ASSESSMENT
You have achieved the following grade for this ELP
How your home learning will be assessed:
Your Extended Learning Project is a RESEARCH Task!
1. When you hand in your work, we will be checking that you have completed each
of the tasks.
2. You will then take a YacaPaca Quiz, in class, based on the contents of the
research you have carried out.
3. Your percentage score will then be recorded as your ELP Grade.

Dear Parents/ Carers,
Welcome to the Year 8 E.L.P for ICT and Computing.
This booklet contains a series of homework RESEARCH tasks which are based on Computing.
Your child’s teacher will provide support with the work and explain what should be done.
We are also expecting students to go away and think for themselves.
We value parental/ guardian support with the completion of this E.L.P. Some students will
need more support than others and we hope that this is not too onerous for you.
We do not expect you to spend hours on the project yourself. However it is important
that you get an insight in to the sort of work that we expect students to complete.
Your comments are valuable and I would ask you to complete the parental section on the
back page.
The E.L.P aims to foster the students’ independence, confidence, group work and life
long learning related to ICT and Computing.
Enjoy!

Task 1a: Hardware, Software and Storage
Hardware:
This is all the parts of a computer system you can physically touch.
You need to be able to identify the difference between Input and Output devices
Software:
This is all the programs that the computer runs. Computers use TWO kinds of software:
1. An Operating system: this is the software that controls the whole computer system e.g.
Windows, UNIX or MAC OS
2. Application software: this is things like Microsoft Office, Scratch and Games etc.
Storage Devices:
Any device which is used to store data is called a storage device. There are lots of different
types, each with their own purpose and use.
YOUR TASK
Complete the table below; identifying the categories the item falls into.

Task 2a: Computer Networks
A network is two or more computers connected together. Computers in a network can
communicate with each other.
We use a computer network at CWLC to allow us to share printers and files.
This is an example of a
network
Question 1: Explain the term Local Area Network (LAN)
Question 2: Explain the Wide Area Network (WAN)
6
Task 2b: Network Topologies
Star Networks:
 Used when a large number of workstations need to be connected to a central computer, such
as a main frame or server.
 Each workstation is connected directly to the central computer
Question 1: Draw and label a diagram for a Star Network
Line (Bus) Networks:
 Data is sent to and from the file server along a line of cable.
 All terminals are connected to this central line
Question 2: Draw and label a diagram for a Line Network
Ring Network:
A bit like a line network, except that all the equipment is linked in a ring.
Data flows around the network in only one direction
Question 3: Draw and label a diagram for a Ring Network
7
Task 2c: Advantages and Disadvantages of Network Topologies
Question 1: Complete the following table, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each
type of network.
