Spring 2015 - Mashpee Women
MASHPEE WOMEN’S CLUB Spring, 2015, Newsletter P.O. Box 1613 Mashpee, MA 02649 Web site: http://mashpeewomensclub.org/ Email: [email protected] Lisbeth Dineen, Editor Mashpee Women’s Club Mission Statement The mission of this Club is to bring all women of Mashpee and surrounding towns into a social environment, provide educational and recreational programs to the benefit of our members, and charitable programs to support our towns. The Club’s first meeting was December 9, 1997. The winter season was interminable. There were constant storms and record amounts of snowfall. Cape Cod, which historically has little snow, endured constant downfalls. We had to cancel our February luncheon! Spring has finally arrived but it is unfolding slowly. I think we are all ready to celebrate sunshine, warm temperatures and spring flowers. Despite the weather, the hearty members of the Mashpee Women’s Club have remained active, continuing their activities in the various clubs, our lunch and marathon bridge games, our new knitting club, the book clubs, solo and couples groups etc. We are looking forward to our spring luncheons and opportunities to gather and socialize after our long winter. Our April luncheon will be an open mic forum, during which some of our very talented members will display their talents. This had been originally scheduled for February but was postponed because of stormy weather. We had a similar program two years ago, and the feedback was overwhelming. The artistic, literary, and musical gifts as well as culinary talents were just amazing. April‘s program promises a similar experience. In May, we welcome the always entertaining and charming Bill Graham who will inspire us with his fashion update of “The Little Black Dress” and some of the latest wardrobe accessories. A note to you fashionistas, he usually comes with a number of extra items for purchase! In June, we have our annual fashion show sponsored this year by The Treasure Chest of Falmouth. If you haven’t been to this shop on Main Street in Falmouth, it is well worth the effort, especially if you have a special event coming up. Keep in mind the proceeds from the added ticket price funds our charities fund. We have a number of “Getting To Know You” speakers in the coming months including our MWC member Phyllis Sprout from Sprout Farms, Frank Lord from The Schoolhouse and Barbara Cotton from The Cape Cod Children’s Museum. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands is starting a new Site Base program at Quashnet Elementary! Melissa Ventola will describe the program at our April luncheon. “Bigs” will meet with their “Littles” once a week at the school for 45 mins during the day just during the school year. If you live or work close to the school and would like to participate in this great program, please contact her at 508771-5150 ext 104 or [email protected] for more information. We look forward to hearing about the latest news from all these local institutions. Behind the scenes, a committee of members has been working on our big fundraiser for Alzheimer’s services. A list of potential local sponsors and donors has been created and letters and presentations are scheduled to go out at the end of April. This is a very philanthropic and ambitious undertaking. It will involve much time and energy on the part of the committee but it is an important mission and will directly benefit two Mashpee organizations that provide direct help and support to Alzheimer’s patients and their families. They are Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services and Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod. We will continue you to update you in our newsletter and at our luncheons. In the meantime, enjoy the beauty of this season and I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming luncheons. Jean Boundy, President Lenore Abelson Margaret Donovan And welcome back to Susan Camerlengo Jane Murphy Margaret Sullivan! Laura Kuzia, MWC Membership and Directory Committee Welcome to the following new members who have joined the Mashpee Women’s Club since the Winter newsletter: A huge part of the Mashpee Women’s Club’s mission is charitable support to our local towns. Did you know that in our 16-year history, the MWC has donated nearly $200,000 to community projects? Check out page 32 in our 2015 directory for information on our many charitable projects. In order to continue to support this mission, we will be putting on two terrific fund raising events in 2015: June 16: Move over Milan! The Mashpee Women’s Club presents Sumptuous Fashion Treasures for the Cape Cod Woman. Our annual fashion show and fund raiser this year will feature fashions from The Treasure Chest in Falmouth. Proceeds from the event will help fund the charities the MWC supports throughout the year. Page 2 The Treasure Chest is an upscale ladies boutique proudly showing such designers as Comfy, Andrea Lieu, Bryn Walker, Samuel Dong, Sympli, Joseph Ribkoff as well as many others. So whether it's a casual Cape Cod wedding, a black tie affair in the city, or something comfy to relax in, you'll get dressed at the Treasure Chest. If you are interested in modeling at the event, please contact Maryann Piccirilli (contact info in the directory). Everyone who attends a fashion event needs to leave with a glam bag, and our fashion show attendees will be no exception! Mashpee Women’s Club Newsletter Spring, 2015 More details will be coming in the very near future, but meanwhile, mark your calendars, get your friends involved, and join us! Tickets will go on sale shortly for $40 each, and they sell out very quickly so get yours as soon as you can! September 19: Join us at the Lanes Bowl & Bistro in Mashpee Commons! Get ready for A Night to Remember! The Mashpee Women’s Club is proud to announce information for our charity gala benefiting Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services and Alzheimer’s Family Support Center. Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services’ singular focus is to offer innovative care and programs provided with the utmost skill, compassion and respect. At the heart of all its services and programs lies its unwavering mission: to provide information, education and support for people with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia — and the families and professionals who care for them. The Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod’s mission is to provide free care consultation, counseling and support services to families living with dementia-related illness on Cape Cod. They are guided by the belief that no one should have to navigate Alzheimer's disease alone. With your help and support, you will not only enjoy an evening of fun and games but more importantly, you will have the opportunity to bring The Mashpee Women’s Club hosts a luncheon on the third Tuesday of each month. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for guests. Checks payable to the Mashpee Women’s Club should be mailed to Mashpee Women’s Club, P.O. Box 1613, Mashpee, MA 02649 to arrive at least 7 days before the luncheon. ********************** Page 3 much needed financial support to the more than 10,000 families on Cape Cod facing the ongoing challenges of Alzheimer’s and dementia related diseases. This Black Tie (optional) Gala will be held at the Lanes Bowl and Bistro in Mashpee Commons on September 19th, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. We’re planning an evening of good food, great drink, fun games, a silent auction, entertaining people, bowling, and best of all, the proceeds go to support terrific causes that deal with an illness that affects so many of us. Help us promote our event by wearing this great, one of a kind t-shirt around town as you go shopping, beach hopping, or just chilling out. They are available for a minimal cost of $10.00 each. Please contact Jeanne Dennis if you are interested in purchasing what will surely become a collector’s item! A key part of the gala will be a silent auction. Do you have an item to donate? Or a suggestion of a business that might be interested in contributing? Please let Suzi Rego know. Suzi Rego, the MWC fund raising chairperson, will be firming up details. One thing an event of this nature always needs are willing volunteers. Please let Suzi know if you are able to help. Her contact information is in the directory. Mark your calendar and stay tuned for continuous updates on this event. A segment at each monthly luncheon includes a five-minute “Getting to Know You” presentation prior to the luncheon program introducing a community speaker from a local organization or business. ********************** April 21: A revival of our popular “open mic” program. So many of us have stories worth sharing – events that have shaped our lives; activities in which we are involved; artistic or volunteer passions that are a key part of who we are. Six of our members will share their Mashpee Women’s Club Newsletter Spring, 2015 endeavors and passions. Join us to learn more about the amazing women in our club!! Our Getting to Know You speaker will be Phyllis Sprout, owner of Sprout Farm in Mashpee. In addition, Melissa Ventola of the Big Brother Big Sister organization will briefly describe a new program they will be offering. May 19: The Little Black Dress – UPDATED with Bill Graham! Graham is the owner of "Beautiful Things Ltd" in Salem, MA where he specializes in creative floral design, fashionable women's accessories, millinery and unique gifts. Our Getting to Know You speaker will be Frank Lord. Frank is president of the Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse Preservation Council Board of Trustees. Built in 1831 for less than $200, the Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse is now located at 13 Great Neck Road North in North Mashpee, Massachusetts. Appraisal staff from Eldred's, New England’s oldest established auction house and one of the top auction houses in North America, will be on-hand to evaluate items from the audience in an “Antiques Roadshow”-style event. There will be a $5.00 appraisal fee, which directly benefits the MWC. Do not bring any item that cannot be carried (e.g., furniture); instead, please take a photo of the larger items for the appraisal. Only one item per person, please. There will be time for only 25 appraisals, and preregistration is necessary. Please pre-register and provide a brief description of your item by July 7th to Maryann Piccirilli (contact information is in the directory) Page 4 August 18: Cape Cod Trivia with John Quesnel. June 19: MWC Annual Golf Tournament It looks like that white stuff that has been lurking far beyond a reasonable time is finally just a bad winter’s dream. Yes, ladies, the time has finally arrived -that time is Golf time!!! We are in the planning stages for the Mashpee Women’s Club annual golf tournament, which is scheduled for June 19th at the Holly Ridge Country Club. Mashpee Women’s Club Newsletter Spring, 2015 We are looking at the financial feasibility of renting extra carts to accommodate all those that want to ride. If we are unable to acquire extra carts, then all carts will be first-come, first-paid basis. This means those that request carts and send their checks in early will receive a cart. There will be no exceptions. Entry forms and further information will be available in May. Get those clubs out. Spring is really here!! Contact Suzi Rego if you have any questions (her contact information is in the directory). Check out our Facebook page for many more pictures of all our events! https://www.facebook.com/groups/mashpeewomensclub/ January 20: The January luncheon was well attended. The luncheon and speakers were great! Candy Costas presented SIX STEPS TO A STYLISH IMAGE AT ANY AGE. Candy showed us how, regardless of age, body type, or budget, you can look great and feel better with six simple steps. Candy Costas (l) and Candy's passion for style led Joann Perras (r) her to develop a fashion blog in 2013 (www.ginger-bred.net/blog), which offers fashion and lifestyle advice on a biweekly basis. Whether in a professional situation or in her personal life, she is widely known for her polish, standout style, and attention to detail. The Getting to Know You speaker was Joann Perras, who presented the Ideal Protein approach to weight loss. Joann is the Weight Loss Coach at Health Source Chiropractic and Progressive Wellness in Mashpee (mashpeeweightloss.com). Many thanks to Joyce Bachman and Barbara Dolbier for the beautiful centerpieces! February 17: The weather did us in! Our luncheon was one of many events in the area that was cancelled because of the seemingly never-ending snow. Page 5 March 17: We were taken on a photographic expedition to Sicily led by our own Serena LoPiccolo-Smith! Serena guided us through the cities and towns of Sicily as well as the smaller islands surrounding it. This wonderful tour let us see Sicily through its ancient history, its people, its Serena LoPiccolo-Smith food, and its incredibly beautiful vistas. Serena’s photographs were breathtaking, and included the Mosaics of Piazza Armerina and the Monreale Duomo, the white sandy beaches of Cala dei Turchi, and the prehistoric graffiti of the Grotta dell'Addaura as well as many wonderful foods representative of the region. Many thanks to Serena for an entertaining and informative talk! Our Getting to Know You speaker was Gail Chalifoux who leads the “Read to Me” program at K. C. Combs School. The program is a one-toone reading program for preschoolers, and is a wonderful way to pass on the love of reading Gail Chalifoux from an adult to a child. Volunteers are welcome to join! Please contact Gail at [email protected] for more information. The recipient of $95 from our 50/50 raffle was “Homeless Not Hopeless” of Hyannis, the mission of which is to educate about and advocate for the needs of the homeless community. Mashpee Women’s Club Newsletter Spring, 2015 And finally, many thanks to Debbie Gasior for the wonderful St. Patrick’s Day shamrock centerpieces! In addition to the activities that we do as a club to support our community, our members as individuals continue to go above and beyond to help our community become better! The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank sponsored a “Credit for Life” fair on April 8 at the Mashpee High School. The fair is a program that teaches youth financial management skills. Volunteers from many community groups including the Mashpee Women's Club helped make this a very successful day for the students. Thanks to the MWC members who participated: Jean Boundy, Martha Gallo, Linda Steele, Jeanne Dennis, Sue Riley, Joan Walker, Adrienne Guptil, Judy Kimber, Gail Jones, and Denise Dutson. An important part of our charitable mission is the 50/50 raffle that we hold at each monthly luncheon. The recipient of the 50/50 raffle is a Cape Cod charity suggested by our members. Any member can submit a suggestion for a charity to be included in the basket from which the name of the winning charity is pulled. If you have a charity you would like to suggest, please complete the following form and bring it to the next meeting or email the information to Janet Molloy (her contact information is in the directory). PLEASE NOTE: 1) The charity must be a Cape Cod charity; 2) THE FORM MUST BE FILLED OUT COMPLETELY IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DRAWING. Our group has been very active, even considering the winter weather we have all endured! Nine of us attended our first lunch at Windfall in Woods Hole. We have also gone to the Old Yarmouth Inn, Bobby Byrnes, Estia, and the Pilot House. On May 21, instead of lunch, we will be having dinner at Villagio’s. Eighteen women have joined the group, and typically between 7 and 14 attend any of our luncheons. I feel very fortunate to be chair of such a wonderful group of ladies! If you are interested in joining us, please contact me (my contact information is in the directory). We get together once a month for lunch and a great social time! Peggy Youdelman you will receive updates and postings as they are published. And don’t forget – if you read our postings, remember to hit “like”! Lisbeth Dineen, Facebook Administrator https://www.facebook.com/groups/mashpeewo mensclub/ The new Flower/Centerpiece Committee has been a great success this year! Several Mashpee Women’s Club members have volunteered to do the centerpieces for the tables at the past few monthly luncheons. They have been very creative, had lots of fun, and have done a wonderful job this year. We plan to continue with this new committee during the upcoming year. If anyone is interested in joining the committee there will be a sign up sheet at the luncheon on the table with name tags. When you sign up, you can pick the month you would like to help. The Committee Chairs will provide a theme for each month and will let you know how many centerpieces are needed for that month. Two or three members get together (typicaly at the Senior Center or their homes) and decide what they want to use to support the theme. A few days before the luncheon, they put the arrangements together. MWC pays for the supplies up to $15 for each table. This is a great way to get a little more involved in the MWC and have some fun. The commitment is only once or twice a year. If you have any questions please contact Laura Kuzia or Janet Molloy (their contact information is in the directory). If you want to join the Mashpee Women’s Club group on Facebook, just log into Facebook and do a search for the Mashpee Women’s Club or click on the link below. Then submit a request to join.
