Seminar Organizing Committee
Concept note of the Seminar
The North Eastern States have been integral part of
Indian sub-continent since time immemorial. The North
Indian structures of polity, society and economy were
introduced in North East India in general and in Assam
in particular. A lot of researches have already been done
and many new facts have already been unearthed but
still many facts have to be explored. There is enough
scope for research on economy of Northeastern States
throughout the ages. Northeastern States had been ruled
by many known and unknown petty chieftains in
different ages but their history is still to be explored.
Socio-religious life of North Eastern States resembles
almost with rest of India. Tribal people of this region
had been non-Aryan origin but after Narakasura, Aryan
elements entered this region and many tribes embraced
Hinduism. Slowly Saktism, Saivism, Brahmanism,
Vaisnavism and even Buddhism grew rapidly. So, the
growth and development of all these religious beliefs
and the literatures relating to these beliefs should be
brought into light. Neo Vaisnavite religion initiated by
Sankardev, took the shape of religious movement during
the medieval and modern periods and many literary
works were composed. North Eastern people
contributed a lot towards the Freedom Struggle of India.
So, this seminar will try to bring into light the new facts
relating to polity, society and economy as well as
religion, education and literatures of North East India.
