Experience Faith • Experience Excellence Saints Alive A newsletter of Lima Christian School Volume 20, Issue 2 • March 2015 Special jeans day laced with generosity Blue jeans typically conjure images of cowboys and care-free attitudes. Those at LCS have turned the popular attire into an opportunity to bless others. On the second Wednesday of every month students and staff can wear blue jeans and T-shirts if they donate $1 or more to a specified cause. Dubbed Casual for a Cause, the day allows those at LCS to bless others by doing something as simple as wearing a pair of blue jeans. “We started the program because we knew that everyone enjoys dressing down once in a while,” Principal Todd Steltz said. “We wanted to add another [dress down] day to the monthly calendar, but we wanted it to have a purpose and mean something.” Mr. Steltz introduced the simple fund raiser to LCS last year. It is similar to a program he participated in while teaching in Rhode Island. Causes, which are announced the week before the Casual for a Cause day, range from Christian organizations to people in need. Campus Target, an organization that focuses on sharing the Gospel in Asia, was the focus of September’s Casual for a Cause day. Other benefactors so far this year have been Pure for God, New Yorkers for Family Research, a recently widowed mother Continued on page 3 Saints Coach Cindy Clymo recognized for rare feat What are Washington and Sulley doing at LCS? Continued on page 9 Prayer & Blessings, Principal’s Message Seeking the presence of God is a worthy goal In this edition of the Saints Alive, I would like to continue with the theme of practicing the presence of God that I wrote about in the last edition. In order to do this, I would like to share the following excerpt from the book The Practice of the Presence of God with Spiritual Maxims by Brother Lawrence: “There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God. Those only can comprehend it who practice and experience it; yet I do not advise you to do it from that motive. It is not pleasure which we ought to seek in this exercise; but let us do it from a principle of love, and because God would have us. “Were I a preacher, I should, above all other things, preach the practice of the presence www.amazon.com of God; and were I a director, I should advise all the world to do it, so necessary do I think it, and so easy, too. “Ah! knew we but the want we have of the grace and assistance of God, we should never lose sight of Him -- no, not for a moment. Believe me; make immediately a holy and firm resolution nevermore wilfully to forget Him, and to spend the rest of your days in His sacred presence, deprived, for the love of Him, if He thinks fit, of all consolations. “Set heartily about this work, and if you do it as you ought, be assured that you will find the effects of it. I will assist you with my prayers, poor as they are.” Wow! I am greatly challenged by these words, as I trust you are as well. May we never lose sight of Him here at Lima Christian School -- no, not for a moment! For example, we knew the Mexico mission trip was coming up, so we decided it would be a good time to do a Casual for a Cause for that event.” More than $1,375 has been raised so far this school year just by donning a pair of blue jeans. Saints Alive • 5 Spirit Week Festivities Pair Day M Spirit Day 6 • Saints Alive Blast From the Past Day Movie Character Day Pajama Day Saints Alive • 7 Mission Moment Trip to Uganda changes many lives By Julia Graves, eighth grader This past summer I had a lifechanging experience. I was able to go to Uganda with Uganda Water Project (UWP). I traveled with people from our church (Lima Baptist), several other churches, the UWP staff, and one person close to my heart -- my dad. I loved having this experience with him. The purpose of the trip was to check on tanks that UWP had already installed, check on new sites for future tanks, and to bond with the people in the villages. One of the villages we were able to visit was Kauga. This village had a tank located at the school, which we needed to check on. While there I met a wonderful girl (Gret) and her family. Gret and I connected immediately, and in my heart I know there was a bond between us. While at this village we checked on the tank and visited her school (Winners Academy). She was able to show me around her village. We enjoyed singing together, laughing, and playing games. It amazes me how God can bring hearts together from across the world. I was able to show her my Kindle and read her family stories, and they were able to show me the heart of Uganda. I came ready to help a village with their tank and left with a friend of the heart that I hope one day to see again. Another special time I experienced was seeing our family’s Compassion Child, Aaron. Before going to Uganda, I had seen him in pictures and wrote letters, but it still seemed a little unreal. When one-room hut. I knew he had siblings, but to see them and hug them made our relationship so real. My dad and I were able to see the goat that we bought for them. It had recently had a baby. We gave Aaron and his family Julia with Gret, left, and her Compassion Child brother Aaron, below “ It amazes me how God can bring hearts together from across the world.” we first met we were both a little shy. We quickly warmed up to each other, and it was amazing to see how God had brought our hearts together from across the world to meet face to face. During our visit we were able to visit his school and see the school program that Compassion provides for him. We also went to his parents’ house. Seeing all of his siblings was really amazing. There are seven people living in a little toys, school items, and food. To spend the day with my little “Ugandan brother” was life changing. I have continued to write him. I have no idea when I will see him again, but I know somewhere under this same moon is a piece of my heart and family. Continued on page 9 Kenyan believers understand bounty of Jesus 8 • Saints Alive “It was an unbelievable experience!” Mrs. Long said. “I traveled a mile into the heart “ When I asked for prayer requests, they simply said that when we have Jesus, we have everyting. “ Last summer, third grade teacher Beth Long, along with two other people from her church, went to Nairobi, Kenya, to visit Pastor George and his wife, Tina. Pastor George was Mrs. Long’s interpreter the previous year when she participated in the Hand of Hope Mission Trip, where she preached to 5,000 people throughout the week. Mrs. Long had the privilege of preaching in Pastor George’s church during her most recent trip. She also led a women’s group. Mrs. Long’s church sent 270 pairs of new shoes for his congregation. During home visits in the Kuriba Slum, Mrs. Long had the privilege of sharing hope with individual families by presenting crosses along with the shoes. of a potentially dangerous area where very few white people go. We witnessed extreme poverty and gracious hospitality. Families sacrificed greatly to give us a cup of tea with milk and brown sugar. One man and his nine-year-old daughter walk fourteen miles round trip to worship with other believers because they can’t afford bus fare. When I asked for prayer requests, they simply said that when we have Jesus, we have everything.” May this be our heart’s desire in America. --B. Long Creativity shines in LCS hallways One of the LCS Student Council’s most popular competitions is the annual hall decorating rivalry when students in grades seven through twelve show off their creativity by turning the halls into unusual settings. This year’s hallways took passersby into the sea, by a water fall, through Candy Land, past a tornado, and into the Disney movie Frozen. Uganda Coach Clymo Continued from page 8 God is in control of the details of our lives. He knew I was going to Uganda last August. As Americans we step out in faith on trips like these, and God blesses us in such unexpected ways. We get to meet amazing people. The next time you are in a crisis or even if life is moving on, remember God is all-powerful. He is at work in the details of your life, both here in our world on this side of the ocean and the other. He wants to bless us as we bless others and step out in faith, so go ahead, step out, and I promise you will be blessed! Continued from page 1 She returned to her coaching duties in 2013 and continues to mentor the girls. “Cindy is one of those people in my life that has just always been there,” Morgan Pagano said recently. Morgan is one of Coach Clymo’s assistant coaches. She is also a former Lady Saint who played for Coach Clymo. “I could say a lot about her...about her generosity, about her commitment, about the way she sticks by ‘her people’ no matter what,” Miss Pagano continued. “I will, however, stick to basketball, and say that some of the most influential and fun moments of my life happened with Cindy as a coach. She led my high school team to our 3PEAT, and as fun as it was to win, it was even more fun to learn how to play together and make memories that have and will last a lifetime. “Transitioning from playing for her to coaching with her was easy, since she is the one who taught me the game of basketball. She is a great coach because she invests in the team as well as her assistants. She plays up everyone’s strengths and makes everything a team effort, all while ensuring that Christ remains the center and focus. Cindy is a coach anyone can play for, she is easy to coach with, and it is no surprise that she has won 100 games in her career. I’m a proud Cindy Clymo fan.” LCS athletic director Kari Bogart agreed, adding, “We appreciate all the heart and soul she has poured into our girls.” Saints Alive • 9 Senior Basketball Players Tyler Vasko Jacob Klingensmith Jon Raub Jacob Moose Zach Legters 10 • Saints Alive Savannah Butters Allison Hall Tori Wilson Lauren Moose Abby Werner Jennifer Moose Saints Alive • 11 Saints Alive • Lima Christian School • A ministry of Lima Baptist Church 1574 Rochester Street Lima, NY 14485 585.624.3841 • www.limachristian.org NON-PROFIT ORG.
