Sunday 5 April 2015: EASTER SUNDAY
Collect
Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son
overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we,
being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to
whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and
in all eternity. Amen.
A reading from Isaiah
Isaiah 25. 6-9
On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a
feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines
strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all
peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever.
Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his
people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said
on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.
This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

A reading from Acts of the Apostles
Acts 10. 34-43
Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality,
but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to
him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus
Christ – he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in
Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth
with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all
who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that
he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a
tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the
people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with
him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to
testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the
prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of
sins through his name.’

Glory to you, O Lord
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and
Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the
first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been
saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the
tomb?’ When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had
already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed
in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them,
‘Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He
has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his
disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him,
just as he told you.’ So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and
amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.

ELECTORAL ROLL
The new Electoral Roll is now on display at the back of the Cathedral. If you wish to
be on the Electoral Roll and have not yet filled in a form this year then please pick
one up at the back of the Cathedral and place it in the box. The Electoral Roll will
continue to be updated on a weekly basis and will be on display for the next three
weeks prior to the Annual Vestry meeting.
Please speak with Helen Patterson, or one of the churchwardens if you would like
further details.
CATHEDRAL SHOP
Several volunteers have recently had to drop out due to ill health or family
commitments and we urgently need replacements. If you could spare a couple of
hours (weekly, fortnightly or monthly) – mostly on Tuesdays but there are some
other slots – please ring Pam Barlow, 02920 652519.
Copies of Bishop David Wilbourne’s new book The Helmsley Chronicles are on sale
in the shop at £10 with profits going to the Cathedral. Described by the author as a
celebration of rural and church life, as well as a remedy for the uncertainties of the
modern world, The Helmsley Chronicles is “funny and inspiring” (Archbishop John
Sentamu) and “at times deeply moving” (Archbishop David Hope)
CONFIRMATION
Children’s Confirmation Classes will resume on Wednesday 15th April. Candidates’
Profiles need to be completed by 15th April at the latest. The Confirmation rehearsal
will be on Wednesday 22nd April at 4.10-5.10pm.
MERBECKE CHOIR
The Merbecke choir is required to sing the 11am Choral Eucharist on Sunday 12 th
April (Low Sunday). The rehearsal will be on Friday 10th April, 6.30pm in Prebendal
House. Please could you let Canon Holcombe know if you are able to sing.
FOOD FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
Thank you for your continuing support for the collection of dried goods such as
breakfast cereal and sugar, tinned and dried food (pasta, rice, lentils, tins of
tomatoes, tinned fish, corned beef etc.) for asylum seekers.
Please bring goods to Prebendal House on 12th April. New supporters welcome!
LENT LUNCHES
The Lent Lunches were very well attended again this year. Many thanks to everyone
who supported and to the hosts: the Mothers’ Union, Shop Committee, Kath
MacDonald and friends, Cantonian High School Class 12/13 JWT and to the
Bellringers. The lunches raised over £800 for Christian Aid this year.

PIANO RECITAL
On Saturday 18 April, there will be a free lunchtime recital at 1.15pm given by
Elizabeth Preece, a final-year Music student at Cardiff University. The recital will
include music by Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy. All welcome, retiring collection.
