Badminton Scholarships at Loughborough
Badminton Scholarships at Loughborough
Loughborough University offers a unique environment to develop in sport whilst gaining a prestigious
degree. The Loughborough badminton programme has a high performance squad for those with
international experience and a commitment to succeeding in badminton. High Performance Coach
Mike Adams gives individual attention within a structured group setting to squad members which we
believe is paramount to realising potential.
Each year Loughborough University invests over a million pounds in performance sport, and a million
pounds in facility use for students. Thanks to this investment, all squad members receive expert
coaching, access to our world class facilities, heavily discounted Powerbase membership, strength
and conditioning training, and sports science and sports medicine support.
The squad is made up of singles and doubles specialists, and train around 10 times, up to 20 hours,
a week. They compete at many Open tournaments throughout Europe and world wide, as well as in
the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competitions.
In addition to the substantial support we offer to all members of the performance squad, sports
scholarships offer financial support to help the most talented squad members balance their finances.
Three levels of scholarship are available:
Tier 1 offers between £2,000 and £3,500, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a
further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 50
world ranking. We would look to offer up to £5,000 for exceptional candidates.
Tier 2 offers between £1,000 and £2,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a
further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 100
world ranking.
Tier 3 offers between £500 and £1,000, plus Powerbase and Club membership (worth around a
further £250). To be considered for this level of support, applicants would need to have a top 8 U19
or top 10 senior England (or equivalent standard) national placing.
The above criteria are a guide only. Reaching these levels is not a guarantee that an application will
be successful, and naturally we reserve the right to amend the criteria at any time. An applicants’
attitude and commitment to Loughborough Sport is also taken into account.
A student club runs alongside the performance squad, and there are a further 4 groups in addition to
the performance squad. These range from Shadow, who border the performance squad and are
predominantly national or high county standard players, down to Recreational where members may
just want the odd game. All play in local leagues and some BUCS competitions.
