Welcome from Your Host
Welcome to the 2015 Student
Funded Fellowships Auction!
The Student Funded Fellowships
Auction is an annual highlight
on the Michigan Law School
calendar, and we are thrilled to
welcome you to tonight’s event.
Each spring, the SFF Auction
brings together students, faculty,
alumni, and staff for one exciting
night of fundraising. Last year’s
Auction featured items like
vacation homes in Florida and
the Berkshires and opportunities
to go skydiving, shooting, curling,
whirlyballing, and bowling with
some of the law school’s favorite
professors. And who could forget
the chance to ride in style to a
Miley Cyrus concert with Deans
West and Zearfoss? The 2014
Auction raised nearly $50,000 in
one night, including a generous
matching gift from the WeinHirshon Charitable Foundation,
and we hope tonight will be the
best Auction yet.
The Auction is just one night,
but SFF works 365 days of the
year to support the public interest
community. Donate a Day’s Pay
(DADP), which has set national
fundraising records for programs
of its kind, asks students to
donate one day’s worth of their
summer law firm salary to SFF.
The program is a terrific way for
SFF grant recipients to give back
to SFF as their law school career
progresses. Our Law School
Travel
and
Reimbursement
(L-STAR)
program
allows
students who are traveling for job
interviews—and the law firms who
are interviewing them—to support
the public interest community.
We are grateful to the students,
alumni, faculty, local businesses,
and law firms who support us
through donations each and every
year.
The SFF Auction would not
be possible without the help and
support of many members of the
law school student body, faculty,
staff, and administration—thank
you for your constant support for
and commitment to SFF’s cause.
Thank you, also, to Professor
Hirshon and the Wein-Hirshon
Charitable foundation for the
generous matching program in
tonight’s Auction.
Once again, welcome to the
2015 SFF Auction. We’re looking
forward to an absolutely fantastic
event. Have fun! And remember:
bid high and bid often!
With love,
1

Letter from the Dean
to jump out of a plane while
strapped to Professor Reimann
(I remain amazed year after year
that anyone wants to do either
of those things). Watch for the
occasional spontaneous dance.
And, as always, Niehoff. Just
Niehoff. You’ll see.
Nowhere is our collegiality
more on display than at the SFF
Auction. Among the humor, the
cheers, and the impressive lack
of taking ourselves too seriously
lies an erstwhile commitment to
helping each other succeed.
Enjoy the evening, and thank
you so much for your support.
Welcome to the 36th Student
Funded Fellowships Auction!
Led by students, SFF provides
necessary financial support to
first-year students undertaking
summer internships in the public
interest. Since its inception,
SFF has raised more than
$2.5 million. It is a wonderful
illustration of Michigan Law’s
longstanding reputation for
commitment to public service.
That’s why we’re here, of
course. But that’s only part of
what makes tonight special.
You are about to experience an
evening that uniquely highlights
our Michigan community. Tonight
is a night full of hidden talents,
genuine laughs, competitive
spirit, and, occasionally,
ridiculousness.
I am one of the people
who particularly enjoys the
ridiculousness. Be on the
lookout, for instance, for your
chance to win the opportunity
Regards,
Dean Mark D. West
