Principal’s Report
Exams
Last week was very busy with exams being held for Years 10 &11 and
practice exams for Year 12. Staff are now in the process of correcting all the
exams.
iLEAP
Last Wednesday testing took place for the iLEAP program for Year 7
students in 2016. If there are any students who missed out on sitting for the
test we will be holding a supplementary test early Term 3.
Music Trivia Night
This Friday, 12th June the Music Academy are holding a Trivia Night in G Block at 7.30pm.
Book your tickets at http://www.trybooking.com/BEIM or purchase at the door. BYO food/
snacks/drinks. We will be organizing games on the night so bring some gold coins. A great
time to be had so come along and join us.
Year 10 Work Experience
All Year 10 students will be engaged in work experience from next Monday 15th June to Friday
26th June. We wish them well in their chosen fields during the next two weeks. During their
work experience staff members will be visiting them.

Out of Uniform Day
On Friday, 26th June we will be holding an Out of Uniform Day. During period 3 there will be a
celebration assembly and wellbeing activities will be held during period 4. The focus is on
resilience, but in particular on the importance of humour. A reminder to all families that the
last day of term, Friday 26th June is an early finish of 2.30pm.
Curriculum Day - Monday 13th July
Monday 13th July, first day of Tem 3 will be a pupil free day as staff will be involved in
Curriculum Meetings. Students will resume on Tuesday 14th July.

NEW FASHION FACILITIES AT RMIT – RMIT has just
launched as $8 million fashion hub at the Brunswick
campus. It features new design studios, specialist machine
rooms, an interactive lecture theatre and lounge spaces.
RMIT Brunswick offers an Associate Degree in Fashion and
Textiles Merchandising, Certificate IV in Fashion and
Textiles Merchandising, an Associate Degree in Fashion
Design and Technology, and the Bachelor of Fashion
(Design Technology). Check out the Brunswick campus and
courses at RMIT Open Day on Sunday 9 August, 10am – 4pm.
The 4-year B. Fashion Design is taught partly at the City
campus and partly at the Brunswick campus.
NOTE: Some similar fashion courses are available at
Holmesglen (City campus), Box Hill Institute and Kangan
Institute (Richmond campus).
EARLY OFFER ‘ASPIRE’ PROGRAM AT LA TROBE
UNIVERSITY – The Aspire program, launched in 2014, saw
1,100 students receive early offers for courses at La Trobe
for 2015. Many students work hard to make positive
changes in their schools and communities through
volunteering, and La Trobe wants to recognise these
efforts. La Trobe has announced a working partnership with
the Country Fire Authority and the Duke of Edinburgh
program. These partnerships reflect the desire of La Trobe to
collaborate with people and organisations that share the
vision of making a positive difference, and will help recognise
the impact students are making in their communities. More

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ACU) has six
campuses, two of which are in Victoria, in Melbourne
(Fitzroy) and in Ballarat. It has over 33,000 students
nationally, with over 10,000 in Melbourne. It offers higher
education courses and VET courses (through ACUcom).
In 2016 some new higher education degrees will be on
offer. From 2016 the Bachelor of Biomedical Science will
be offered in double degrees with B. Applied Public Health,
B Laws and B. Business Administration. These will give
students with broad interests the opportunity to study those
interests, while potentially increasing career opportunities.
From 2016 the B. Exercise and Sports Science degree will
be a pathway to the post graduate Masters in Clinical
Exercise Physiology and Masters in High Performance in
Sport. The former B. Sport and Health Science will be
replaced with the B. Physical Activity and Health Science.
This will be a pathway to the Masters in Teaching, or to the
two Masters programs available from the B. Exercise and
Sport Science (above).
As noted in a previous edition, ACU will offer the B.
Physiotherapy at the Ballarat campus in 2017.
Prerequisites are at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any
other English and a study score of at least 25 in one of
biology, chemistry or physics (to be confirmed). NOTE: EAL
refers to English as an Additional Language (this usually
relates to international students).
ACU offers the Early Achievers Program (EAP),
recognising that students have more to offer than academic
results. ACU will consider contributions made to the
community through school or workplace, community
organisations and cultural and/or religious groups.

PUBLIC HEALTH CAREERS NIGHT -This is a great
opportunity to get tips and advice from those already working
in the field. The evening will consist of short presentations
about the careers of various speakers, followed by a panel
discussion and question time. The evening is put on by the
Public Health Association of Australia, the Australian
Health Promotion Association and the Australasian
Faculty of Public Health Medicine.

BOX HILL INSTITUTE’S CERTIFICATE IV IN DISABILITY –
Box Hill has partnered with AMAZE Victoria to co-deliver the
Certificate IV in Disability. It is the only course that offers
the Support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder unit,
an area which is growing in the industry. Negotiations are
also in process to offer students the opportunity to undertake
Sign Language (Auslan) Level 1 as a part of this course.
The course provides access to industry, guest speakers and
targeted skills development sessions (eg The Road to
Empowerment – drama therapy techniques). The course is
offered 2 full days per week. Job placement in the industry is
high for graduates.
OBTAINING AN APPRENTICESHIP – Well and truly gone are
the days when a 15 year old could easily obtain an
apprenticeship. The employer would assist with transport to
the work site, would teach the apprentice from scratch, and the
apprentice would often leave school with little idea of what the
trade involved. Nowadays, employers generally prefer the new
apprentice to have completed Year 12 (either VCE or VCAL),
be at least 18 years old, with a driver’s licence and a
vehicle, and to have completed a pre-apprenticeship in the
trade involved. Sometimes the apprentice will have completed
the pre-apprenticeship while at school in a VET program (eg
VET Building and Construction), or alternatively they will
have completed it at a VET provider after completing Year 12
(taking about four months). Pre-apprenticeship courses are
available in many trades such as automotive, carpentry,
electrotechnology, furniture making and plumbing.
VET Retail Make-Up and Beauty and Hairdressing
Tasters
Congratulations to the Year 9 and 10 Hairdressing Taster
students who have just recently completed a taster program
in VET Make-Up and Beauty, and Hairdressing. The Macleod
College community are invited to visit our Salon on Tuesdays
to Fridays.
Once these requirements have been met, the would-be
apprentice must find an employer willing to take them on to
complete the apprenticeship. These can sometimes be found
among friends, relatives, sports associates and so on.
Alternatively, Group Training Companies employ many
apprentices. See: www.grouptraining.com.au. It is also
interesting to note that many apprentices these days are well
over 18 years; they are quite commonly well into their 20’s,
after leaving another career.
Year 12 Tertiary Information Service (TIS)
On Wednesday 27th May 2015 all Year 12 students attended
TIS at La Trobe University. Students had the opportunity to
listen to information about options for 2016 and collect material
from all providers. All Year 12 students will be allocated
interview times in the first week of September to discuss their
plans for 2016.

DRAW FOR NEPAL
As you are aware Nepal is suffering greatly after the recent
earthquakes. In response to this students from Grade 1 to 11
have created small images that have been kindly donated by
to fundraise for the people of Nepal.
These aspiring works are filled with generosity, affirmations
of kindness and empathy. This is a fabulous opportunity to
create community connectedness and for students to think
about and contribute to the wellbeing of others.
They will be exhibited in a group exhibition in the main school
foyer and at The Divine at YaYas café in Macleod in June.
You can support this wonderful exhibition by visiting the main
school foyer and Ya Yas in June and hopefully by making a
purchase. All works will be sold for $5 (or more if you wish).
Artworks in the school foyer go on sale after June 25th.
YaYas is currently selling them now.
WEP Student Exchange – Learn and Discover the World!
WEP Australia is a not-for-profit student exchange
organisation registered with the Education Departments in
NSW, QLD and VIC. Applications for short and long-term
programs commencing from November 2015 onward are
open now.
Students can choose from over 25 countries to live with a
volunteer WEP host family and attend an overseas high
school for a summer, semester or year. To request

World Vision Leadership Day
EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO LEAD THEIR
SCHOOLS IN STANDING FOR CHANGE
Macleod students won pic of the day for their photo,
showing a stand for change.
On Monday May 25th, I went with 6 students to the World
Vision Leadership Day in Melbourne. Several hundred
students from many schools in Victoria attended this event.
Students were given an insight into understanding inequality in
our world and encouraged to stand up against poverty and
injustice.
The students who attended will be organizing the promotion of
the 40 hour Famine at Macleod College.
Planet Shakers Lunch Program
The Planet Shakers lunch time program is here every Friday
for secondary students. Youth leaders from Planet Shakers
will be in the D block area at lunch time on Fridays. All
students are welcome .
Breakfast Club for Year 7 and 8 Students
It’s great to see students having breakfast. Please remind
your child that every Tuesday they are able to have breakfast
in B block from 8am to 8.45am. All year 7 and 8 students welcome.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School
Students with Disability
‘Collection Notice’
All schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic
schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent
Collection of Data on School Students with Disability this
year. The Data Collection is an annual count of the number
of students with disability receiving educational adjustments
to support their participation in education on the same basis
as students without disability.
All education agencies are now required under the Australian
Education Regulation 2013 to provide information on a
student’s level of education, disability and level of adjustment
to the Australian Government Department of Education and
Training.* Data will continue to be de-identified prior to its
transfer to the Australian Government Department of
Education and Training. No student’s identity will be provided
to the Australian Government Department of Education and
Training.
The collection of this information from states and territories
will inform future policy and program planning in relation to
students with disability.

Salvation Army: Red Shield Appeal
Thank you to the parents and students who
came and helped with the Red Shield Appeal
on Sunday May 31st. We had great weather
and a good response from the people in
Macleod. We collected nearly $900.00 for the
Salvation Army, a great effort. I was very
proud of the way students presented themselves.
Folio Preparation Workshops
Intensive, but enjoyable 2 and 3 day folio preparation
programs for year 11 & 12 students wishing to enter
university. Creative Arts program 29th and 30th June ($185)
and Future Design 29th, 30th June and 1st July ($195) at the
Bendigo Campus of Latrobe University. Accommodation and
meals included. On completion you will have the skills
required to build an impressive professional portfolio, and be
able to approach a university pre-selection interview with

Chaplaincy & Wellbeing Support Group
Vintage Fashion Night
A great night was had with about 45 people attending. The
VERB Youth Group did a terrific job of modelling (and had a lot
of fun!) and the trivia questions seemed to be enjoyed. Thanks
to those who contributed to the raffle and prizes, and also to
those who brought some food to share. It was great to have
the youth group leaders and parents assist as well.
