, and FBI on matters of security
and safety necessary for special events, activities, and for the arrival of visiting dignitaries.

Initiates notification to Building Maintenance and Airfield Maintenance when discrepancies,
problems, and repair issues are identified.

Department of Public Safety, other Board departments, and the public
J. Ability to attend continuing education classes to assure minimal standards are met
K. Ability to read, write and speak English in a manner which is understandable/discernable to
others in the current work force

O. Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds from the ground to waist level and show proper lifting technique
P. Ability to use and control all power tools for various operations including, but not limited to, fire
axe, gas powered circular saw, pike pole and hooligan bar
Q. Ability to complete airport research/administrative projects as assigned
R. Ability to maintain familiarity with Federal, State, and Local aviation rules and regulations
S. Ability to drive large fire rescue apparatus and operate pumping equipment.
T. Perform other duties as assigned by the ARFF Training Officer or the ARFF Chief.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge in Airport Operations

Completed an Advanced ARFF Training Class

Familiar with ICS FEMA courses

College level education in the following subjects: Fire Science, Emergency Management,
Emergency Medical Services, Airport Operations or any other related fields of study.
Must be capable of passing an FBI criminal history records check per Title 49 CFR Part 1542. Must
pass a pre-employment drug test and all subsequent random drug tests conducted during
employment.
Must complete a probationary period of up to 90 days prior to attending Basic 40 hour ARFF School,
all expenses paid by Employer. Upon completion of Basic 40 hour ARFF School, must be willing to
sign an 18 month training agreement.
