Partsch announced Monday
evening the starting dates of the
new city administrator and city
clerk-treasurer.
Partsch said the "target date"
for new city clerk-treasurer Mark
Marcotte of Nebraska City will
be Tuesday. Former Otoe County
Treasurer Jackie Smith, who has
served as the new interim city
clerk-treasurer since March 5,
will assist Marcotte during the
first week of his position and
during his first Nebraska City
City Council meeting June 1.
Smith took over as the interim
clerk-treasurer after former City
terms and conditions of employment to ensure that "everyone's
on the same page going into the
employment agreement.
"There's a lot of codes, state
statutes, different things that apply to these positions that we've
relied on in the past to define
the relationship, and so the employment agreement takes those
codes and statutes, combines
them and puts them in one place
as well as any other special terms
and conditions," Partsch said.

Jim Stark had a few questions
for Partsch regarding the agreements.

It would improve communication and it would help both of
those parties to understand where
they are with their job performance," said Stark.

OPPD warns of utility scam calls
The Omaha Public Power
District is warning its customers
to be aware of scammers trying
to lure them into paying a bill
they don’t owe, as the utility
has seen a large spike in these
calls in recent days.
In the past four days alone,
OPPD has fielded 110 calls in
which customers reported receiving calls from scammers.
In April, OPPD had 54 such
calls, with 23 in March.
Customers with any questions
about making a payment, or
on their account in general,
should always call OPPD directly. As always, any customer
service inquiries may be addressed with the local rural of-
fices during business hours, as
well. After hours, or outside of
Omaha, customers may also
call 1-877-536-4131.
In these last calls, the scammers are asking customers to
come to different locations to
pay their bill. A few such calls
asked the customers to go to
an address that happened to
be an OPPD office. There
haven’t been any reports of customers going to any of these
locations, as requested, however
that is a new twist.
The scammers also are giving
the customer a number to call
back.
When the customer calls the
number back, they are getting

a voice messaging that purports
to be OPPD. It is not.
Some of those targeted have
indicated callers began the conversation with a disclaimer
of sorts that the call may be
monitored or recorded for training purposes or for quality assurance. Attempting to sound
more authentic, the scammers
have even suggested to skeptical
customers that they may contact
their local OPPD office.
Unfortunately, this over-thephone ploy has been targeting
utility customers across the region and the nation for years.
Most of the recent reports have
come from businesses within
OPPD service territory.
The boys of summer will showcase
their talents at Arbor Lodge this
weekend with a display of old fashioned baseball.
The Lincoln Olympics Vintage
Base Ball Club, the Topeka Westerns,
and the Colorado Territory All Stars
from Denver will gather at Arbor
Lodge on Saturday, May 23, and
Sunday, May 24, for a vintage baseball tournament. Games both days
will start at 11 a.m.
“We have hosted vintage baseball
in the past during Living History,”
said Laura Steinman, Arbor Lodge
Coordinator with Arbor Day Farm,
“but this is the first time we’ve had
a tournament with three teams from
throughout the Midwest.”
Dave Leopardi is the founder and
captain of the Lincoln Olympics.
Leopardi, who plays centerfield for
the team, played for several different
clubs while growing up in Massachusetts.
“My dad founded the Melrose
(Massachusetts) Pondfielders in
2009 and it’s been the highlight of
my summers,” Leopardi said. “When
I came to Nebraska and found that
vintage baseball wasn’t as prominent
here as it was back home, I started
my own club.”
Leopardi named his team after
the Olympic Club of Lincoln, which
played two years in Lincoln from
1869-1870.
“This is baseball as it was meant
to be played,” Leopardi said. “No
steroids, no Little League parents,
no overpriced tickets, no swearing,
no spitting, no sliding…we use the
rules, customs, and equipment of
the 19th century, which includes
period-accurate uniforms, soft bases,
lemon-peel balls, and, most notably,
no gloves.”
Leopardi said the teams are made
up of players all ages, sizes, skill
levels, and backgrounds.
“Despite all the differences, it’s
still baseball, with three strikes,
three outs, and nine innings,” he
said. “Everyone involved is beyond
excited for this event. I hope to
play several times a year at Arbor
Lodge.”

NCPD officers arrest same
woman twice within hours

Police officers arrested
a 25-year-old Nebraska
City woman twice after
responding to her residence twice for disturbances.
Nebraska City Police
Department officers were
dispatched to an apartment complex May 11 at
10:33 p.m. for a report
of a disturbance and a
reckless driver.
Sara B. Van of Nebraska City was first arrested
that evening on suspicion
of willful reckless driving,
a Class 3 misdemeanor;
leaving the scene, first
offense, a Class 2 misdemeanor; and disturbing
the peace, a Class 3 misdemeanor.
When officers first arrived at the apartment
complex they spoke to a
man who claimed that
Van had been intoxicated
and he tried to prevent
Van from driving her
pickup truck. According
to an affidavit, Van drove
up onto the sidewalk and
hit a light pole causing it
to break at the base and
fall down. The man told
officers that Van had almost hit him with the
truck and the pole almost
hit him as well.
The man also told officers that he had heard
Van having an argument
with someone in her
apartment previously.
Before officers had arrived, Van had drove her
truck away from the
apartment, had parked
it nearby and walked
back into her apartment.
Officers approached
Van's vehicle nearby.
"It was noted the damage to the truck was consistent with hitting the
pole," the affidavit stated.
"And a piece of the factory rock guard/mud flap
was recovered laying on
the pole that matched to
the missing one on the
truck."
Van was arrested at
11:05 p.m. and booked
into the Otoe County Jail.
According to an affidavit, Van was placed
into a holding cell for being "uncooperative" while
being booked into the
jail. Van posted bond and
was released. Before leaving the jail, Van was instructed to have no contact with "the witness in
the case she had just been
arrested for."
NCPD officers had later returned back to the
apartment complex on
May 12 at 2:25 a.m. for
another report of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers
heard yelling inside of
Van's apartment.
The witness from the
earlier incident had told
officers that Van had
threatened him.
Officers talked to Van
in her apartment and informed her that she was
not to have contact with
the witness due to the
possibility of tampering.
Van denied making the
threats.
According to an affidavit, officers informed
Van that she was under
arrest and she began to
use her feet to push officers away and pulled
away from officers while
being arrested.
Van was arrested on
suspicion of terroristic
threats, a Class 4 felony;
tampering with a witness
or informant, a Class 4
felony; and resisting arrest, first offense, a Class
1 misdemeanor, and was
booked into the Otoe
County Jail.
Van's first court appearance was May 15 in
the Otoe County Courtroom.
Van could be facing a
maximum of three
months in prison or a
$500 fine or both for her
Class 3 misdemeanor
charges; and a maximum
six months in prison or
a $1,000 fine or both for
her Class 2 misdemeanor
charge from the May 11
incident. Her bond was
set at $1,500.
Van could also be facing a maximum of five
years in prison, a $10,000
fine or both for the Class
4 felonies; and a maximum of not more than
one year in prison, a
$10,000 fine or both for
the Class 1 misdemeanor
from the May 12 incident.
Her bond was set at
$5,000.
Her preliminary hearing has been scheduled
for June 8 at 1:30 p.m.

Deborah K. Bausch, 56, of Nebraska City
was backing up her white 2010 Chevy
Malibu out of a driveway and hit a parked
red 2003 Mazda 6 vehicle, belonging to
Lorena Nickole Flores of Nebraska City.
The estimated damage to Bausch's vehicle was about $500. The estimated damage to Flores' vehicle was about $1,000.
Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected
to be factors involved in the vehicle collision.

An Otoe County Sheriff's Department deputy
arrested a 33-year-old
Nebraska City man during a traffic stop May 14
at 3:50 p.m.
Aaron C. Smallfoot was
arrested on suspicion of
driving under suspension,
a 15-year revocation, first
offense, a Class 4 felony.
A OCSD deputy was
driving north on 7th
Street from 1st Avenue
when he saw Smallfoot
driving a black Dodge
pickup truck west on
Central Avenue.
According to an affidavit, the deputy saw a
4-year-old child "standing in the back seat with
the passenger side win-
dow down and hanging
out the window from the
waist up."
The deputy caught up
with Smallfoot, who had
turned south on 11th
Street. The deputy pulled
over Smallfoot on 1st Corso. Smallfoot told the
deputy that he had left
his driver's license at
home.
During the traffic stop,
the deputy noticed a 9month-old in an unrestrained car seat behind
the driver's seat. The
deputy was then advised
by dispatch that Smallfoot's driver's status had
expired and was suspended.
"Dispatch further advised that (Smallfoot's)
license was suspended
for a period of 15 years

his grey 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix fourdoor vehicle in the alley south of 13th

roadway to head north. Trey Borrego entered the roadway to head south and hit
the passenger side of Eyman's vehicle.
The estimated damage to the 1995 Chevy
Cavalier was about $500. The estimated
damage to Eyman's vehicle was about
$1,800. Neither drugs nor alcohol were
suspected to be factors involved in the
crash.

Leopardi said one way to ensure vintage baseball continues at Arbor Lodge is to

active clubs,” Leopardi said. “It’s such a fantastic alternative or addition to slowpitch softball or men’s league, plus a Living History experience for history buffs or
even just a way to get out and play ball in a competitive, but gentlemanly environment.”
“We think it’s great that we can have something like this on Memorial Day
weekend,” Steinman said. “It’s a fun thing to watch and we encourage all baseball
lovers and members of the community to come out and watch.”

Darin J. Gress, age 43 of
Hebron, formerly Nebraska City, passed away on
Friday evening; May 15,
2015 at the Nebraska
Heart Institute.
Darin Joy Gress was
born on May 20, 1971 at St.
Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City; the son of
Fredrick Michael and Janis
Joy (Reese) Gress.
He attended school and
graduated from the Nebraska City High School
with the class of 1989. He
then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
where he earned his degree
in Wildlife Management;
graduating in May of 1994.
After graduating from
U.N.L., Darin worked for
DeBruce Grain Company
and at NPPD Power Plant
at Brownville. In October
of 1999, he moved to Hebron where he accepted
the job as Game Warden
for six counties in and
around the Hebron area.
He was an avid outdoorsman and was a member of Ducks Unlimited,
Pheasants Forever and the
Bowling League.
He received the 15 year
service award from both
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife

Mary C. Porter, age 88 of
Omaha, formerly Nebraska City, passed away on
Friday, May 15, 2015 at the
Bickford Cottage Assisted
Living in Omaha.
Mary was born on Dec.
27, 1926 in Lawrence,
Kan., to Mary (Ballmann)
and Bernard Kangieser.
She was the third of nine
children, with five sisters
and three brothers.
Her family moved to Nebraska City when she was
in junior high school. At
Nebraska City high school
she met and fell in love
with Morton Porter.
They married soon out
of high school and were together for the next seventy years.
Both possessed a great
sense of humor and Dad
could always make Mom
laugh. They also loved
music and jitter-bug dancing to the big-band sounds
of their era.
She loved to shop and
enjoyed being fashionable
with beautiful clothing and
endless pairs of shoes and
bags.
She was also a fabulous
cook and baker. No one
could make a more delicious apple pie than Apple
Mary, as she was fondly
called.

Center on Aug. 18, 1950.
To this union six children were born: Teresa,
Peggy, Jane, Maurice
William II, Mary, and Norma.
Rowena devoted her life
to her family and making a
home for them nothing
was more important to her.

Ralph E. Crowner, age
73 of Nebraska City passed
away on Thursday morning; April 30, 2015 at the
Golden Living Center in
Nebraska City.
Ralph Emmert Crowner
was born on December 3,
1941 at the former
Brown s Hospital in Nebraska City; the son of
Everett Paul and Lucille
Catherine (Sims) Crowner.
He was a truck driver for
numerous years until his
health began to fail and he
retired. Ralph enjoyed
watching old Westerns and
All Star Wrestling, working
on cars and simply visiting
with his family and friends.
He is survived by a
daughter Faye Crowner of
Nebraska City, son Calvin
Crowner of Nebraska City;
seven grand-children, six
great grandchildren; a sister Mary Jenkins and husband Tony of Nebr. City;
five nieces and nephews:
Shon Betts, Tessa Betts,
Erica Betts, Jason Betts
and Bruce Betts; 15 great
nieces and nephews; other
family and friends.
He was preceded in
death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life

FROM THE GOVERNOR
Crime bills could
impact safety
Over the past couple
weeks, the Legislature has
continued to advance proposals that soften our
state’s approach to dealing
with the most hardened
and heinous criminals.
These proposals, including the repeal of Nebraska’s death penalty and
mandatory minimum sentences for certain offenses,
would make it more difficult for Nebraska law enforcement to prosecute the
worst criminals and consequently would put Nebraska families and public
safety at risk.
Proponents of repealing
the death penalty like to
say that Nebraska does
not even have a death
penalty because our state
has not executed anyone
since 1997.
Whatever has happened
in the past, this is a management problem, and I
am committed to ensuring
that Nebraska has a functional death penalty.
Just last week, I announced that the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has purchased the drugs necessary to carry out the death
penalty here in our state.
Even without executions
in recent years, the death
penalty in Nebraska has
continued to play an important role in prosecuting
criminals, protecting our
families, and ensuring that
criminals remain locked
behind bars.
Some proponents of repealing the death penalty
have argued that the four
walls of a prison and a life
sentence instead of a death
sentence is enough to protect the public from our society’s most heinous criminals.
Here is an example that
demonstrates why this way
of thinking is wrong and
misguided.
In 1973, Laddie Dittrich
was originally convicted
of burglary and first degree
murder for his involvement in the stabbing death
of an Omaha man.
He received a life sentence.
In April 2013, Dittrich
was pardoned and his sentence was commuted from
life to 80 years to life. Subsequently, Dittrich was
paroled in May 2014.
In November 2014, Dittrich was arrested for third
degree sexual assault on a
child involving a 10 year
girl.
A recent case in the
news also demonstrates
the important role the
death penalty plays in
prosecuting the most
heinous criminals.
Last week, Douglas
County prosecutors announced that they would
seek the death penalty
against Roberto MartinezMarinero who has been
charged with killing his
mother, drowning his 5year-old half-brother in a
river, and discarding an
11-month-old infant in a
dumpster.
These are heinous
crimes, and these criminals should receive a commensurate sentence.
If the Legislature gives
final approval to repealing
the death penalty, senators will open the
door quite literally to
more lenient sentences for
death row inmates.
This legislation not only
repeals the death penalty

for sentencing in future
cases, but would also repeal the death sentences
for the 11 inmates who
currently sit on death row.
Let me be clear: Advocates of LB268 are not
only supporting the repeal
of the death penalty in the
future, but they are also
voting to give lighter sentences to Nebraska’s most
heinous murderers. Senators also amended the legislation so that current
death row inmates would
be given a life sentence
instead of life without
parole.
This leaves open the possibility that our state’s most
heinous murderers could
be out on the streets once
again.
Another concerning
piece of legislation is
LB173 which would repeal
mandatory minimum sentences for certain offenses
and remove protections
against revolving door
criminals.
In the past couple of
weeks, the Legislature has
tinkered with LB173 to
make some changes, however, they have failed to address the concerns of top
law enforcement about
this bill.
In its current form, this
legislation would still repeal mandatory minimums for crimes such as
production of child
pornography, drive by
shootings, and the use of a
firearm to commit a felony.
LB173 would also prevent law enforcement from
using the three strikes
option for habitual criminals including those convicted for arson in the second degree, gang recruitment, and possession of a
firearm at a school.
Overwhelmingly, Nebraskans I talk to across
our state are deeply concerned about the repeal of
the death penalty and attempts by the Legislature
to give more lenient sentences to hardened criminals.
Events like the disturbance at Tecumseh
demonstrate that we need
to continue to maintain
strong facilities and tough
laws to protect Nebraskans.
I am committed to
standing up for the public
safety of Nebraskans. It is
the number one objective
of government and I take
it seriously.

DIGGING UP ROOTS
Homesteaders murdered
Editor’s Note: This is
part two of a series about
Otoe Indians.
The 4th of July Celebration at Mattingly’s Mill
near Fairbury found the
Otoe Indians joining in,
especially enjoying that
new steam whistle, but
after awhile most of them,
anxious to get home from
their buffalo hunt, headed
on out toward the reservation. Neescaw, however,
lingered. There was another attraction for him.
A fellow named John
Wehn had been selling
liquor without a license in
Fairbury for several
months and although
there had been several
complaints filed with the
law, nothing had been
done about it. The celebration offered a great opportunity for him to make
extra money and he had
sold his whiskey to several of the Indians from the
reservation, Neescaw included.
As the day wore on,
Neescaw was in a drunken state and started making threats against sever-

al white men who were
there. He caused enough
of a ruckus that several attendees remembered him.
When he finally started
for Medicine Hat’s camp
he was in a pretty sorry
state.
Meanwhile, two homesteaders had set up camp
about four miles from the
small village of Rock
Creek where there was
plenty of water and grass
for their horses. They had
met on the trail and decided to make camp together.
One man was S. N. Pasco, about fifty years old.
He had taken a claim in
Republican
County,
Kansas and was traveling
to Nemaha County to visit relatives. The other fellow, P.H. Walters, lived
near Nebraska City, but
had been to his claim near
White Rock, Kansas, and
was returning home with
a load of corn.
The men had set up
camp and were cutting
grass for the horses when
two pistol shots rang out.
Pasco dropped immediately with a bullet in his
brain. Walters tried to
defend himself with the
scythe he had been using, but he also took two
shots, one through his left
eye and the other entering
his brain behind his left
ear. Both men had powder
burns, indicating they had
been shot at a very close
range.
The next morning a
young man named Lewis
Wagner was walking the
trail when he spotted the
horses. Hoping to catch a
ride into Beatrice, he approached the camp. At
first he thought the men
were sleeping, but soon realized both were dead. He
immediately hurried back
up the trail to the nearest
homestead, that of Mr.
E.D. Brickley, to report
what he had found. Brickley went to the camp to
verify Wagner’s story and
then hurried back to Fairbury to report the murders.
Sheriff S. J. Alexander
went to the camp and
looked for clues to the
person who could conceive of such a crime. No
motive was evident. They
had not been robbed. Pasco’s pocketbook still contained the ten cents that
his wife had said was what
he had left home with.
The horses were still in
place and in harness. Neither man had any known
enemies.
The sheriff immediately offered a reward and
area newspapers were
quick to report the senseless crime, noting that
“some drunken Indians
from the Otoe reservation
were suspected.”
Now the aid of the Indian agent was needed.

how he offered assistance
in solving the murders.
DIARY OF A DAD
Rain extends screen time
Rain, rain, go away,
come again another day…
That’s how a familiar
nursery rhyme starts and
it’s been stuck in my head
for like a month now.
You can probably guess
why, it’s been raining for
what seems like forever.
I made a comment last
night to someone, “I
moved from Oregon a
couple of years ago. I didn’t realize I moved to Seattle.”
Rain is good, rain provides nourishment for the
crops, it helps the trees
and grass grow, and it
helps my garden for sure.
It also makes it difficult to
keep your kids occupied.
But rain really makes it
hard to keep my kids occupied.
There are all kinds of
studies that show that
putting your kid in front of
a screen (TV, phone,
tablet, video game, movie,
etc.) is a bad idea before
they are two.
Studies also say that you
should also limit their
screen time, as they get
older, about one hour a

under age 5.
My wife and I try to
take into account these
studies when trying to
raise our kids and helping
them find things to do, but
when it rains it gets difficult.
We have a ton of toys
and books, most of them
our kids ignore, that is
until you try to put them
on the garage sale or give
them to Friends of Faith,
then it’s the only toy they
ever loved, but I digress…the truth is I love
my kids more than I imag-
ined I could love anyone
or anything in my life, but
sometimes I need a break
from them and sometimes
they need a break from
me.
When it’s not raining
they might be running
around outside with the
neighborhood kids and I
can sit there just making
sure nothing gets broken
or no one is playing in
the street, that’s a lot of
fun for them and me.
When it is raining, they
are stuck inside playing
with each other, which as
anyone with multiple kids
will tell you it’s a limited
time before there’s a meltdown.
Sometimes they will
play quietly in their rooms
by themselves, but mostly they are all up in my
business, crawling all over
me, both of them vying for
attention.
A lot of the time, it’s
just easier, on my psyche,
to give them my iPad and
have them watch Netfilx
until we have to eat dinner. Even if you play board
games, or house, or roll a
ball, or read them books,
even if you do all of those
things that takes up a hour
at best. Now what?

Pioneer golfers compete
at district tournament
The Nebraska City boys’
golf team competed at the
District B1 tournament at
Woodland Hills Country
Club on Monday against
11 other teams for the opportunity to compete at
the state tournament in
Grand Island later this
month.
The Pioneers finished
eighth in the tournament
with a team score of 423.
Beatrice won the tournament with a team score
of 324, and the Orange
also had the top individual
golfer in the tournament,
Tyler Wagner, who shot
71 and qualified for the
state tournament.
“We had a mixed bag of
results,” said head coach
Scott Kinnison. “We didn't
qualify for state or have
any individuals qualify,
but we improved our placing from last year. “
“I knew going in that a
top 3 finish was going to
be a difficult task,” Kinnison continued, “but I
was happy with our per-
formance. We finished
eighth and had we had a
little better day from a
couple of guys, we may
have climbed to fifth or
fourth. “
Kinnison said the Pioneers improved their team
score from two weeks ago
on the same course, and
the course and conditions
were much more difficult
on Monday, when temperatures were about 55
degrees and the wind was
a factor.
“Individually, Kyle Francois led us with a 102,”
said Kinnison. “He got off
to a less-than-ideal start
by hitting one out-ofbounds, but rebounded
nicely and finished with a
birdie on the 18th.”
Kinnison added that Aston Crum, who didn't play
the course two weeks ago,
started off really well. “After nine holes, he was inside the top 10, but he
struggled on his back nine
and posted 103,” he added.
Loren Steinman also
had a less than perfect
start as he lost a ball on
the first hole, said Kinni-
son. Steinman played
much better on his back
nine and finished with a
107.
“Tom Gress had a rollercoaster round,” said Kinnison. “He had some very
good holes and then had
some holes where he had
big numbers. I know that
he was in a difficult situation emotionally with
graduation and the death
of his uncle over the weekend and for him to come
out and compete was
something I admired,” he
said.
Ben Miller finished with
a 118. “Ben's round followed the same pattern
as Tom's,” said Kinnison.
“He had a some really
good holes and some holes
where he struggled.”
“Overall, I thought this
team was much improved
over last year,” said Kinnison. “We will miss all
the seniors, not just the
three that played varsity.
As I look to the future,
we have some younger
guys who will need to really work hard to help us
make the next step.”
Eight members of the
Nebraska Cornhuskers
baseball team were honored by the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday
morning, including Tanner Lubach, Chance Sinclair and Ryan Boldt,
who were each tabbed
as second-team All-Big
Ten performers by the
league’s coaches.
Josh Roeder earned
third-team honors, while
Scott Schreiber, Luis Alvarado and Garett King
were all named to the AllBig Ten Freshman Team.
Senior Blake Headley was
Nebraska’s representative
on the Sportsmanship
Team.
After earning all-freshman honors last season,
Boldt was one of three
outfielders tabbed on the
second team.
Entering the Big Ten
Tournament, Boldt leads
the Huskers in average
(.350), hits (75) and runs
(45). Boldt’s 75 hits are
tied for third in the league
with
Michigan’s Carmen
Benedetti. Boldt also ranks
seventh in the league in
batting average and is 10th
in runs scored.

Wedding showers gone wrong
DEAR AMY: I was invited to
a bridal shower. The invitation
stated that the couple (who have
been living together) have everything they need, so this was a
“personal” shower for the bride.
We were told names of stores
where the bride likes to shop
to get gift cards for her — these
are clothing stores! I’ve heard
of some couples asking for
donations for their honeymoon (which I think is even
worse), but I found this pretty
presumptuous.
Should guests really be asked
to buy gift cards so the bride
can have a new wardrobe? Am I
being unreasonable for questioning why they are even having this
shower? — Perplexed
DEAR PERPLEXED: This seems
to be an offshoot of the “trousseau” or “lingerie” shower, where
a bride would be given gifts to
build her honeymoon wardrobe.
But yes, giving J.Crew gift
cards to a bride so she can buy
cute shoes for work does not
seem in the spirit of the shower

asked if the council could
be involved with the evaluation process for both
positions. Mayor Bryan
Bequette said he's a "huge"
supporter of the council's
input during the city clerktreasurer and administrator evaluations.
The city clerk-treasurer
and administrator evaluations and reappointments
take place every December
every "even-numbered"
year. Partsch said if its decided to not reappoint
Marcotte or Path at that
time then the agreements
will not be extended.
"Then pursuant to the
law they would continue
to serve until their successor is appointed,"
Partsch said.
The passages for resolutions 2665-15 and 266615 for the city clerk-treasurer and city administrator employment agreements was approved by
the commission.
In other news, the council also approved of Resolution 2667-15 authorizing
the Nebraska City Recreation Agency to issue its
sales tax revenue bonds,
series 2015, to not exceed
an aggregate principal
amount of $5 million and
to pay the bonds using a
portion of the city's sales
and use tax to pay the
principal amount and interest of the bonds. This
will help finance the cost
and construction of the
new aquatic center.

the corner of county roads
54th and G, north 1 mile
and then continuing west
to 50th and F roads. Currently there's one customer
on the existing route. The
new route will include
more landowners wanting
to receive natural gas service.
■ BPW natural gas
work No. 282 for a total
cost of $60,153.16: The
cost includes the purchase
of a Natco Cameron Natural Gas Boarder Station
indirect tank heater for
$36,191, plus shipping,
sales tax, and installation
labor, equipment and materials. The tank heater
will replace the heater at
the 50-year-old Border
Station No. 3. The heater
will provide indirect heat
of natural gas at the border
station to prevent moisture from building up in
the natural gas distribution system.
■ BPW natural gas work
order No. 284 for about
$90,875.60: This project
will allow for the installation of a 19,000-foot, 3inch natural gas main extension from the corner
of county roads 54th and
F, north on 54th road to
E, then east on E and 55th
roads to C road just east
to 5569 C Rd. to feed a
grain dryer and residences
along the path.
■ BPW electric work
order No. 162 for
$71,749.69: For the underground installation of
primary conductor in the
duct from the Central Avenue Substation to
Steamwagon Road to allow for a second feed to
the West Central Avenue
Substation.
■ BPW's request to purchase upgrades to the
Electrical SCADA System
for $152,500: This project
will provide upgrade to
the original SCADA system and hardware at various power plants and substations and control devices within the Nebraska
City Utilities' Electrical
Distribution System. The
upgrade will also allow for
better reporting, functionality and expandability for
future devices and control.
The council also appointed Dr. Dean Thomson and Neal Deremer to
serve of the Nebraska City
Airport Authority Board.
The council will meet
again at 6 p.m. on June 1
at City Hall. The public is
welcome to attend.

Memorial Day events:
The American Legion
needs volunteers to place
flags on veterans’ graves
at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Volunteers
should meet at the cemetery at 3 p.m. Friday to
place the flags.
Volunteers need to return to the cemetery at 3
p.m. Tuesday to remove
the flags.
The Legion also needs
help in putting flags
around the Otoe County
Courthouse on Monday.
Flags will be placed
around the courthouse at
6 a.m. and removed at 4
p.m.
St. Mary’s Catholic
Church will celebrate a
Memorial Day Mass at 8
a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s
Cemetery in Nebraska City
to honor deceased service
members and veterans.
In the event of rain, the
mass will be celebrated in
the church sanctuary. St.
Mary’s Cemetery is lined
with flags for Memorial
Day.
A Memorial Day Mass

Civil War Veterans Museum at the GAR Memorial Hall, 910 First Corso.

Swim practice begins Tuesday

A staple of summer activity in Nebraska City is
swimming. For decades,
the Nebraska City Swim
Team has provided a safe
and educational outlet for
Nebraska City youth who
like to swim. This summer
is no different.
“In my mind, swimming
at this level is about fun,”
said Nebraska City Swim
Team coach Nancy Giles.
“The competition is good,
the conditioning is great,
but enjoying the water is
most important.”
Giles said practices for
the team start Tuesday,
May 26, at Steinhart Pool.
The team will hold two
practices a day for six
weeks, dividing up the
practices times between
age groups. During that
six weeks, the team will
compete in nine duals and
triangulars, seven of them
at Steinhart Pool. Swimmers will also compete in
regional invitationals at
area pools, including in
Auburn, Plattsmouth, and
Maryville, Missouri.
The season ends on July
11 with the Nebraska City
Invitational held at Steinhart Pool. Nearly a dozen
regional teams come to
Nebraska City to compete
in the all-day event.
The Nebraska City
Swim Team is open all
any Nebraska City youth
ages 5 through 18. The
swimmers learn proper
technique for the backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly, and freestyle. The
meets showcase individual
races and relays.
“As a kid, I enjoyed
swim team because it was
the chance to be with
friends who weren’t part
of my school,” remembers
Jenny Kearney. Kearney
swam for more than ten
years on the Nebraska City
Swim Team before swimming competitively at the
University of Nebraska at
Kearney. She now has
two sons on the swim
team. “As a parent, I enjoy
seeing the older kids cheer
on and be role models to
the younger kids.”
Kearney also said she
appreciates the life lessons
that swimming teaches.
“The swim coaches give
the kids personal best ribbons when they improve
their time at a meet, so
even if they don’t win, they
know they are getting better,” Kearney said.
Giles said she believes
swimming to be one of
the best sports in which
kids can become involved.
“It’s about making
swimmers for life,” she
said. “They can start at
this age and swim for the
rest of their lives.”
Home meets are scheduled for June 1, June 8,
June 10, June 15, June 17,
June 24, and July 1. The
meets start at 6 p.m. at
Steinhart Pool. They are
