Mashpee Women’s Club Mission Statement
The mission of this Club is to bring all women of Mashpee and surrounding towns into a social
environment, provide educational and recreational programs to the benefit of our members, and
charitable programs to support our towns. The Club’s first meeting was December 9, 1997.
The summer weather lasted throughout most of
September, and with October here, we enter the
clear, crisp days of autumn – the most beautiful
season on Cape Cod.
September’s luncheon this year at Popponesset
was a spectacular setting with the sun shimmering on
the endless blue ocean. Our new fiscal year started
on a robust note with nearly 80 members strong in
attendance.
Our “Night to Remember” fundraiser on
September 19 was a great success insuring a sizable
donation for our recipients, Hope Dementia and
Alzheimer’s Services and Alzheimer’s Family Support
Center of Cape Cod. I want to thank our members for
their support as well as the many friends of the MWC
and our local merchants and business owners. Their
generosity has been awe-inspiring. In particular, I
want to acknowledge the hard work of the gala
committee and co-chairs, Suzi Rego and Sue Riley.
The committee worked throughout the spring and fall,
first soliciting for donors, then auction items, and
finally in promoting ticket sales. True team work
“works” wonders! The creativity of our members was
evident in the auction items produced by them -- from
a hand crafted quilt, a cable knit sweater, a painted
table, a satin shawl, a framed poem from our noted
poet, an artist’s offer to paint a picture of one’s home
and a full course gourmet meal for eight provided in
one’s home! Additionally, desirable golf packages,
great overnight stays in Boston, on Martha’s Vineyard
and Nantucket and a week in St. Martin helped to
drive the bidding! There was a great variety in the
auction items which explains its success. The
transformation to The Lanes that night was through
the artistic efforts and talents of Janet Molloy and
Jeanne Dennis. The lush table draperies and floral
arrangements gave the trendy restaurant a most
elegant look, and yes, a number of members and
guests did bowl! The Program Booklet for the event
was beautifully designed and formatted by Lisbeth
Dineen.
We have some recent changes to the board. Due
to her demanding professional and personal
commitments, Linda Steele has resigned as vice
president. She will stay on the board as the Historian
and the Getting to Know You program chair. We are
very glad that Linda will continue to be with us and
wish her all the best. I am appreciative of Janet
Molloy for agreeing to fill the vacancy of vice
president.
It is very difficult job to find luncheon programs
that appeal to our members month after month! We
are very grateful for the hard work of Maryann
Piccirilli and Jeanne Trexler over the last two years
doing just that. We thank them for a job well done!
Taking over programs are Jeanne Dennis and Janet
Molloy. A warm welcome to Jocelyn Bradburn who
has assumed Charities, vacated by Janet, and to
Clare Nicholson who has taken on duties for name
tags in the membership group.
The “new member coffees” have been resumed
this fall with Cate Bearer recently hosting a group of
eight new members and a number of MWC board
members in her home. I want to thank Sigrid Howell,
Katherine Schwartz and Jean Trexler for renewing
this tradition – the informal and friendly format really
allows for members to connect and get to know each
other as well as to become more familiar with all the
activities of the our club. Subsequent coffees are
planned for October and beyond.
We welcome your thoughts and ideas for the
MWC. This is your club and should reflect the
interests of all parties. Please feel free to contact me
with your suggestions.

The Mashpee Women’s Club hosts a luncheon
on the third Tuesday of each month. The cost is
$20 for members and $25 for guests. Checks
payable to the Mashpee Women’s Club should
be mailed to Mashpee Women’s Club, P.O. Box
1613, Mashpee, MA 02649 to arrive at least 7
days before the luncheon. Luncheons are held
at the New Seabury Country Club at noon each
month unless noted differently.

donations for the Mashpee Food Pantry at every
luncheon. Cash donations preferred but
products are also always appreciated.

A segment at each monthly luncheon includes a
five-minute “Getting to Know You” (GTKY)
presentation prior to the luncheon program
introducing a community speaker from a local
organization or business.

October 20: Join us for a presentation and
demonstration by Williams Sonoma, plus Ellen
Moran, president of the Cape Cod Ballroom
Dancers, will be the Getting to Know You
Speaker. Cape Cod Ballroom Dancers (CCBD)
was established in January 1996 to enhance the
quality and quantity of ballroom dancing on Cape
Cod.
November 17: Hyannis Country Gardens
will be featured. Learn tricks to decorate for
the holidays! Our GTKY speaker will be Kristine
Callahan from Bridges by Epoch.
December 15: Join us to be entertained by
David Polansky. David’s music is frequently
humorous, sometimes serious, and always
clever and engaging. Loved by everyone from
preschoolers to grandparents, his songs have
been compared to those of Stephen Sondheim
and Tom Lehrer and have won numerous
awards including the coveted Artists' Foundation
Fellowship, Music City Song Festival, Sheet
Music Magazine Grand Prize, and others.

outstanding, the guests had a great time, and we
are very proud to say that we raised over
$19,600, and after all the bills have been paid,
we are grateful that we can donate $5,000 each
to the two wonderful organizations we chose to
support:

The Alzheimer’s Family
Support Center of Cape
Cod’s mission is to provide
free
care
consultation,
counseling and support services to families living
with dementia-related illness on Cape Cod. They
are guided by the belief that no one should have
to navigate Alzheimer's disease alone.

September 15: Pottery Barn. Our new program
committee (Janet Molloy and Jeanne Dennis)
hit a home run with the wonderful September
luncheon program. Held at the Popponesset Inn
on a beautiful, picture perfect Cape Cod
September day, it was a
wonderful combination of
great food, wonderful
company, and a super
presentation
from
Christina O'Sullivan and Lisa Ascii of the Pottery
Barn on how to transition our
decor from season to season.
They made it look so easy!!
And in many cases, it actually
is! Everyone I spoke with after
the program raved about it. Plus the
icing on the cake was the exquisite
view from the Inn -- just amazing.
The lovely centerpieces were
provided by Teri Sweatman and
Mary Lou Halloran. The 50/50 raffle
provided $121 to the Cape Cod
Times Needy Fund.
August 18: Cape Cod Trivia with
John Quesnel. Well, I had forgotten
how much fun playing trivia could
be! Many thanks go to guest MC
John Quesnel who facilitated a
great 3 rounds of trivia, and it was
John Quesnel
wonderful to be a part of the
Mashpee Minnows (the name of our team) who
kept us in the game, admittedly not in a high
place in the standings but definitely in the game
to the end! Answers to questions ranged from
the Boston Tea Party to Albert Finney to drinking
straws plus many more. Congratulations to the
Wash Ashores for their resounding win! Linda
Quesnel and Jeanne Dennis did yeoman's
work of scoring the entries and keeping track of
the winners.
Our Getting to Know You speaker was Barbara
Cotton, executive director of the Cape Cod
Children's Museum, who enthusiastically
updated us on current activities and future plans

for the museum. In the heavy rain we had last
week, over 1,200 people visited the museum in
one day! Barbara also kindly gave us two free
passes to the Museum which I am excited to say
I won in the raffle.
It was a privilege to have
Ashley Welch attend to accept
the $2,500 college scholarship
we awarded this year. Ashley
is a very articulate young lady,
and it was a pleasure hearing
Jean Boundy, Ashley her describe her goals for the
Welch, Janet Molloy future. She will be attending
BU.
Our 50/50 raffle provided $93 to the
Cape Cod Military Support Foundation
Inc. Thanks to Janet Molloy and Laura
Kuzia for providing the lovely
centerpieces. Just a lovely way to
spend the afternoon. Thanks to all who worked
to make it a success!

Antiques Appraisals ONCE
AGAIN, A GREAT LUNCHEON
PROGRAM! Thanks to our

John Schofield and Cod art and antiques appraisals
Leah Kingman from -- our own mini Antiques
Eldred's
Roadshow. Eldred's is New
England’s oldest established auction house and
one of the top auction houses in North America.
John Schofield, President of Eldred’s and
Director of the Asian Arts Department as well as
one of Eldred's auctioneers, and Leah Kingman,
head of European Decorative Arts, donated their
time so that we could have a great time!
The table in the front of the room was loaded with
treasures brought by our members. As Leah and
John estimated the value of the items, they also
provided wonderful historical anecdotes about
many of the pieces. Knowledgeable and
entertaining
-a
great
combination!

for providing the beautiful
centerpieces and to Sigrid
Howell for donating some of the
flowers from her garden! The 50/50 raffle raised

charity providing assistance to veterans in need.

Our new member welcome coffees
had been on hiatus for awhile, but
we are pleased to say that they
have recommenced. On September
24, Cate Bearer graciously opened
her home, and hostesses Sigrid
Howell and Jean Trexler with help from
Katherine Schwartz welcomed new members
Laura Lincoln, Clare Nicholson, Lana
Harries, Margaret Donovan, Susan
Kuzia, Teri Sweatman, and Dorothy
Cloherty.
MWC Board members Jean Boundy, Jeanne
Dennis, and Sigrid Howell and those involved
in Women’s Club activities spoke about the great
activities that are available, for example, Book
Clubs, Bridge, Memoirs, Couples and Solo
Dining, and Knitting. Jeanne Dennis told about
the upcoming programs planned for monthly
luncheons, and Jean Trexler spoke about her
mission to send dresses and t-shirts to Uganda
and how MWC is helping.

An important part of our charitable mission is the 50/50 raffle that we hold at each monthly luncheon.
The recipient of the 50/50 raffle is a Cape Cod charity suggested by our members. Any member can
submit a suggestion for a charity to be included in the basket from which the name of the winning
charity is pulled. If you have a charity you would like to suggest, please complete the following form and
bring it to the next meeting or email the information to Jocelyn Bradburn (her contact information is in
the directory).

The Mashpee Food Pantry is very
appreciative of all the support that
MWC has provided in the past.
As a reminder, the Food Pantry
has let us know that cash
donations are preferable to
donated products because the
Food Pantry is able to purchase in bulk at a
cheaper cost than we can individually. But they
will gratefully accept all product dontations if you
would still prefer to donate them.

This year we have started a new "Canasta
Group". We will meet the fourth
Monday of each month. So far, we
have eleven members in the group,
and we welcome anyone that would
like to join to play or be a sub. No

Luncheon which will be held at
the Sunset Grille in Bourne on
Wednesday, December 9 from 10:00 am to 2:00
pm. We are pleased that Patry Francis will be
with us to discuss her novel, "The Orphans of
Race Point." The discussion will be followed by
a buffet luncheon and our usual, much
anticipated Book Swap. The price of the
luncheon is $28.50. Reservations can be made
in the fall with your book group leader; make your
checks payable to the Mashpee Women's Club
and give to your group leader.

The new Flower/Centerpiece Committee has
been a great success this year!
We have had a great response to
the
Flower/Centerpiece Committee. Members are
having fun and enjoy being
creative
doing
the
arrangements
for
the
monthly luncheons. Many
have used flowers from
their own gardens, candles, lanterns, pumpkins,
berries and they are lovely! This is a great way
to get a little more involved in the MWC and have
some fun. The commitment is only once or twice
a year. If you have any questions please contact
Laura Kuzia or Janet Molloy (their contact

Couples Dining was a great success this year
and is winding down for the
year. There were 16 couples
this year with four couples in
each group, and everyone had
lots of fun and made some
great new friends. Janet Molloy and Laura
Kuzia are retiring this year from Couples Dining
as Committee Chairs.
MWC is looking for a couple of volunteers to
be the Committee Chairs for the 2016 year.
This is a great way for you and your spouse to
meet new people and make new friends. If
anyone has any questions or wants more
information about Couples Dining, please
contact Janet Molloy or Laura Kuzia. Their

You don’t need to be a couple to
enjoy good company and good food!
The Solo Dining group is very active
with over 20 members. We have
visited a variety of great restaurants
on the Cape in the past, and plan to continue that
tradition in the future! In October we are going
to Tugboats in Yarmouth on the water at the
Hyannis Marina. On November 5, we’ll be going
to The Belfry in Sandwich. If you are interested
in participating, please let me know. My contact
information is in the directory.

A number of Mashpee Women’s Club’s activities meet at the Mashpee Senior Center, and we are grateful
to have such a wonderful facility available for our use. If you are interested in supporting the Senior
Center, there are many volunteer opportunities available, including activities such as volunteer drivers,
friendly visitors to homebound seniors, and newsletter processing and many more. Plus if you have a
passion that you would like to share with others, there may be an opportunity for you to lead an activity

Just who are we? The
Mashpee
Women’s
Club is a significant
part of the Town of
Mashpee participating
in community events
such as:
 The Town of Mashpee’s “Oktoberfest”
 The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce
Christmas Parade
 Membership in the Mashpee Chamber of
Commerce
 Participation in the Mashpee High School
Senior’s Spring program: Preparing for
Life
And globally this year, we sewed dresses and
shorts as well as collected t-shirts for children in
a Uganda orphanage.
Throughout our sixteen-year history, we have
donated nearly $200,000 to projects within our
community. A sampling of these include:
 $50,000 to complete the restoration of
the Mashpee One Room Schoolhouse in
concert with Mashpee businesses.
 $10,000 to sponsor the lounge in the
Mashpee Senior Center.
 $10,000 toward the capital campaign for
the Community Health Center of Cape
Cod in Mashpee.

 $10,250 to purchase equipment for
CHCCC in Mashpee for prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of cervical
cancer.
 $10,000 toward the purchase of a
mammography unit at CHCCC in
Mashpee to equip the new expansion for
Women’s Health Center.
 $2,500 to the Community Builders of
Mashpee Village, a youth empowerment
initiative.
 $5,000 to the Cape Cod Collaborative
Arts Network to support music/arts
programs for local individuals who suffer
brain injuries.
 $2,500 scholarship to a 12th grade
college-bound
Mashpee
resident
selected annually by our Board of
Directors.
Through our 50/50 raffles, we have also been
able to support many Cape Cod charities and
organizations such as The Citizens Police
Academy, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Silent
Spring Institute, Homeless not Hopeless, Cape
Cod Military Support Foundation Inc., Cape Cod
Times Needy Fund, a Ugandan orphanage
project for postage to mail clothing, WE CAN,
and many others.

enthusiastically to our efforts.
