MELBOURNE METRO RAIL INFORMATION FOR THE YARRA RIVER PRECINCT This fact sheet has been prepared to provide sporting clubs, businesses and traders along the Yarra River with information about the Melbourne Metro Rail Project. About the Melbourne Metro Rail Project The project will connect the Sunbury and Cranbourne / Pakenham lines for the first time, creating a new end-to-end train line running via Swanston Street in the CBD. The Melbourne Metro Rail Project will expand the City Loop, enabling major improvements in capacity, reliability and efficiency of train lines serving Melbourne’s growth areas in the north, west and south-east. It will bring more people into the city, make central Melbourne a more attractive option for businesses, and further position Melbourne as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Melbourne Metro involves construction of two nine-kilometre rail tunnels from South Kensington in the west to South Yarra in the east and five new underground stations. Tunnelling under the Yarra River The new Melbourne Metro tunnels will travel underneath the Yarra River in the vicinity of St Kilda Road. The geological profile beneath the Yarra River means that there are a number of engineering challenges involved in constructing the new rail tunnels under the river. The Melbourne Metro Rail Authority (MMRA) is currently assessing options for crossing under the Yarra River. Factors that are being considered in determining the preferred construction methodology include: It is expected that there will be some construction activity in the Yarra River and surrounding gardens as the project is built. The long term impact of Melbourne Metro on the Yarra River precinct and the CBD is overwhelmingly positive. It will bring thousands of extra people to the heart of Melbourne, which is great for traders, business and visitors to our wonderful city. Working with local businesses and traders MMRA is investigating a range of measures to reduce disruption and keep the city moving during Melbourne Metro’s construction. • Environment and cultural heritage values MMRA is committed to working closely with sporting clubs, businesses and traders along and near the Yarra River to understand their needs and how these might inform the preferred construction methodology. • Rail operational requirements Next steps • Ground conditions Identifying the detailed alignment and depth for the rail tunnels requires more extensive investigations, including the geotechnical works currently being undertaken as part of the project’s ongoing planning and development. • Construction impact on surrounding communities and businesses • Traffic conditions and access. The location and depth of the tunnels in the project’s reference design will be determined as part of this process. The final construction methodology will be determined by the appointed contractor for these works. Project construction Geotechnical investigations are currently underway to gather data about ground conditions and soil quality to ensure that MMRA has the best, most up-to-date information available as planning for the city’s newest rail line continues. The detailed alignment, depth of tunnels and construction methodology can only be fully determined once geotechnical investigations and detailed planning work have been completed. MMRA will undertake a comprehensive consultation program with stakeholders, including Yarra River sporting clubs, businesses and traders, later this year. Major works are expected to commence on the Melbourne Metro Rail project by 2018.
