UNH STEM Teachers Collaborative programs
STEM TEACHERS COLLABORATIVE Degree Programs and Teacher Opportunities
M.Ed. in Educational Studies: Online
Master of Education with STEM Focus
Launching in May 2015, UNH will offer an on-line Master of Education degree program
with an option to concentrate in STEM. Not just for teachers, this M.Ed. provides a solid
educational foundation for professionals in business, educational research organizations,
public policy institutes, and state and national departments of education. More information
at https://online.unh.edu/med.
STEM Discovery Lab: Manchester Campus
STEM Discovery Lab
Teachers participate in intensive short-term summer institutes, followed by schoolembedded, focused professional learning that builds competency-based assessment into
their curriculum. Example programs are STEM Foundations for elementary school
teachers and Design-Make-Code for middle school teachers. These experiences are
integrated with obtaining advanced STEM credentials in both formal and informal settings
through micro-credentials and enhanced STEM certificate programs. More information at
http://manchester.unh.edu/outreach/stem-discovery-lab.
Master of Science for Teachers: Durham Campus
Master of Science for Teachers (MST) in Mathematics
The UNH MST in Mathematics Program is a graduate degree program designed primarily
for experienced teachers of secondary school mathematics. It is possible to enroll in MST
courses without enrolling in the MST degree program and MST courses typically satisfy
content area requirements in teacher certification programs. Note, however, that MST is a
degree program in mathematics - it is not a teaching degree and it does not grant
teaching certification or licensure. More information at http://math.unh.edu/graduate/teach
Scholarship Program for Future Teachers: Durham Campus
Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program
Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Robert Noyce Teacher
Scholarship Program provides scholarships, stipends, and programmatic support to
recruit and prepare undergraduate and graduate STEM majors and professionals to
become teachers in grades 5-12 for high need schools and districts.

Professional Development for K-‐12 Teachers STEM Programs: Durham Campus
Advancing Science
Provides teacher training to science and mathematics teachers in New Hampshire, and
offers an instrument loan program for teaching molecular biology, spectroscopy, molecular
modeling, and chromatography. More information at www.leitzelcenter.unh.edu, Joan and
James Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education.
GEOChem Program
With support from the Dreyfus Foundation, this 2-year program
is designed to provide enrichment in geochemistry for high
school chemistry teachers. The program consists of academic
year workshops and classroom support from a UNH graduate
student. More information at www.leitzelcenter.unh.edu, Joan
and James Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and
Engineering Education.
Kids Eager for Engineering Programs with
Elementary Research-based Science (Keepers) SM
KEEPERS for TeachersSM is a weeklong professional development experience for K-8
teachers, offered in conjunction with KEEPERS for Kids. Teachers work with UNH STEM
education experts to set up hands-on, minds-on challenges for campers entering grades.
2-5. More information at www.leitzelcenter.unh.edu, Joan and James Leitzel Center for
Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education.
Research Experiences for Teachers and
Undergraduates (RET)
Funded by NH EPSCoR, and offered in partnership with the Leitzel Center,
this program helps educators to develop the skills needed to raise awareness of STEM
career fields and to introduce the process of scientific inquiry to middle and high-school
students. More information at http://www.epscor.unh.edu/, New Hampshire EPSCoR.
Research Experiences for Teachers of
Engineering (RETE)
Funded by the National Science Foundation's RISE program, RETE is an intensive
summer research experience for middle- and high-school teachers, pre-service teachers,
and community college teachers with a particular focus on STEM learning. More
information at www.leitzelcenter.unh.edu, Joan and James Leitzel Center for
Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education.
SUN to ICE
Sun to Ice is an NSF-funded UNH research project investigating extreme solar events and
their effects on Earth through detailed studies of each process in the chain from Sun to ice.
As the education and outreach partner on the project, the Leitzel Center brings intensive
STEM professional development to high school physics, chemistry, astronomy, and Earth
and physical science teachers, pairing them with Sun to Ice researchers or collaborators to
explore specific research topics. More information at www.leitzelcenter.unh.edu, Joan and
James Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education. UNH Interoperability Lab (IOL)
The IOL tests conformance and interoperability of networking and data communication
devices for some of the biggest names in the industry. The offer paid employment for UNH
students seeking industry work experience and for pre-service teachers seeking technical
experience. Teachers learn real-world skills that transfer to the classroom, including cutting
edge technology in data communications and development of curriculum for the K-12 STEM
community. IOL also offers K-12 educational workshops and summer internship s for high
school students. More information at https://www.iol.unh.edu/students UNH Tech Camp for Teachers
Tech Camp for Teachers runs concurrently with Tech Camp, a 2-week summer camp for
students entering grades 7& 8 and 9 & 10. Students explore electrical, mechanical,
aerospace, biomedical, and naval engineering, robotics and computer technology.
Engineeristas is a 1-week camp specifically for girls. Campers participate in field trips
interacting with numerous engineers engaged in their work. More information at
http://ceps.unh.edu/unhtechcamp. UNH College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.
STEM Programs: Statewide
UNH Cooperative Extension
Through 4H and other programs, Cooperative Extension offers
formal and informal programs for STEM teachers to support their
integration of engineering and science practices into the
classroom. For example, an intensive Inquiry Teaching Methods 7-session course is offered
during the academic year. More information at http://extension.unh.edu/,
Annual STEM Education Summit
UNH will host an annual statewide forum for K-12 STEM educators on professional
development topics that teachers identify as timely, such as innovative practices, student
learning, NGSS, common core and much more.
The first summit, “Science Research in the Classroom” will be held on May 30, 2015 on the
UNH campus in Durham. To register, go to http://leitzelcenter.unh.edu/.
