National
Symposium
on Knee
Osteoarthritis
PROGRAM
Dear Colleagues,
It is our pleasure to invite you to this symposium aiming to gather together clinicians
and scientists working on knee osteoarthritis
(OA) from all over Switzerland. Knee OA is a
complex disease involving several pathways
and therapies. This observation is the basis
for the symposium program which highlights
different aspects of the disease and research
done throughout the country.
The scientific presentations will end with
the lecture of PD. Gian Salzmann from the
Schulthess Clinic. This last presentation will
be built around the soccer player population,
highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of
knee OA. Furthermore, discussing the risk for
knee OA for one of the most popular sports in
Switzerland should provide extra motivation
for further research.
The scientific presentations will start with a
lecture by Prof. Thomas P. Andriacchi from
Stanford University. Prof. Thomas P. Andriacchi is a world leader in multidisciplinary
study of knee OA. His lecture about a systems
approach will therefore provide an excellent
foundation to link the various aspects of the
disease presented during this symposium.
Finally, a general discussion will conclude the
symposium. This round table will provide an
opportunity to summarize the presentations
and discuss about next steps.
The talks on pathomechanism and treatments will provide a broad coverage of competencies in Switzerland. During this first
national symposium on knee OA it will be
impossible to give the podium to all OA researchers in Switzerland. For this reason,
the symposium includes a poster session
and every participant is encouraged to present his work during the extended coffee
break. Posters are invited to present either
a specific study or more generally the field
of activity of a research group. PhD students
as well as senior researchers are welcome to
bring a poster and share their research with
other Swiss teams.
